There is a tendency that I've read of (and experienced) to wake up when lucid. Usually this occurs after we somehow get a little worked up or excited in the lucid dream.

There is a book I've referred to before that you might have read called Exploring the World of Lucid Dreaming by Stephen LaBerge and Howard Rheingold. The authors talk about the waking up part and say that it is common at first, however with practice we can remain in the lucid dream. I don't seem to have the patience to practice the techniques they mention, however you may want to take a look at the book.

Here's a review of what is contained in the book:

" This is a very practical guide for lucid dreamers. The first half of the book establishes a basic understanding of sleep and dreams, followed by a progressive series of exercises for developing lucid dreaming skills. These include cataloging "dreamsigns" (your personal landmarks that tell you when you are dreaming), the Reflection-Intention and MILD techniques for becoming lucid within the dream, and methods of falling asleep consciously based on ancient Tibetan Yoga practices. After the lucid dream induction techniques, Dr. LaBerge presents his understanding of the origin of dreams, based on current views in the sciences of consciousness and cognition. This provides a foundation for the methods of employing lucid dreams to enhance your life, which make up the second half of the book. The applications described are: adventures and explorations, rehearsal for living, creative problem-solving, overcoming nightmares, healing, and discovery of expanded awareness and spiritual experience. Many delightful anecdotes from lucid dreamers illustrate the use of lucid dreams for each application."

By the way, a great website on lucid dreaming is the following:

I have been finding recently that I am constantly trying to do or remember things that will effect my waking life.  Like in one I was trying to save a couple of bugs that I "found".  I was attempting to put them into containers so that I could show them to people.  I knew and was fully aware that I was dreaming but I thought that I could save them for when I woke up.   I am not exactly sure why.

Another interesting one was when a person, who in waking life I had called and left a message, walked into the dream I was having.  I again knew I was dreaming but thought to ask the person if they got the message I had left earlier in the day.  Oddly the responce I got in the dream was pretty darn close to the one I got from them when I woke up.

It was suggested to me by a friend that the vividness of my dreams and such is the reason for this carry over between sleeping and waking life.  It was suggested that because everything seems so real durring the dream the mind thinks that things will carry over or brings in thoughts of the real world even though I am aware that I am dreaming.  If your dreams are as real and detailed as mine then it is possible that you are experiencing the same kind of interaction.

As far as waking up when you become aware or the dream simply ending because of it, just stick with it.  It will go away and the dreams will continue.  One of the things that I found that has helped me is to not make or try to make any drastic changes right away.  Allow yourself to stay thinking but kinda play along with the dream.  But do little things like ask questions and such that come to mind.  This has helped me build a solid base from which more and more things can be changed.

I am having this wierd problems with my lucid dreams. I can remember my dreams and stuff, but when I am in them I will tell myself stuff that I might need to do when I am concious. The other night I was dreaming and in the dream I told myself "Hey I better tell *friends name* about this dream....its whack!". Yet when I say..this is a dream to myself I wake up instantly or go through a series of dreams when I wake up and then tell myself again that I am dreaming.

Any Help or experiences with the same problem?
