The waves you describe are a good sign- I get them sometimes when I'm in trance, and I feel movement- I use them to launch. Now, here's my answer to your questions:
1. What's best to listen to while you attempt? (Binaural beats, mediation music, nothing, etc.)
Everyone is different, but for me nothing is best. This is because sensory deprivation helps to 'tune you in' to nonphysical stimulus.
2. What should your surroundings be? Should the room be all dark? How should you lay? etc.
IMO dark is best for the above mentioned reason, but if darkness makes you uncomfortable, a dim light (like a nightlight) is ok, in fact I understand that the combo of ambient dark and just a dim light (shaded) can stimulate the pineal gland. And no, I don't remember where I read this. But it's up to you.
I project in the early morning before the sun is up, experiment.
As to position, whichever makes you comfortable enough to trance but not so comfortable that you pass out- I use a recliner.
3. My main goal is to visit my best friend that died 5 years ago, should i attempt to travel to his grave which is right down the street?
No and yes- the grave is where his body is, and where you want to see him is in the collective area of the astral where the departed go to. Having said that, if you have an association of him and his grave, then maybe directing yourself there may actually take you where he 'really' is- but If it were me, I'd go to where he used to live, that is, direct yourself there, and you'll end up wherever he is, represented that way.
I will say that I recommend you practice projecting for the sake of projecting first, and when you get a handle on it then try to go to him. I personally have found it helpful to ask for help to be directed to whom I needed to see.
