So, it is approaching the Winter holiday season and I am sleepless at 4am and thinking about seasonal stories and movies such as "A Christmas Carol" and "It's a Wonderful Life". These are wonderful stories and the obvious Non-Physical(NP)/OBE qualities contained therein cause me a certain fascination. Then it strikes me, the NP qualities of another movie- "The Wizard of OZ". That movie has some incredible NP theory going on...

Now don't immediately search the movie...let's hear some ideas on the Non-Physical, OBE-like aspects of this movie...

Thoughts?

A Christmas Carol is my absolute favorite (1984 movie production). I watch it several times around Christmas.

For the Wizard of Oz, here is one from me -  the tornado, house spinning in the air = vibrations

 This will be fun!  smiley

If I can start, I will name one and that's the Tornado that acts as the "Vortex or Portal" that leads to the World of Oz itself!

Many times in my own NP adventures Tornados are used as "board sweeps" or complete "scenario changers". They are definitely life changing events here in this physical realm as well.
At first I feared them in my NP adventures. Then I was sucked up by one of them and found it was indeed some kind of portal that could be utilized.

EDIT: Ah, Lightbeam beat me!  tongue  She was posting the same time I was, but she hit the "Save" button first, lo!  grin cheesy

Ooo, I've got one just don't ask why. You know the three little dudes that sing to Dorothy before she begins her trip down the yellow brick road. Notice how they vibrate, she could have exited at that point but stuck with it.

It's a Wonderful Life. When our main character jumps off the bridge: time travel, missing time, portal?

This is fun grin

Toto unveiling the curtain exposing the trickster magician ('god') and his machinery.

Same as we in the atral can do with many so-called negs or fear-related beings or events.

Pull back the curtain, show no fear and reveal what is really 'behind' them.

How about the transition from black and white to vivid technicolor? Does this represent perception of the mundane Physical Reality changing to the Non-Physical? Or from the monotone Etheric Plane to the much more vivid Astral Plane?

Yes. It kind of compares to the grainy images becoming ever more vivid in full color, sometimes "technicolor", as we get deeper into a good NP focus.

All of those suggestions by everyone above are great comparisons!  smiley

The tornado is definitely a symbol of portals/vibrations/ roaring/exit sensations. The images that flash by her window strike me as hypnogogia. The shift from black&white to color suggests transition to the astral. Toto the dog is an interesting possible psychological aspect, maybe of Dorothy's curiosity, getting her into various situations but eventually pulling the curtain back on the great and powerful Wizard.

What could the ruby red slippers represent and the fact that Dorothy took them from the Wicked Witch?

Does anyone know that the "Rainbow" song was initially cut from the movie? Three times!!! The most iconic movie song of all time almost didn't make it into the final version! Have a read-

That's intersting EV. Would have been very sad for that song not to have made it into the movie.

One more interesting fact about that song that is only personal to me. The first time I watched Wizard of Oz. When Judy Garland began singing that song I very distinctly heard it sung differently. I loved the version I heard in my head. Many years later Israel Kamakawiwo sang the exact same version I heard in my head.

I read somewhere that that occurrence with the song being different was one of those "Mandela effect" things!  huh undecided

I listened to Radio talk show the other day and they spoke of a number of things that were deemed the "Mandela effect". One that really shocked me was from the James Bond movie where Jaws, one of the bad guys, falls off a ski rope wire into a home above. Jaws is basically indestructible, so he lives. He comes out of a home that he fell through when he fell and he sees this petite pretty woman. He then looks at her and smiles, showing his enormous metal teeth (which gave him his name Jaws) and she smiles back at him and reveals her "braces". It was love at first sight. But now, you can't find that anymore. I was confused by that because that scene basically justified and kind of explained why they would have feel in love at first sight. He is a towering giant and she is just this small little thin girl. But the sight or each other's "metals" made it perfect.

grin I did see this one movie . Yes there was a time in my youth that I actually watch Tv
the one most important scene would certainly be how the wizard was just this ordinary little man behind the curtain to make you think that he is much more serious and powerful. But really when the fears are seen for what really they are, we can see how much potentially powerful we are. I also saw the Lord of the ring , might be just the first one I think ...  but boy oh boy that made an impact on me:roll: grin which made me do lots of thinking about the power that ring has and how you can fall into the scene you focus.

