Its binaural beats like hemi-sync or brain wave generator. It won't work correctly unless you are using stereo headphones because each ear is hearing a different frequency. Also keep in mind this technology does not induce OBE's it just helps you get in the right state of mind easier.

This is interesting, as the other commentors say, this is a mono audio track,

so the question is, how did they record the beats?

If you play the correct left and right frequencies, then the brain creates the beat.

If you slide the balance to the left you hear only one tone, and to the right, the other tone,
then balance in the center, the theory is that the beat is created in the brain.

Has anyone tried to record stereo bi-aural with a mono microphone?  If I can dig one up I'll try it   grin

If you mix stereo into mono, you are really adding the two channels together. So the result will be a sine wave with sine volume envelope ("beating") where the frequency of the volume envelope is F2-F1 (F2 - original left channel frequency, F1- original right channel frequency). Like this: http://www.picotech.com/experiments/sound_interference/graphics/frequency_image.gif

The resulting wave cannot be used for binaural audio, because the "trick" behind binaural beats is that they are mixed in the brain, creating the beating inside brain.
