Why do anything? I attempt to do it because it excites me. It's all about gaining knowledge and wisdom. It's about trying answering questions that cannot be answered any other way. The way i see it, the physical plane is only one part of life, why deny myself of the rest of it? [ ]

Well for me personally, the reason why I have been attempting projection for the last 5-6 months or so is because I wish to try to contact people who have departed and try and gain knowledge from insightful spirits/beings. As for other people here are a list of reasons why one might try projection: preparation for death to see what death my be like to get away from the physical to experience new things to make unknowns knowns contact with physically dead family members to find out about past lives and even in some cases look into future events spiritual progress
there seem to be limitless applications for these kinds of experiences and everyone has their own reason for doing or attempting it, and some actually experience it unwillingly. As for me I have a strong feeling many of my questions can be answered in the astral, and I wish to have some insight into some other things. Well to any would be projectors: good luck.

what you achieve in meditation will echo in your every day life, your spiritual progress, pushing away the daily worldly things and focusing on yourself within you will achieve a balance, internal and external to yourself.

It's kind of funny you ask this question. I take Tai Chi classes twice a week and last time out our instructor paused during our lesson, then said "I don't know why we're actually doing this -- once you learn the pattern it's just the same thing over again". He was half kidding and half just having a bad day.
As for me, I'm just trying to see if anything really is "out there". [?] I figure if it's all just dreams, well, I've wasted time on less interesting things in the past. But if it's real, and if I can connect...

Thank you all for your replies! It helps give me a broader view of the endeavour itself.
I asked it because I myself was wondering why I was interested in it. What did I hope to acheive, etc.?
I wonder, when you set out to project, or get into trance, or whatever, do you set specific goals for yourself? Or do you more just kinda let it happen?

when working with these things, its best to know where you are going, if you know what you are trying to achieve then you work ur way there, instead of just walking the maze blindly. although when talking about meditation, sometimes i just let it happen, i get to this deep deep place where everything is connected, and i just kinda ride it, in one of tools songs he talks of this "i reach out to whatever will bewilder me" you will eventually know what you are doing when the pieces fit together better.

Joya250, I've done meditation both ways. Generally I just focus on clearing my mind and let "come what may". I've had more success that way than when I consciously try to make something happen. Once on a plane trip I'd just succeeded in clearing my mind when pictures of indian hyrogliphs (spelling?) started appearing. They came slowly at first, then faster and faster, then trickled off and stopped. My belief is we flew over a place of power and I was picking up on its energy. Of course, I can't prove this. But things like this are why I like just "setting the stage" and waiting for events. [ ]

I try to astral project because there are lots of questions you can only answer by APing: UFOs,Area51,past events, future events, better life for myself, all kinds of things.

I suppose the main reason why i do it is because of intrigue mainly. A journey of self-discovery.
Escapism i suppose could be another reason. The human race has become a hectic and busy population with everyone investing in material assets and relying on chemicals for their relief. Especially as technology develops, everyones linked up, jacked in and constantly in contact. It's getting to the point that if you want to live a "supposedly" normal exsistance you have to have these things in order to survive. Astral Travel is personal adventure one that you can describe to others but that you expierence uniquely yourself, no technology or gadgets required. - Whoo, went of on a tangent for a sec there.
Oh, fun as well, the rush that no drug could ever surpass.
Peace.

May I ask what kind of questions did you ask and what kind of answers did you get?

It's all about exploring. It's fun, you can learn things. Why not want to do it is a better question.
