Just read this book by Brian Greene and although it's extremely academic I could still follow along.

It proposes just about theory out there so he's very open-minded which I appreciate. If anyone has read this and has a favorite theory, let me know. Mine is the 'holographic universe' mixed with a little 'multiverse' (probably because I've read all the Seth books and he proposes something like this).

The clarification of Mode 1 really helps since I can remember having more accurate but lower light/gray vision and then it transforms quickly into Mode 2 (brighter light, other beings, different furniture placement) so your explanation makes sense.

My first OOBEs would be problematic in that I'd get stuck in the house if I went up through the roof (I'd actually see layers of wood in extreme close-up as if I was stuck between the wall board and the siding or see the wood floor from an ant's perspective). In "Astral Dynamics" he had similar experiences at first so perhaps our brain creates this common symbolism.

So now I find it easier to 'travel' through windows and the only obstacles I have at times flying is interfering layers of telephone wires (which of course is representational of something else, some people think it's electromagnetic interference since this rarely happens when I'm sleeping in the country vs. the city).

What I find fascinating in reading this forum and books is the commonality of experience. I like that I'm skipping or speeding through various stages (and past barriers) and going more quickly to the 3D black world.

Thank you for your thoughts and yes, I agree, I'm not 'having to' conjure up a room in a WILD.

Interesting distinction between Mode 1 and 2 - think I've rarely had a Mode 1 since I almost always see something about the room that is not accurate.
129  Astral Projection & Out of Body Experiences / Welcome to Astral Projection Experiences! / Re: Afraid To Continue [Weird sensations during first try at Astral Projection] on: May 19, 2011, 17:32:59
Summerlander, I agree with your summary and have a question for you or for any others who would like to answer.

When having an OOBE I feel myself rising and see a my or a room before flying through my window to go to the 3D black world. When I have a wake induced lucid dream (WILD) I usually have the sensation of falling and feel myself being rushed to the 3D black world without the interim room stage. Since it sounds like you experience both, any thoughts on why this is?

130  Metaphysics / Welcome to Metaphysics! / Re: How can someone open their third eye at will (safely)? on: May 19, 2011, 17:15:34
Mine opened after a psychic friend told me I needed to become fearless about what I would see and sure enough, about a month later I started to see energy, auras, spirits, orbs, animal totems and have ever since (about 6 years). She also recommended placing an amethyst crystal at my third eye but props/tools are probably unnecessary.

I also asked the author/intuitive Caroline Myss about what I was seeing and she said I ALWAYS had the ability to see these things but that my spiritual development (meditating, lucid dreaming, law of attraction work) made it possible to register it consciously through becoming more conscious and fearless (obvious when you think of it that way).

If you meditate with your eyes closed and focus your vision at the third eye area it's amazing what you'll see if you really look. I usually see an outline of an eye (my third eye?) or a bearded man (my guide?) whenever I focus there.

Enjoy and don't try too hard, it'll just happen.
131  Astral Chat / Welcome to Astral Chat! / Re: How do you want to die? on: May 18, 2011, 19:36:11
A psychic friend of mine said I would live to a ripe old age and then have a joyous conscious death like the Buddhist monks who meditate their way out and choose not to bring their consciousness back to the body. I love that idea being the control freak that I am.

She also said when I experience an OOBE that it is a very similar feeling people have when they die. In reading "The Tibetan Book of the Dead" that seems to line up with what they believe so by us practicing OOBE while we are alive perhaps we're just getting good training for dealing with the afterlife. (A Tibetan monk once told me that the Buddhist lucid dream practice is what they consider the fastest track to enlightenment - a good book on this is "The Tibetan Yogas of Dream and Sleep").
132  Psychic and Paranormal / Welcome to Psychic and Paranormal! / Re: 3 AM to 4 AM on: May 18, 2011, 18:37:40
I wake up nearly every night at 2:22 (I figure it's the universe having fun with me that's it's almost always 1:11, 2:22 or 3:33) and I often see spirits that are not related to the dream I was just having. I've noticed a few people on this forum state/judge it's just a hallucination or coming entirely from your own consciousness and I used to think this too but after quite a few of these experiences, I do believe they are genuine manifestations of realms bleeding through to our waking one if your third eye is open to see them. Enjoy.

Hi Jilt, I couldn't help thinking that I was reading a computer game scenario as I read your description of your AP.
Have you played much computer games? I can see this in many peoples stories of AP experiences.
Cheers, djed

Djed, I don't play computer games (other than Scrabble) so all this animated computer game like imagery really feels outside of me - not something I'm conjuring. I got the impression that I wasn't meant to go where I was asking and these were little 'programs' keeping me out. Especially since I got the very same effect twice in a row. I had something similar happen once when I asked to visit an old boyfriend and I got an international symbol for a broken heart and a stop sign which meant he was off limits because I had broken his heart (understandable in retrospect).

Whenever I look in a mirror I look just like me but the eyes are weird/not quite right. However one time I looked quite a bit younger which was excellent!

My new thing now is to look down at what I'm wearing when I'm in F3 because it's usually some classical garment (long flowing dress or belted toga) which I find fascinating. I don't know who is dressing me in the astral but I approve!

