why don't they just let us dream that were having verbal communication with them instead of giving us vague symbolism?

In most cases, we're doing the symbolizing, not them. We can't comprehend on a physical level what is being communicated and it gets filter it through our memories and concepts learned during physical life. We need something to relate it to.
