I guess this Q would apply from any AP technique from an awake state as apposed to sleeping.

Please only answer this if your experienced in projection.

When I try and project I always have a nagging question in the back of my mind: "when will I know its time?" what I mean by this is when will I know its the right time to attempt to seperate. It nags me and disrupts my efforts and I am really not sure what to do about it.

I think a lot about "missing my que" and just don't know if I have to come to a point where I have to think myself "ok this is the time to project" I keep it in my mind otherwise I feel I may become too out of it in some sort of trance or medative state to think clearly and remember why I am doing this. It would be better if I will just do it on my own accord without even thinking but I feel that way is less likely.

For anyone who does answer can you please also state clearly what you usually feel when the time is right to seperate?

Mental "nagging" is going to keep you from going deep enough. Go as deep as you can without completely falling asleep. Just let go and relax into it. For me a sure sign is a definite shift in consciousness... I don't experience myself as I am in physical consciousness, it's very definite like flipping a light switch. It's hard to explain, but you know it when it happens. Don't wait for it and wonder when it will happen, it will happen when you put yourself in the correct state. It's a delicate balancing act.

Also, to keep yourself from the nagging, use some sort of technique, like a rundown or noticing, or any AP technique that appeals to you. It'll keep your mind focused on the task at hand. You need to be in the moment.

So you think you'll be unconscious and in another mindstate then you'll suddenly be conscious enough to seperate?

Hi Gummage,
Try this:-
Do nothing for five days/ nights in trying. Get as much quality sleep as you can during this time. Absolutely NO attempts at all.
The hard bit, each morning when you start to wake up stay absolutely still and dont move a thing physically. Learn to do this all the time making yourself  more aware of where you are, half awake, half asleep but concious and aware. This is what you need to master.
You will see or hear things in this state just ignore it. When you're aware all you need to do is think of a nice location where you feel safe and really imagine you are there. Keep this in your mind, you WILL go there and nothing is going to stop you. The opening for this happens most mornings but lasts only a few seconds. The moment you get awareness GO TO THE PLACE.  You will feel the movements of travelling or you may just know you are there.
Its easy in words but getting proficient at the awareness without any movement is tricky to say the least.
Stay calm and do this as its a natural thing to do. Don't think too much about how you're going to do it just make it natural. Its like riding a bicycle, one learned its easy.
This is one of the easiest ways to get out, the timing is critical and it can work in a few attempts. Days rather than years in nearly half of those really wanting this more than anything.

The right time is a bit other than you may think. The right time is, if EVERY physical sensation of the body is gone. You will loose the control over the breathing, and every feeling of the body. Then is time to start.

The best method is to imagine first the movements. The astral body will begin to follow these imaginations soon. At the first attempts will these sudden occuring easy movements maybe stop your movement attemt due the emotion change. But after you became familar with this sudden starting movements, you'll got an secure way to detect and use the separating phase.

You don't want to be unconscious at all, you will 'all of a sudden' be consciousness itself.  Anyway, it's a way to describe it.
For me, when I can see through my eyelids or the vision screens slow down enough for me to merge, I know I can either 'go into' it or separate, using a technique, or just by initiating movement of my energy body.