Yes, this is one of the better research studies out there. Saw the author on The Colbert Report. Very convincing.

For me I've only been able to after getting a good 5 hours of sleep - preferably 7 - and that's usually between 6am and 9am. I get the heavy vibrations after taking a nap, though, so should try it sometime.
137  Astral Projection & Out of Body Experiences / Welcome to Out of Body Experiences! / Re: OOBE songs - Radiohead + on: May 17, 2011, 21:14:58
I don't listen to the radio much other than Pandora.

Saw Massive Attack at the Santa Barbara Bowl this year and it was mind-blowing. They often deal with mind-altering subjects (probably because most of them were on mind-altering substances).  Would give my eye teeth to see Radiohead live -- Thom Yorke was also here last year but I missed him.
138  Astral Projection & Out of Body Experiences / Welcome to Out of Body Experiences! / OOBE songs - Radiohead + on: May 17, 2011, 19:00:07
I love Radiohead's new song "Separator" - reminds me of what it feels like to be OOB. Here's the lyrics and the link.

It's like I'm falling out of bed
From a long, weary dream
The sweetest flowers and fruits hang from the trees
Falling off the giant bird that's been carrying me
It's like I'm falling out of bed from a long and vivid dream

Just exactly as I remember
Every word
Every gesture
I'm a heart in cold ground

Like I'm falling out of bed
From a long and weary dream
Finally I'm free of all the weight I've been carrying

Every woman blows her cover
In the eye of the beholder
I'm a fish now out of water

Falling off a giant bird that's been carrying me

I fell open
I laid under
At the tip out
I was just a number

I wanna slip it over
And get back under
And if you think this is over
Then you're wrong
If you think this is over
Then you're wrong

(Wake me up, wake me up)

If you think this is over
Then you're wrong
If you think this is over
Then you're wrong

(Wake me up, wake me up)

Like I'm falling out of bed from a long and weary dream
Finally I'm free of all the weight I've been carrying

When I ask you again
When I ask you again
Wake me up, wake me up

"The Cell" deals with LDs in an interesting way.

"What the Bleep Do We Know" is also of metaphysical interest.
140  Astral Chat / Welcome to News and Media! / Re: Nothing is as it Seems on: May 17, 2011, 18:40:33
I've had a two precognitive LDs both of which I was 'shaken' awake from, perhaps so I would remember them.

One was my future boyfriend introducing himself by name who said "he was the one" but that I shouldn't tell him when I met him (since undoubtedly this would have freaked him out). Sure enough two weeks later I met a man with this name who would become my boyfriend and be instrumental in my life. This is someone I wouldn't normally have dated but I gave him a chance and it changed my life. I believe when we come to crucial crossroads that our higher self interjects these messages instead our usual stumbling along figuring it out for ourselves.

(The other dream was information a co-worker needed and it helped save his job since the scenario I described materialized that day so he was emotionally ready for it.)

I also awoke on the morning of the Japanese earthquake to see a vortex spinning in my room. Not sure what that meant - either to stay in the vortex (Abraham Hicks term) about earth changes or it was a glimpse of the whirlpools I saw on the news that day from the tsunami.

Lately my husband and I will say a (usually unusual) phrase and then the TV will air exactly the same phrase seconds later. It's a fun way to get validation that we're tapped in.

142  Dreams / Welcome to Dreams! / Re: Beautiful, Vivid music... on: May 17, 2011, 03:34:27
I've heard full blown original symphonies to Aretha Franklin singing "Respect" (appropriate at the time) to the point now where I chant or sing whenever I have an OOBE because it always makes the experience better (and keeps me lucid longer - I think it's a combination of breathing slower/deeper and having something to focus on that is not my own fearful/normal thoughts).

To accompany the music I've had the most incredible visuals -- from flying through white puffy clouds to lately seeing classic Buddhist mandalas (instead of them being static they are animated which makes them pretty trippy and wonderful).

Enjoy and experiment by singing/playing along and see what happens.
143  Astral Projection & Out of Body Experiences / Welcome to Out of Body Experiences! / Re: "Threatening" Territory during OBE on: May 17, 2011, 03:19:44
OK boys, it's like the Shites and the Sunnies here - splitting hairs. I originally posted this topic so I'm going to give my two cents even though I'm a newcomer.

Many books/spiritual traditions/teachers talk about the fact we generate an astral body when we sleep that is separate from our physical selves and this is automatic, not a conscious separation. I've actual seen my husband's astral body hovering above his physical body when he sleeps so I think this could very well be true. So it's just a matter of semantics of whether we call it a LD or OOBE -- both happen when we are CONSCIOUS when the separation occurs (or become conscious later which is rarer in my experience).

