suppose one was so good at astral projection that he was able to control it 100%, could they technical never come out?  They simply never wanted to come out?  The real world is so harsh compared to the astral plane... why would you want to leave?

Robert Bruce said that the body will end a projection when its needs become strong enough and that this is the only way to end a higher level projection. He described going up to the atmic level, well above the astral and mental planes. He did not want it to end and could not have chosen to end his projection, but his body brought him back.

You might work hard for many years and get the ability to stay out forever if you're lucky, but whats the point? {***EDIT***}

Somebody edited my post, and I dont think they should have. I was only saying the obvious alternative way to get a permanent astral projection, which is easier to do and has the same result. As the above text is now, it loses all meaning.

I imagine that would get pretty ugly.  Especially if other people got wind of it.  Your body would be put on life support probably.  Unless you took it out into a cave in the desert or something.  It would be hard not to have compassion for it, suffering and dying.  That compassion alone would probably be enough to find yourself back in it.  Well, you hear tales of Indian gurus who just sit in lotus posture and leave and don't come back.  Eventually their body dies.  So I suppose it's possible.  I also prefer the astral to the physical, except that the physical is the locale of people I love and can't leave unless I have to. Also, and this is unprovable, but it's possible we have these bodies for reasons not always apparent to us.  Once on the astral, there was a sort of committee, for lack of a better word, that was discussing my case, and I woke up, and then after I woke up, I heard one of the women say, clear as a bell, on the physical level mind you!, "She has to learn to live to infinity in the world".  So, based on that (not very scientific!) evidence, taking matters into our own hands as far as death goes.......I dunno.  Might be a mistake.  You might find yourself back in a body even less to your liking faster than you can say boo, for that matter.

There is no good reason to stay in the astral realms.  You chose to experience the physical world here and the journeying in the astral and above is for you to Remember who and what you are, not to avoid the life you chose to live here.

Don't know why RB had trouble returning from his Atmic journey.  I have never had a problem with returning from any level/layer, so I would possibly think it was more about RB's wanting to stay that caused the apparent problem.

While it is true that our body will send a shock along the silver cord to reel us back in when the body is alarmed or in need of moving, etc, it is not the controller of our Journeys.  This indicates that the physical body is where we are meant to be most of the time, as it is our vessel for earthly experiences...  which is what we are here for.

Theres lots of things in my physical life that I didnt choose... getting cavities, getting caught by the police, etc. Extending that to astral, I probably didnt choose a lot of the stuff that happens there either. I could be in this body by pure accident. I'll not act like I chose it until I remember such choosing.

Actually the simple answer is no.  Basically, you need to generate enough energy to permanently stay in the astral and that's simply not possible given that you have a physical body to energize as well.

It's defiantly hard.  But I'm not convinced that it's even possible.  it's kind'a like requiring your body to be awake for one full week straight; or even worst, to stay awake for infinity.  It's a mater of energy balance

Forceful Projection to a New Residence
http://search.barnesandnoble.com/booksearch/isbninquiry.asp?ISBN=1559390581&pdf=y
About choosing your next rebirth thru a type of OBE, known as forceful
projection, if the body you have now is undesireable or in a weakened condition you can apply this. Another benefit is that you can pick a better future life.

An extension of one of
THE SIX YOGAS OF NAROPA

1. Yoga of Psychic Heat, better known as Tumo. The foundation and ongoing support of the Path of Means, Tumo is the only one of the Six Yogas which is practiced throughout its entirety. It depends on the absolute retention of generative fluids -- sexual, endocrinological, and psychic -- for the conscious redirection and transmutation of subtle energies for spiritual purposes. In its most subtle and transcendent form, Tumo is known as the primordial energy at the very core of all manifestation.

2. Yoga of the Illusory Body. This practice begins as a powerful psychological technique. Through studying his mirror reflection and then visualized images of his own body, the aspirant comes to understand the arbitrary and illusory nature of perception. Next, he projects all his subliminal self-imagery, positive and negative, onto this image and thus disentangles himself from the web of identification with these things. Then he visualizes his Yidam, his personal Patron Buddha, and identifies his consciousness with it. He must transform his mundane life into the archetypal realm or body of the Buddha: his friends become Bodhisattvas, the outer world becomes a Mandala, and all incidents resonate with the Self-Illuminating Void.

