I see your point, and it's a good one. I would just like to say, without implying that you meant this, that arguing/debating is one thing, and insulting is another. It's one thing to say to somebody "Yes, I see where you're coming from, but how do you explain blah blah blah?" and quite another to say "That's the stupidest thing I ever heard, there's no way that could happen, you're such a moron, blah blah blah." There are different levels on which a person can argue their point, and I prefer to stick to the higher levels and avoid insulting the other person. If I disagree with someone, I have absolutely no problem telling them why. Having an ego is important, but the ego must be brought under control and used only when necessary, such as for that drive we may sometimes need to accomplish our goals. Letting the ego take over leads to fighting and more primitive ways of solving problems.

quote:
I can't remember who it was that said it, but some Greek philospher (perhaps Plaito)but who cares, he believed that the best way to solve a problem was to put a bunch of clever people into a room and just let them argue until they reach an outcome. Now I don't know if I aggree entirely with this, but it raises an interesting point.

That reminds me of a quote about democracy:

There is an issue on which the general population is evenly divided. You take 100 of the smartest people you can find, and put them in a room to discuss the issue.
There are two possible outcomes:

The intelligent people remain equally divided on the issue. Therefore intelligence is irrelevant to democracy. Ouch.

Or, the intelligent people all agree. This means that intelligence is highly relevant to resolving issues, but democracy prevents it from having an effect. Ouch again.

Yes Enderwiggin, I aggree with your point. I do think though, that there is a danger in this forum of big headedness from some people. It is something that is just starting to develop, a cliche of people who seem to believe they exude wisdom. It is worth remembering that everyone is human and makes mistakes and has faults. everyone!

Absolutely. Nobody is perfect. But then you never know who has wisdom and who doesn't. It is up to us to be able to tell true wisdom from false wisdom. There are different levels of wisdom. What may seem wise to one person may seem mundane to another. I think it's important to keep all of the elements of the posts where they are at the moment, in order to learn how to deal with them. I used to go into chat rooms online before the pornography industries started advertising their sites and preying on young, curious children there. Now I wouldn't think twice about staying away from chat rooms, with all the flaming and stupidity that goes on in them. I tried writing to AOL about my concerns about the porn ads in those rooms but they were unreachable and I also did not receive an email back from the letter I wrote to them. They obviously don't care. Not going into chat rooms is my way of dealing with them.

What does all this have to do with what I am saying? The younger generation is going to have a much tougher time obtaining wisdom than we are having. Our society is breeding a race of ignorant human beings and encourages closed-minded thinking. If you think these forums are bad now, just wait ten or twelve years. It may not even take that long It is imperative that we hold strong against those individuals out there who choose to post porn ads and travel the path of evil. I'm glad this forum has moderators to prevent those kinds of thing from happening. People like Adrian are good to have around. I also like the fact that they post their opinion as well and give others a fair chance to state what they believe. They hardly delete anything.

I think it is important that people post their opinions and beliefs and be able to do so without being flamed or bashed for it. Some people don't realize they have a big head. I understand where you're coming from with the arse-kissing and false sense of wisdom. But the way I see it, someone will bring it to the attention of everyone, as you have. If your explanation was not good enough for people, eventually someone else's will be.

I am not normally one to post controversially, as I don't feel it is very productive in some cases. That is some cases! Contrary to some forum posts today, I believe that often, conflict under control can be beneficial.

Let me explain, if astonomers had not argued and argued about the fact that the earth was round many hundreds of years ago, then we'd still believe it is flat. Or if, instead of going to war on Hitler in WW2, we'd just sat around and said "ah mr Hitler raises some interesting points, so he killed a few million Jew's, he's perfectly entitled to his own opinion." then you wouldn't even want to imagine the kind of world we'd be living in (or not living in today).

Anyway, going back to the point in the subject heading. I do sincerely believe that there are a group of people in these forums and all over the world who, instead of having a good old debate, or argument whatever you call it, are far more partial to sitting down congratulating each other and kissing some serious arse, and getting their heads stuck so far up there as a consequence these people will surely have to have surgery to implant glass stomachs!

Please guys, lets keep arguing (to a degree) and being passionate about what you believe.

I am well aware that I have waffled on, and now its your turn. I am also aware that I have probably stirred up some controversy with this post, that was my intention. So what do you say we remove heads from adjacent arses and get debating, as that is what I believe these forums are for.

 thank you for listening.
