A couple of years ago I had a dream that has stuck with me in vivid detail.  Now, when I dream I am always myself.  I am never a differnt person.  I look the same, I speak the same language, and occasionally there are slight variations on my hairstyles or tattoos but that's about it.  I'm always me.  In this particular dream however I was not me.  I was a Russian fisherman, a man in about his mid to late forties who was short, stocky and sported an unkempt salt and pepper beard.
The dream started as me and two other men of similar age and appearance approached the wooden docks at the edge of a river.  Behind me a city burnt in the background and I felt a sense of urgency as we hauled our catch into port.  As we disembarked the boat we were met by a smart man in Nazi regalia flanked by soldiers, my dream self knew right away that they were SS.  The leader of this SS party spoke to us in German, yet my dream self understood what he was saying, my subconcious translating into English almost like a voice over.  The man accused us of being spies of the Motherland and said that we were to be executed.  We pleaded in Russian, which my dream self spoke, despite my waking self having no knowledge whatsoever of the Russian language.  We told this man we were merely fishermen bringing our catch to shore for the starving women and children.
The man did not believe us.  Instead he lined the 3 of us beside the dock and gave us the choice of being shot in the head or the chest.  At this point I was overcome with the most intense fear, knowing that I was going to die.  But then something strange happened.  My dream self, this Russian man that I was, suddenly knew that everything would be alright.  I knew I need not fear death because suddenly I knew that I would live again in a next life and be safe in my bed.  My dream self connected with the image of a young man in the future dreaming this dream and suddenly, I knew.  As this Russian awaiting death I knew that I would live on in a future incarnation and that I should not fear death as one day I'd be re-living this moment safe asleep in the body of a young man.  It felt literally as if I had dual consciousness for a moment.  In an instantce I was inhabiting two people, myself today and this Russian fisherman. My mind split apart into two seperate points of consciousness within two very different bodies.  It was very weird and very intense.  As a wave of peace washed over me I saw the SS soldier point his Mauser pistol at my forehead and then I woke up.
So, dream or genuine past life experience?  The only time I've had a dream this vivid since is when my dad came to visit me after he died.  Now, I believe that actually happened, due to my consciouss awareness in that dream, yet this past life dream felt more real than even that.
   I'd welcome thoughts and comments.
   Cheers... smiley

Your story was very interesting. I had the same question when I had a dream similar to this.

Like you, I had never had a dream where I was anyone but myself- until a few weeks ago. I was a female, early 20's, tall and thin with blonde hair. I lived on a farmhouse with a few other people who shared the house. (In my dream I was lucid, so it was kind of weird because I was controlling what I was doing) I was newly married, and was up in my room wondering where my husband was. I came back downstairs, and started reading the paper at the kitchen table. I saw the date of the newspaper, and it was sometime in the 1940's. The headline had to do something about the war going on. In my dream, all of the sudden I was overcome by sadness. I realized that my husband would not be coming home from war. Somehow I just knew. (he had been drafted I think) When I woke up, I still felt this overwhelming sense of sadness. It just felt so real.

I've read that our spirits remember our past lives. They are just so buried in our sub-conscious that we cannot access them through our regular memory. This is why some people suffer from unexplainable fears and phobias. It's their spirit remembering something from a past life. I think maybe we can learn what our past lives are through hypnosis, or perhaps dreams...anyways, I've always suffered from this horrible fear of losing my husband. I wonder if it is because in my life as the girl in the world war II era, I lost my husband in the war.

Anyways, thought I'd share my story. I'm not sure if I believe in reincarnation, but the dreams are pretty interesting!

I think this experience was definitely "genuine". Though in a sense, I think all of them are...

I recently had a life changing experience which pretty much filled in most of the gaps that have plagued me for so long.

so the past life thing definitely hits home for me...

However, I now get the feeling that we lead multiple lives. Maybe this was just you queing in on an "old" you, positioned somewhere else in space/time.

Or vice versa, for the russian?  wink
