So I've been reading a lot lately and have been ready to try an OBE when I find myself in the proper state. I call it the "aura" - when I feel awake but also sense what I used to call a hallucination coming on. I'm learning to control the experience and recently got the "vibrations" before learning what they were.
So anyway the other night I was feeling relaxed and even without the aura I had the vibrations. So then, slowly, I tried to lift up and wasn't sure if I was doing it right. My real muscles moved instead, so I said "oh well" and just lay back down. I think I fell asleep, but the next thing I remember I was trying again, this time being careful not to cause muscle movement. Finally I v-e-r-y slowly felt my head raise up until I was vertical. Like being in zero-gravity, almost. At the same time, I could faintly feel myself lying on my side. It was pretty cool!
I moved away from the bed a bit, and then for some reason lay back down on the floor at a 90-degree angle from my "real" position, and decided to push the mattress with my feet. Then it too floated up as if filled with helium! (was the mattress having an out-of-mattress experience?)

Then I saw through the door into my daughter's bedroom, but vaguely, and my memory becomes dim here. But before the dream ended an attractive blond man flew in and with an air of adventure I brought him down to the bed... and well, you know. That's something I've NEVER done in dreams before, and it was pretty similar to the real thing.

That's about all I remember and the next morning I was fairly sure it was "just a dream" albeit an almost-lucid one (since I was practicing what I intended to do). Or, it could be a foggy recollection of a real OBE.
Any insights on any of this? Do your first attempts seem like dreams afterward? I'm not complaining, mind you. A dream is probably much safer for me because I've kicked the wall and such acting out stuff while asleep (though not recently).
