The Philip Pullman Trilogy are a fantastic treat for young minded readers.
In 'Northern Lights' a willful young girl, Lyra, first hears about dust.  She receives the alethiometer and tries to figure out what all the symbols mean: the dolphin; globe; lute; compass; candle; thunderbolt; horse and so on...Her daemon Pan watches the needle swing on the truth device, and he transforms himself into the tiniest, meekest creature.  He's tagged to her and they begin the first steps on her journey into...

Opening the door into a new world. 'The Subtle Knife' gives Lyra a new relationship with a seeker called Will.  Together they experience challenges to their recognition of existence and fall between thought and action.

The perspective through 'The Amber Spyglass' is overarching and clear.  But Lyra sees enough devastation, she hates the spectre eaten adults and the children running wild and is lead safely into wisdom and independence.

Her final dreams for the future seem perfectly real to me.

Thats awesome, but I am sure I will enjoy the hype far more than the movie itself..

Hmm, I wouldn't think it would be a great movie.  The description is like magical realism to me.  Did the author sell the movie rights?

The movie is being made afaik. But the religious element of the books is being played down (not to offend the american Christians) so i'm not actually sure how it will turn out, as the books basis is the war against heaven.
