my mind does not have a shut up button. How can I stop all the thinking?

Darkangel,
This is the typical human condition. One of the reasons people practice meditation is to learn how to quiet their mind; so, that might be a  good place to start.
Good luck,

What did you mean about "starting your vision 2 inches off of the surface"?
bondgirl,
For whatever reason, during my two OBE's I started with my focus very close to a surface (as if my nose was right above a table surface), wooden in both cases. In the first one, I simply 'lifted up', expanding my field-of-view until I could see all around. Unfortunately in this second OBE I was interrrupted just as I was doing that.

PS - Glad to see your post has generated some interest!
PPS - I have heard of other people having OBE's and sort of getting stuck up against a wall, facing it, and being unable to move; luckily I wasn't stuck in position

began to vizualize myself as if I was already out of my body, and looking down at my physical body from above.

Hi bondgirl,
Your technique worked for me last night! This was (only) my second OBE, so I'm not exactly a master. I skipped all preliminary preparations, and had no vibrations, flashings, or other indicators that I was getting ready. It was fast.  This was @ 5:30 AM; I usually get up at 6:00 AM.  As I did in my first OBE, I started with my focus about 2" off of a surface - this is the same as my first experience.

The downside was my wife woke me up almost immediately by rolling over  sad , so I only experienced the OBE for about six seconds, just long enough to verify what was going on.

a really good technique, which in fact i have been trying myself occasionly thinking it wont work
Harliquin,
This only took about three attempts over a ten second period, i.e., I lost some focus the first two times, and simply re-focused outside. It worked well, so keep at it. I'd suggest don't try hard, just gently re-focus every time any distracting thought pops up. BTW During both of my experiences I was mentally reaffirming my desire to go OB. I believe if there is any fear involved it might be difficult to achieve this state. Good luck!

It's not a thing, it's an energy . . . yogis train to develop it's flow.

Venus,
I would start by explaing a lucid dream first, and then describe an OBE.

More specifically, I would explain that when you are dreaming everything simply 'happens' and you are more observer than participant. In the case of either OBE's or lucid dreams there is intentionality; you cause things to happen moment-by-moment, exactly as you do in an 'awake' state.

Hi Adaly,
And welcome. That was a wonderful experience; thank you for sharing. I can relate to everything up to the change of state you experienced upon passing through the roof. Can't wait to her further comments from other forum members.

I am surprised by this thread. I need perfect conditions and plenty of time to even come close.

i however would not challenge you to this...but i will say that saying "opinions don't mean anything" is a fools statement.
Huh? Lop - didn't you just basically state that by having an opinion different from yours,  VagusEques made a 'fools statement'? Sounds like a challenge to me!

Quote
all we have is opinions...even relativity is just a widely shared opinion
Now this is an actual fools statement. There are certainly laws of nature that couldn't care less what you think.
Tell gravity it's just my opinion when you jump off a ten story building. I bet you splat, even if it's not your opinion.

i'd rather go out there and see for myself...
Obviously the very idea Vagus was attempting to promulgate in his response (vs. listening to the opinions of the masses).

Finally, your most arrogant position. Because you haven't experienced something, it can't exist?

I once heard that when you're younger your ties with the 6th sense and all that more... intact? Is that true?

This is considered true up to the age of 2 or 3 years old.

Endless Dave,
Thanks for that link to a side of Lovecraft I wasn't aware of - this makes some of his writings much more interesting! If you are familiar with the SciFi writer Roger Zelazny, I always thought a lot of his imagery (moving through the worlds) must also be derived from personal experience.
