Why isn't anything done about the massive spam attacks (such as now, recently)?

Many other forums have rules in place for e.g. new registrations and their first posts being restricted or moderated? This seems to work.

Why isn't anything tried here? I'm no expert but it shouldn't be too difficult.

Maybe it's xanth making lots of accounts and spamming so we all go to his forum instead?

hehe... why didn't I think of that?!

Speaking seriously for a second...
I've been in contact with Adrian quite a bit the last few days.  He stopped by a couple days ago and increased the anti-spam registration stuff to the max.  It's not working.

The problem with the anti-spam stuff is that it gets beaten so quickly now-a-days.

I think the only TRUE way to beat it is to set the registration to require an admin or moderator to manually activate the account.  But with the number of subscribers per day to the Pulse, that would be almost impossible to handle.

There's also an issue that the forum software running right now is really out of date.  Any NEW anti-spam measures would require the database to get converted to a new forum to work with what ever new software Adrian decided to load up on it.  That's extremely time consuming and not to mention dangerous for the data... we could end up losing bits, pieces or the whole sha-bang.  It's a difficult decision Adrian has to make.

Ignoring the spam is no problem but it sucks when the server is overwhelmed. Adrian will do what's best, I'm sure. Is he having a problem on his other forum as well?
It ain't what you don't know that gets you into trouble. It's what you know for sure that just ain't so.

I think it's ip targeted.
His Our forum seems fine,  but I could be wrong.

I think you should at least restrict the first post of new members to a moderators approval. Excluding the spams I don't think there are that many first posts everyday.

Why not use forbidden words?Like lottery, cialis, viagra etc?So any post with those words will be deleted without being posted and even without warning?
Who am I is not important...My message is...

Because it's not that easy.
You don't want to ban words in which people might legitimately use one day.

I promise I will now and in future never want to legitimately or purposefully use the word (except for this one time here) "michael kors" anywhere here or elsewhere. Thus a ban for this word would already be a start, right?   :|

Stillwater

What if I told you... I am... Michael Kors?

And my middle name is Cialis fyi.

Also, I don't know that the word filter works that way... as far as I know, its efficacy extends to, and stops at substituting banned words for others; I don't know that this forum software allows for topic blocking on parameters like that.
