Was I far away from achieveing a projection?

Hey folks, sorry if these posts are quite common but I was wondering if anyone could tell me how far away I was from projecting?

I've tried on and off for a few months now and was discouraged as I didn't seem to be making any progress. However, yesterday morning I woke up early and went back to sleep. I became aware that I was dreaming and sort of just willed myself to fly out of my head.

I then had an aggressive jolt all the way through my body and what seemed like an explosion in my head. I saw brilliant clear white light with patterns everywhere and I felt the sensation of starting to float upwards. There was a small hole in the distance which I guessed I was going to pass through. It was also white but I could tell that it was there.

Alas, I got excited and the whole thing stopped.

So what I'm wondering is, was I on my way to a projection? Or did I in fact project? If either of these are true then what are the steps that I should take next time?

Hey, sorry I should be more precise. I didn't actually fly out but that was my intent was. I did feel myself rising however, then followed the strange explosion thing in my ears.

Can I ask, now that I have experienced this should it be easier to get back to that stage? I kinda know that I was on the right tracks but I'm just looking for experienced projectors opinions.

I must say though that it was very very very very very cool  Has reignited my interest in projecting for sure.

Sounds like you were in the process of projecting in my own opinion. I've had a similar experience, I sort of felt this ridiculously increasing noise, i knew the sign so I just tried to relax, then a incredible wave throughout my body, I started into the void of my eyelids and saw a tiny blue dot. I looked at it with my peripherals with an air of curiosity, and sort of let things play out. Suddenly the tiny dot grew and grew and grew until it consumed my vision and I was sort of released into the sky. I'd say for tips, just relax. You were very close, you can't tense up when you see that light or whatever it is, just sort of think to yourself, I wonder what this could be, what adventure will this bring me on? And know that it will be a good thing. Those are the only tips i have really.

 Yes, when the light shows up just passively observe and it will take on it's own new shape, then lead you into your adventure for that session. It's amazing how quick it happens sometimes. One Second you see a light, then the light morphs into a building, Island, etc.. This is also where you can add your intent for the session to the projection.

The only part of your initial post I needed to read to know what was going on was this part:  "I became aware that I was dreaming"

That tells me you were consciously aware (of some level) that you were in the non-physical.  That, to me, is an astral projection.

Yeah I'll try next time, I was just completely taken aback at how intense the explosion was!

I'd always been puzzled by this dream I had when I was fourteen. I became fully conscious in this dream and I flew the entire length of my town and met this girl that I liked at the time. I kissed her and felt the sensation that is a kiss, however I didn't kiss a girl until I was sixteen (late bloomer  ). I thought it was a lucid dream but could never get over the fact that A. I could fly and felt wind etc, B. I experienced a kiss even though I'd never physically had one.

Is that how you project? By becoming conscious in your dream?

I think that a lot of what people experience "are" Astral Projections... especially the people who explain their experience away by calling it "just a lucid dream'.
Some people just have a strict labeling nature and they end up tossing aside valid experiences like they were nothing just because it doesn't "fit their tags".

The experience you speak about above would definitely be a projection.  Whether during that projection you had what I call a Lucid Awareness or an Astral Awareness, well only you can really make that determination, but it was DEFINITELY a projection. 

Personally, I accept that all experiences that do not happen in this physical reality to be a "projection" of some sort.

As for myself, I've been having what I "called" Lucid Dreams my entire life... however, I now recognize that *MANY* of those experiences were, in fact, Astral Awareness experiences.  And in actuality, the only thing that I believe that separated my Lucid Awareness Experiences from my Astral Awareness Experiences was how consciously aware I was during them.  That's all.  I believe that it's that level of conscious awareness that tends to throw people off into the incorrect assumption that these must be completely separate experience-types... I don't believe that for a single second, as my direct experiences dictate to me otherwise.

But in the end, what's best is that you have experiences and try to make your own judgment calls from them. 
So yes, you (and many people here actually) have actually had a lot more "Astral Projections" than you/they give yourselves credit for.
Why people try to shrug them off and explain them away is beyond me... they're EXPERIENCES and every single one SHOULD BE TREASURED AS SUCH.
