Recently I was sitting meditating in front of the mirror. When my mind goes completely blank, my image in the mirror start to fade away. Its a strangest thing ever bitbinevitably happens every time.

However when I focus my eyes a little bit to examine what is happening, my image instantly reappears.

When the image fades away I even can see the room behindn me, ha

What do you guys think?

Actually, it's nothing special, it is simply how your vision works.

When you 'stare' at something, the image stagnates and doesn't update properly.
All your senses do this kind of thing.

If you stay in a smelly room, eventually the "smell" goes away.
If you hear something for long enough, the "sound" eventually becomes part of the background.
If you put your hand in warm water, eventually the feeling of the water disappears.

This is also why you blink... it "resets" the image you're seeing.  Any movement causes this action to trigger.
You can use this to project with your eyes open actually... but it requires you to not move for a very long time.  LOL  Easier said than done... but if you're able to, eventually you'll end up seeing "nothing".
That point when you see "nothing" is actually when what we call "the void" kicks in.  It's what you see when there's nothing to see.

One of the methods of regressing to past lives is to stare in to a mirror .

I actually ponder the physics of reality and wonder, if the whole world is a projection of our own thoughts/conciousness, as what our eyes depict is only an illusion of bouncing light (we do not totally understand the structure of light either) it would make sense in deep meditation for us to "disapear" as we lose focus on projecting our physical selves into the realm of reality, would also explain why you could see what was behind you. Just a thought lol

Oh, I love that thought too. Basically, I love every outside of the box idea challenging something we normally take for granted. And the more it is taken for granted, the more I like to undermine the concept. Some of you might have noticed. grin But really, it is such a good feeling of freedom not to be bound by anything.
And this one is really fabulous. It could actually set you free from every law of physics here, you could do anything not by thinking you could do it, but just by using focus. Wow. Gonna try if out. The part where you lose focus might be tricky, though. grin

Nothing as we know it is certain, with infiniate possibilities, why not even consider the insane, outrageous and extraordinary? There are tons of things we are unsure of or even agree on. Which kinds on concepts are you specifically refering to? I would love to hear some of your "outside of the box" thinking Smiley

In general, every concept which operates with the idea that physical matter is the only thing that is. But it is hard to come up with something you have not come across, since members of this forum are pretty much on the same wavelength. But not so long ago I also reasoned on this forum why the theory that negs are only part of ourselves and creation of our minds could be wrong. Not necessarily because I think so but because I felt it was developing into kind of a dogma here so I felt the need to challenge just as I do with every dogma.
Oh, I hate dogmas. The scientific and medical ones in particular. I have been involved in this field for quite some time and love it but find it just sad how closeminded people in this field are. I don't only mean those ‘our consciousness is just a chain of chemical reactions in our brain‘ there is nothing but matter‘ statements. I have also witnessed and/or experienced first hand some medical treatments which are considered pseudoscientific and ineffective or even harmful and seen how effective they actually are. They are still not approved of or even banned in some cases, though. Not saying that some alternative treatments are NOT scam.
You would also find me agreeing with many so called conspiracy theories because facts are not always on the side of the official description of events. And I ignore the dogma that ‘a democratic government would never do that‘ or ‘aliens don't exist because weather balloons‘ a big time. grin
I could list some of my views on the nature of reality, too. But I would probably just repeat someone else's words from here.
Anyway, every time I see such an idea as yours here it is like a fresh air. smiley

I guess I kind of just assumed that it was in there... in my mind, I know the experience he's talking about.
Standing in front of a mirror, staring at yourself... you disappear... your mind fills in the blanks for you.  It's just how your eyes/mind work.

Think about it like this... you actually have two blind spots right in front of your field of view.  Google it for me if you don't believe me.
When you find it and test it on yourself... realize that you can still see the "stuff" in those blind spots.  Figure that one out and maybe you'll find the answer.

Sorry, I just kind of assume that some stuff I think about magically comes out in the words I type.  Smiley

If we are in fact materializing our own reality, why wouldn't one experience as you describe, if they believed in it, and hence materialized it to be true within their reality? Have they not believed this to be true, it would not have been materialized within that reality, and hence not be true.
Tongue Come'on get more creative, science is useless if it taints the creativity of the mind, if you want to use science, use it in a positive, encouraging, creativity way.
Why not consider something more extreme? I do not think this person would have the "feeling" of this being something significant, unless it truly was.
Here is some fun science for you, atoms react differently when they are observed, then when they are not being watched. What is that all about?

In general, every concept which operates with the idea that physical matter is the only thing that is.

I'm not sure if I said it here before but,
we must experience every variable degree of reality,
some must experience a reality which is dull, lifeless, and is subject to unchanging physical and scientific laws based souly on the worship of people claiming it to be so, for whatever reason they claim it to be, proving or disproving these facts with evidence which may, and may not even support or prove what they are proving or disproving, it's all about perspective, point of view, and purpose. I think anything that serves a purpose against humanity, creativity, and the imagination, is useless though. I simply do not see anything constructive of it.

Then there are those of us, not afraid to question the fundamental beliefs of reality, because our minds are not shackled by the beliefs of others, we are free to our own thoughts, concepts, and ideas. This is how the most spectacular of inventors and geniuses were created, didn't Eisenstein fail math? Smiley I'm surprised I didn't fail spelling, I have no idea if that is spelt right. WHOOT REBNELLION SCREW YOU WORDS I SPELL HOW I WANT.

