The mantra "om mani padme hum" doesn't translate very well. "Om" is a common word to start mantras with. In Hinduism it is a name of God. In Buddhism, it still seems to represent limitlessness. "Hum" is also commonly used. In Buddhism it takes what has come before it and integrates it with daily reality and limited appearances. "Mani" is jewel. "Padme" is lotus. The jewel in the lotus represents a combination of wisdom and compassionate activity. "Jewel Lotus" is a person's name. In Tibetan, Chenrezig. In Sanskrit, Avalokitesvara. "om mani padme hum" is the mantra of Chenrezig. It is also associated with a "seed syllable", "hrih". It is called the six syllable mantra, and each of the syllables has more than one association. This mantra works with the six perfections, the six realms (in Buddhism, all of samsara), six negative emotions, and six positive emotions.

Heya Felix, an easy and practically way of eliminating the problem with needing to gasp for air and/or getting tired, is to do mantra meditation mentally and not out loud... but then again, that you already knew..  do you feel you can induce some sort of trance easier when you are verbalizing the words out loud??  I actually havenīt tried that to any greater extent...  but Iīve heard of munks amongst others, who chant out different forms of mantra loud, to change their states of mind - and itīs very logical, after all - vibrations has the power to change awareness...  and sounds are vibrations..

   Be well //Qui-Gon

Hi mate!

Reciting a good mantra really works!
Itīs wery good for falling into trance- (or falling
unconsious if you donīt manage to squees in some
breathing.... lol! )

I actually think that it is esential to say the mantra out loud to get
a really good effect- but then again, itīs probably wery individual!

Hi all

Qui-Gon Jinn mentioned the effects of vibrations on awareness. Would you resonate the mantra in the same way words of power are vibrated in magick ritual? (sorry it’s just my familiar ground). If someone is not familiar with what I mean it is vibrating your words in a way that makes your whole body vibrate. This is done by experimenting with different vocal ranges and the angle of your head/neck. I imagine singers could do this more easily.

Best regards

David

hehe, i just had the mental image of someone walking along muttering Aum Mani Padme Hum.

Two weeks ago I would have thought you were insane.

Yeah ashfo, lol, you have a point there!
But, hey- Iīm not doing it anyway!

Or.. actually.. when out walking among people, itīs ok to
say the words quite inside. Thatīs what I do!

But hey, try it out on next time you go to the supermarket, and
se what effect you get! ( and,yes pleas, do speak the words
out loud!  better yet, vibrate the words through  the whole body, as if you where performing a pentagram ritaul!!)

Fenris, I really think that one shuld vibrate the words! It would be no point i just saying aum.. it has to be vibrated!  Other mantras are probably harder to vibrate.. like the hare krishna one..  so I guess it might be a case to case knid of thing!  ... or, no.. thinking about it, the hare krishna mantra should not be vibrated.. but recited pretty fast!

bless ya !

Has anybody tried mantra meditation?
I tried to sit and recite the Hare Krishna mantra ( hey, after al why not?- itīs a good mantra- and it really dosnīt matter..), but realised that I didnīt know WHEN to gasp for air..

Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare / Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare  (and it rimes.. itīs wery trance inducing..)

But when should one find the time to breath??

I have also played around with using a mantra while walking- it has pretty cool effects!
I used this classic one :
Aum Mani Padme Hum

This means something like - oh jewel in the lotus flower..
( if anybody has a word for word translation- pleas tell me!!)

It is pretty god to walk to, one word for eath step, and you get a nice four step cycle..

As always Iīd love to hear al yr opinions on this!!

Buenas noches!

Felix