3. Yoga of the Dream State. By maintaining waking consciousness during the nocturnal dream state, the yogi comes to realize the equally illusory nature of both the waking and dreaming conditions. Not only must he remain conscious while asleep, but he must also learn to dictate the incidents of his dreams, eventually performing heroic magical feats in his dreams. Through this practice the psyche is purged of many of its habitual limited assumptions about the nature of the manifest worlds.

4. Yoga of the Clear Light. According to the Tantric tradition, everyone experiences the Clear Light of the Void shortly after death. Its brilliance, however, is so overwhelming that the departing consciousness usually recoils in fear and is drawn instead into another samsaric rebirth. By learning to recognize the transcendent Light of the Nirvanic Buddha Consciousness during his lifetime, an adept may return to it without difficulty when the shock of death threatens to disorient him.

5. Yoga of the Bardo. The Bardo is the "nowhere" realm between death and rebirth. It is also the "nowhere" of the present moment. Whichever way you look at it, this yoga confronts the adept with his own naked and unmodified karmas. If he has not been sufficiently strengthened by his previous sadhana, he may easily become entangled in this display and fall into a realm corresponding to some aspect of his own karmic destiny.

6. Yoga of Consciousness Transference. Mastery of this yoga enables the adept to direct his consciousness at death through an aperture in the crown of the head to a chosen incarnation or a realm of light. This is his means of transcending the mechanics of karma and rebirth when he dies. The most desirable realm, of course, is the Dharmata, the Buddha realm of pure luminosity, the transcendent Light of Buddha Consciousness.

Hi Beavis,
Really ?  Are you sure you had no part in choosing the getting of cavities and the being caught by police ?

Surely the events that led up to each of those things was brought about by the choices you made in your life.   Think about it.  Why would the police catch you if there was nothing to be caught for, except perhaps for a mis-indentification..  which is easily sorted.

You know there are no such things as Accidents.

Love Always.

I agree =).  As a mathematician, I can also asses that there is no such thing as "luck" or randomness.  It's just one damn complex equation.

I think bodidharma of shaolin temple was capable
of astral projecting forever, I think he died trying
but im not sure. buddha was able to do anything he wished the astral realm was as easy to into and out of for
him as finding the bathroom ten feet away.

Once I simply found that all I could do was tend to my physical body until I could return to it. I found it was as if I was a parent suffering bedside to the death of a child. Given that I accept there is a value unknown but profound to stay.

I said there are lots of things I didnt choose. If that was not true, I must choose most things.

If you were flying in a plane over a desert, had no parachutes, and a wing broke off, you could "choose" to crash in the plane or to jump out. You cant choose not to die.

For every choice you can tell me I have, I can think of at least 1 similar thing I cant choose. Therefore, there are lots of things I dont choose.

Whats this, an ACCIDENT?

Even if my actions affect everything that happens to me so I do choose most things, I dont know what my actions will cause, so I'm rolling dice instead of choosing. I dont assume things happen for a reason. I think I fell down to this planet because I accidentally flew too close to a huge group of colored lights.

LOL Beavis.  Thanks for the laugh.

But, you did choose to get on that plane, when you could have chosen not to.

I had a lot of trouble with what seemed like things I could not choose.  It P**sed me off no end I can tell you.  Then one day I finally got an insight into it...  when planning out this life and choosing all the billions of choices I wanted to have in order to experience certain things within a life-framework, there were some choices I did not include for this life...  and it was these that I wanted desperately to be able to have the choice of.  That was a long sentence..  shocked

Ahh, but you chose to roll those dice anyway Beavis.  We set things in motion with our choices, we could choose not to roll the dice and do something else instead.  Even then we would have set something else in motion, it's just Karma Mechanics 101, LOL

The biggest trick is to consider what our actions will set in motion, and then to choose according to what we think that could be.  Unfortunately, we aren't aware that in every second we are making Choices this way or that, and most of them are made without giving it a real thought.  Many are snap decisions like this, forced by time and apparent circumstances.

Time out every day to look back over our actions will steadily help us to begin thinking in the moment as we see the flow of the motions we set into action, and their inevitable conclusions

Accident is a terribly judgmental word to use.   I just meant that things don't happen,  for no reason.