Allow every person their personal experience, beliefs and reality, it is their free will, respect theirs as you wish yours to be respected, but do not let them negativity effect what you experience and view the world to be. Personally I think beliefs are dangerous, and you should never 100% believe anything, it can be a prison, it doesn't allow room for learning or new information, this is why cults don't allow their members to learn anything outside of what they want them to know, they may say anything they don't agree with is "evil" or "false". Sounds kind of like science and some religions, huh? They can believe what they want, and so can you, so if you want to believe in something, believe in whatever makes you the most happy. It is essentially impossible to prove whatever reality is anyway, and with the endless, trillions upon infinite possibilities, if you are gonna believe one, believe whatever is the most constructive for your life, and the lives of those you effect.

I'm not quite sure I understand what you're asking.

We're making the assumption first that when they're not being observed, then they're "doing something".
What if they're not?  What if while not being observed... they just simply don't exist?
I don't think science has the ability to perceive something as simply not being there... this is why quantum mechanics throws everything we know into a tailspin.

You are who you are and you can't be anything outside that.

In the end, I try to be as cryptic and crazy as possible... it's no fun otherwise and beyond that, nobody thinks when they're directly given the answer.  Wink
Too many people want the answers given to them on a silver platter... you don't learn.  I know this for a fact as it's part of my own direct experience.
The lesson can NEVER be learned until it becomes part of YOUR experience.

Man I'm so the oposite, I'm just dishn out every recipe I got with some completely unrelated side dish that is so comfusing its a triple inverted paradox. It's awesome how there seems to be someone to fit every role, and it can be fun too. I'm especially enjoying the pointless jabber between the two sides of logic and fiction, good and evil, female and male, when it all boils down, they are all the same thing!!

Perhaps as humans we thrill off being challenged and having conflict, perhaps in a more constructive sense, they improve eachother this way.

The worst thing in the universe is being on the "wrong" side and going"oooh...... My bad..." Then just feeling like an idiot. But then it's ok cause you be like, "but it doesn't really matter who is right.... Right?" Lol!

Don't they say, it's not about winning, it's about playing the game?
Not about the destination, it's about the journey?

Sorry different tangent.

What would we do anyway, if we actually figured out and knew everything? And there was nothing left unknown?
I wonder if we would be bored,
So we would build a machine to reset life,
And erase our memories,
To re-learn it all over again,
And that my friend, is how babies are born. Lol actually idk, good thing too, WOULD BE A SHAME to reset before saving all my game data. But if you actually play videogames, you know after you beat the game, you never really play that save file again just cause it isn't as appealing.

This is called scrying. If you practice it a bit you can make things appear in the mirror and eventually develop a useful skill.  trippy isn't it. grin

You can phase or astrally project once you learn to control it a bit. Once you can impose images on the mirror at will then insert your consciousness into that image.. draw it in closer to you until your in 3D and there you go

Hey, this is an interesting topic for sure. When I stare at something not too big for a few seconds it also disappears, but then I get distracted because my eyes start dropping tears. After reading this topic I tried staring at myself for a mirror for a few seconds, one of my arms became three times wider than it is, and generally there's some weird excrement happening before I get distracted. Anyway about what Xanth said that it's how your vision works and your mind fills the blanks. We can make a very simple experiment but it will require someone that can stare himself in the mirror until he disappears at will. This will go like this:
You sit in a comfortable position for your meditation and close your eyes
Someone goes into your room, puts some object behind you (say a box), this box should be completely covered by your body so you won't see it in the mirror right away after you open your eyes but only see it when your image disappears. You must not know there's a box behind you. You'd of course know there's something that someone you know put there, but you shouldn't be able to tell what it is. To make the experiment 100% correct, the one who put the box should also draw something on it, a star, circle, triangle whatever. So you MUST use your eyes to know what is behind you, and since you can't see it, your mind can't fill that blank. It might fill it with a box but not with the picture that someone drew on it. Then you start the meditation process. When you disappear, if you see the box with the drawing behind you it's impossible that it is your mind. It is either:
a) You literally see through yourself
b) You somehow used your third eye to see it (very highly unlikely imho)
If there's no box and you just see your bed or the place you were sitting on, then xanth is probably right.

It actually is an interesting experience. What Xanth said is true,  however,  only to an extent. Even if you are still and do not blink for hours,  your eyes ALWAYS make subtle movements and therefore update the data from the environment that it is translating. If that were not true,  everything ever would disappear from your perspective. Go ahead,  try it. With your eyes open, gently push them with your fingers towards your nose and hold them there so that the subtle, involuntary movements stop. You will actually go temporarily blind (and this is not at all dangerous as long as you do not push too hard on your eyes). As long as you are not holding your eyes down,  they will always update information atleast every few seconds. Seeing the background behind you is what particularly interests me. Even if it was just a sensory sensitivity thing,  why would that enble you to see what is behind you?

http://io9.com/5804116/why-every-human-has-a-blind-spot---and-how-to-find-yours

Just in case someone didn't know what I was referring to above.

What's important to note is this part:
It doesn't just happen with a white background. Try the same with colored paper, and your mind will fill in the background color of the paper when the mark gets in your blind spot. You don't see as much of the world as you think.

Your "brain" fills in the missing information for you.  You have these two blind spots in front of your face 24 hours a day, 7 days a week... and you never notice them.

The blind spot is not directly in front of you,  though. Assuming the person was meditating in front of the mirror as the title suggests,  his whole image should not disappear.

Yes.
But what I'm trying to illustrate here is that your mind is able to fill in a lot of information even when it, supposedly, doesn't exist.

I tell you people we need to do an experiment to test this out, as I posted earlier put something behind the person that meditates, without him know what you put there ofc and then we'll test if he can see that thing, or not.
