sponge action..

I'm a little confused about the whole of the limb or body part sponging action....

am I supposed to feel as if I have a sponge going through my limb, or am I supposed to feel as if it's going around my whole limb and 'water' dripping form the sides?

Brushing is on the outside, sponging is on the inside.  Don't worry about it being water, or light energy, or ball bearings, as long as you have something scrubbing from the inside.
