The word "chakra" can be translated as "wheel". The function of the chakras in the body is to take energy in, transform it, and send it out again. The main chakras can be compared to electrical transformers, which take alternating current of one voltage and send it out at another. There are Hindu and Buddhist yogas which use the chakra system. The Hindu system has seven main chakras which run from the perineum to the top of the head. The Buddhist system consolidates the main chakras to five. The Hindu system is more popular. There is a lot more material on it. It has even been extended to include "transpersonal" main chakras over the head. Some people add two or three chakras. Some systems say that there is an unlimited number of them extending to infinitely high levels. Then there are minor chakras. The palms of the hands contain chakras, and in systems such as reiki which guide energy through the hands they are not insignificant. There are hundreds of minor chakras. Every joint in the body has a chakra. The major chakras also have a system of minor chakras with each of them and the development of the main chakras can be slowed by having to wait for the minor chakras to catch up.

A nadi is like a nerve, but it is not physical. The nadis connect the chakras. Charts of then list different numbers, but 84,000 is a popular number. Of these, three are the most significant: shushumna, ida, and pingali. Kundalini, when dormant, closes off the opening at the bottom of shushumna. This is the central channel which runs next to the spine to the top of the head. Ida and pingali are to the sides of shushumna and are often described as circling it. You will find several different descriptions. In addition, you will read about knots along shushumna which block the flow of energy until they are released.

If at all possible, you should wait on writing that article until you have some more experience with your own chakras and channels. The reason why there is so much variation in what is on the web and in the books is that different systems exist based on the actual experiences of the people who described them. Some people have said that Robert Bruce just took material from yoga and chi kung and threw it together, but that is not true. Before he read about yoga and chi kung he observed his own energy structures and described them. He wrote about the methods he created to develop them. The fact that the results are so close in resemblence to yoga and chi kung is a good thing.

Umm okay got it. But please, could you rewrite the second paragraph in english!! Shushumna, nadi...I don't understand those non-english words!

Maybe, since I have to finish the article soon, I'll cut the part about chakras out of it and write a more detailed article on that much later.

Thanks for that!

Shushumna is the name of the central channel. Ida and pingali are the names of the channels which are on the sides of shushumna, the central channel. Depending on which system you use, the channels on the side of the central channel either cross it or go alongside it. One of the side channels is supposed to be associated with the sun and one with the moon. I keep forgetting which is which. The names of the nadis can't really be translated.

The Tibetan / Buddhist system is more complicated than the Hindu / Yogic one. In regard to something I saw in the "bogus techniques" section, I'd suggest looking up the secret, jewel chakra, and jewel tip chakras. Everything looks right, just not much detail. Are later revisions going to have more details?

Having done plenty of reading, mostly. I started reading about this sort of thing back in 1988. Getting things to work would be a nice change.

Hi.
I am busy writing an article for beginners on how to use energy. Within the article I have a short description of the etheric body and the chakra system. And here's where I got stuck.

I have been to many websites now, searching for information on the Chakra System. But none of the websites had the same information. It says in one of Robert Bruce's articles that there are at _least_ 7, but all these websites with no hard information leads me to believe that there is more than 7, possibly up to 10.

Would anybody please post the chakras here as a reply? Or could you possibly post a URL to a good website that tells you the chakras and/or shows you a chart?

Thanks
