I have known for a long time about how it isn't good be be materialist and that there is no real satisfaction in gaining material possessions. My problem is that just now I have realised how much or a materialist I am/have become. I would like to change this and I would be glad of any help of how to become less dependant and attached to possessions. Thankyou for your help  smiley

It sounds like you already solved your problem: You don't get real satisfaction from material possessions. Knowing that and understanding it is the biggest step. Now, you can make choices in what you need and don't need without materialistic impulses. You can still have materials, but can live in a balance where they don't control your feelings and actions.

Maybe now the satisfaction you used to get from materials will show up in other, more positive aspects of your life.

In my opinion, the first thing you should do should be to look around your house/apartment, and make a list of all the things you could get rid of. Think hard about what you actually NEED, and what you WANT. Or, used to want, more specifically. There's no reason to be wasteful, of course. Most of the stuff you get rid of you could do in a good way. Give some things away as gifts, or give some stuff to charity! That way you don't just break the cycle of materialism, you also help people! Good karma, eh? wink

There are in every man, always, two simultaneous allegiances, one to God, the other to Satan. Invocation of God, or Spirituality, is a desire to climb higher, that of Satan, or animality, is delight in descent.

Some people practice being minimalists....they don't have a single thing on their walls...no pictures, shelves, posters. They only have the bare essentials in their whole house...and they say it keeps their minds clear and keeps away the materialistic urges.

You could try that or just give a few things you don't need anymore to charity. Clean up the material clutter.