Nameless, a description of that process may be in order...did you possibly tap into that 'astral creative level' that Israel did? I have touched on it in only very inferior ways, but your story rings true. What a meaningful, really haunting version he does...so cool that you somehow tapped into that!

The ruby red slippers that Dorothy takes from the Wicked Witch- Do they represent the power of newfound young woman sexuality or maybe Root Chakra energy or Kundalini that powers an OBE? Is that why the sister Witch chases her for the slippers? To re-capture that innocent energy?

Do the 3 companions represent the 3 qualities that need development along the OBE path? The cowardly Lion represents the need to develop courage and to pass many Fear tests. The Scarecrow represents the need to develop the intelligence and cognitive abilities while in the OBE state. The Tin-Man represents the need to develop and release the Heart Chakra, to be ready to rely upon Compassion whenever it is called for...

Some very interesting ideas involved in all this...

Plume, Lord of the Rings I read when I was 13...loved it!!!

Wow, everyone here has such great responses.  When this thread started I would never have linked this movie to OBE/AP’ing since AP’ing is quite new to me.  You have all opened my eyes.  I decided to try and come up with some symbolism myself.  The only things I think I can add are maybe Dorthy following the Yellow Brick Road which was possibly her path to enlightenment.  The other thing that comes to mind is when she wants to end the experience and she clicks her heels three times and says ‘There’s no place like home’.  She could be thinking about being back in her body as being home and clicking her heels could be like moving her physical feet or wiggling that Big Toe!

I could safely say you're right T-Man. The yellow brick road (path to enlightenment) and clicking her heels to go home. Excellent observations!

I have no idea what happened EV. We were watching the movie and Dorothy starts singing and I'm hearing quite vividly this other version which sounded so much better that by the end of it I was wanting Dorothy to just hush and let me hear this other version. The first time I hear Izzy's version I almost fell over with something akin to total shock. The most beautiful thing I ever heard.

Um, the vampiric qualities of the bad witches? Chasing Dorothy for her innocent and youthful energy? I can see that.

Great points T-Man! The Yellow Brick Road is definitely the Path to Enlightenment! The Emerald City, I haven't worked out but it does sound cool! I hadn't tied the idea of 'clicking her heels' to breaking Sleep Paralysis but that was a great idea! Thank you and that was exactly the kind of feedback I was hoping for! grin

The Good Witch Glinda tells Dorothy that she 'always had the ability to go Home' which means to me the understanding of Intent within the NP. You can go wherever you want as long as you put your mind to it.

Having done a few internet searches, I find that the idea of the ruby red slippers may have been a movie decision and nothing more symbolic; the slippers may have been originally silver.

The prompt for this whole topic occurred for me one morning at about 4am. I will share this- That there is a level, a kind of river current of creative thought, idea and visualization available to us all; and it is found within profound moments of silence, quiet, meditation or even at the border of sleep and dream. No special skills are required to gain access, just the willingness. Socrates, Aristotle, Galileo, Franklin, Edison, Tesla, Einstein, Paul McCartney have all talked about tapping into it...they didn't necessarily recognize it or understand it but they accessed it, and once they did they realized they could go back to it...no special ability is required...we all can do this.

There is actually the idea that specific thoughts, concepts and discoveries are 'floating' out there, waiting for the proper time and person to 'download' them...maybe the Wizard was one of those...

Deciding to start this thread, I had no idea it would lead to this:https://www.theosophyforward.com/articles/theosophy-and-the-society-in-the-public-eye/129-theosophical-wizard-of-oz