Whether we feel the body lift out or not is inconsequential. It's our consciousness that is projecting, not our bodies. In fact, our larger 'higher self' isn't in our physical bodies anyway so we're just merging with the greater "all that is" where there is no spatial 3-D limitations.  I've had hundreds approaching thousands of conscious LDs and OOBEs over the last 20 years and this is my humble opinion.
144  Astral Chat / Welcome to News and Media! / Re: Nothing is as it Seems on: May 17, 2011, 01:50:42
This is related to the study that received all the press about students who were precognitive when it came to emotional images (especially porn). They had split second reactions to the image BEFORE they saw it. Similar theories were explored in the book "Blink." Goes to show you there's more than meets the eye when it comes to our senses. http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn20447-journal-rejects-studies-contradicting-precognition.html
145  Astral Chat / Welcome to Astral Chat! / Re: "Insidious": Worst portrayal of AP *ever* *SPOILERS* on: May 16, 2011, 02:41:49
Best movie on lucid dreaming/AP is "Waking Life" just because it's a great movie.

Tangentially related: "The Matrix" and "Source Code."

Even though "Inception" isn't accurate, I've been having more OBEs from the normal dream state lately (doing the rope technique while in a normal dream so to become lucid and go to another level). I used to only have WILDs so this is new for me. I'll occasionally have 3 levels so there is something valid to phases of dreamstates that "Inception" touches upon.
146  Astral Projection & Out of Body Experiences / Welcome to Astral Projection Experiences! / Re: Does it matter which way or position you practice? on: May 16, 2011, 02:26:59
For years I've only been able to project or have lucid dreams when laying on my back however the other day I was able to while on my left side when I lifted my astral hand (and could see a shadowy white outline with my fingers starting to disappear as Robert Monroe describes) so rolled out onto the floor instead of my usual up and out rope technique. Nice to have this option since I usually sleep on my side.

Buddhists teach different lucid dreaming techniques for men and women; I think they advise women to sleep on their right side and men on the left. I noticed Stephen LaBarge at Stanford had an online questionnaire on this so perhaps we'll have some quantitative data on this soon!
147  Astral Projection & Out of Body Experiences / Welcome to Out of Body Experiences! / Re: "Threatening" Territory during OBE on: May 14, 2011, 00:42:38
Yes, I agree with the last few posts -- in my experience there's little difference between an OBE and lucid dreams (I have both all the time and go through the similar stages of an OBE in a lucid dream but just don't have the 'lift out of the body' sensation and see the room). Staying fully conscious in either state will help you get to the next realm and further from normal unconscious dreaming.

Lately 'reality' in my waking world is coming up with some downright magical manifestations, it just takes a little longer to see the manifestation than in the dream/OBE world. So like many spiritual traditions believe, perhaps waking life is just a more 'stable' dream but your dreaming nonetheless and when you die is when you really wake up (well, maybe, you could get stuck in a lower F3, but I'm hopeful we progress).
148  Astral Projection & Out of Body Experiences / Welcome to Astral Projection Experiences! / Re: Strange "voices" on: May 13, 2011, 20:03:26
Similar to your hearing voices from out of nowhere while awake, after meditating the other day I heard music (sort of like New Age sitar) for 5 minutes and I kept walking around the house to see where it was coming from until I plugged my ears and realized it was coming from my inside my head! Fascinating. (Dr. Oliver Saks wrote a book about people who hear music all the time so glad that isn't me.)

Hasn't happened before or since but could be related to hearing hi-def music in my dreams, usually original, and know that it's not coming FROM me but I'm beaming into some channel, perhaps not unlike Mozart who reportedly said he dreamed most of his compositions.
149  Psychic and Paranormal / Welcome to Psychic and Paranormal! / Re: Have you seen a ghost? on: May 13, 2011, 19:55:18
All the time - mostly floating holographic heads but one full body that was quite bright and detailed. Also felt one spoon me at the Fairmont in Seattle (old hotel, makes sense), a very angry/aggressive one in Prague, an American Indian in Scottsdale, and once felt hands on my lower back when my back went out.

Not sure it these are intelligent haunts (one zipped playfully out and back through a window 3x which probably was) or residual energy from the place, or bleed throughs from other dimensions that I'm more sensitive to when I awake. Makes sense that so many here have seen them since I bet there's a connection between having OBEs and being more sensitive to energy/clairvoyance.
150  Astral Projection & Out of Body Experiences / Welcome to Out of Body Experiences! / Re: "Threatening" Territory during OBE on: May 13, 2011, 19:44:08
Yes, I've often thought that any challenges that come up are tests much like the Buddha experienced when he was 'attacked' during meditation by manifestations of his fears. He eventually learned that it was all an illusion of his own making and that there was nothing ever to fear in the waking 'real' world either. This is evidenced in the dream world when you send love or humor to a negative entity and it transforms into something positive (or disappears).

Perhaps it's like police training where they continuously go through attack drills so that police officers learn how to react calmly and at their best without letting the adrenalin rush you would normally experience turn them to mush. I can hear news that normally would freak out most people and not let it get to me so perhaps it's working!

Thanks for sharing your key dream. I love it and there's many layers here to translate. What I find interesting about the guides or characters like the one you describe is how they feel neutral when they are giving you the test (which makes me think they are of your own making) vs. some of those that give you brilliant advice or a feeling of pure love (which makes me think they are actually guides). It's the emotions you're picking up that are the telling and the emotions/focus you radiate (rather than your words) that really transform your experience.
