but seriously, you're doing it wrong.  practical magic works if you're willing to commit to learning how to do it properly (properly is a relative term in this context) and to the discipline it takes.

What makes you think that? Couldn't they be just regular joes without physical bodies?

I'm still wondering how there is proof that it was a random spirit at all.

I'm not denying the idea of a populated metaphysical universe, but it still seems like the most likely answer in a lot of these "automatic writing", "intuitive communication", etc. etc., type experiences is that it is your own mind talking to you.  i'm not saying that it's not a part of your mind that exists at a level far removed from the physical, but it doesn't have to be an independent "spirit" or whatever either. 

i'll put it this way, when i work with my pendulum, i don't believe that some discarnate entity if controlling the movement of the pendulum at my request to provide me with the answers i need.  i saw this stuff everyday at my last job, everyone always rambled on about the spirits or their guides and blah blah blah.  to me that is causing more harm to individual growth and development because it's accepting a subordinate position in the grand scheme of reality.  when i use my pendulum, i am responding to my question.  my self knows the answer and provides it.  i am reaching deep into the parts of my mind that aren't easily accessible through normal conscious awareness for a "quick answer".  if i need a more in depth answer i might refer to the rune stones, but the source of information is still me, i'm just spending more time exploring the answer.  if i need a lot of help, like one on one help, i'll use deep meditation to actively interact with my "subconscious"/"unconscious", that part of me that is aware of it's connection with reality.   

but it's still all me.

Well what if instead of giving you wining numbers, what if a spirit could tell you what stocks to invest in? Would that be easier for them to figure out?
