Title: Aliens and light speed
Post by: Kirkland on September 29, 2012, 11:06:59
So I was reading an article on the Hubble and the eXtreme Deep Field image. According to the article it takes 13.7 billion years for the light from the galaxy they decided to image to get here that is just 460 million years after when the big bang is thought to of occurred. So it got me wondering maybe the reason we haven't seen any life yet is because of the fact that we are basically looking at a historic universe when we take these images.

Put it this way if we were in the galaxy that Hubble was taking the picture of then the people operating Hubble would see earth 13.7 billion years ago.  That would mean there would be no life on the planet and the planet would probably of been hostile to life at the time.

So maybe the reason we have not found life apart from our planet is because we are constantly looking at a past universe.

Hi,
If intelligent life does exist then c wouldn't be a problem. They'd generate a local universe to their ship which would enable them to travel in its own space and time.
Theoretically they could make manoeuvres at 90ยค instantly at incredible speeds if viewed outside their locale.
Another point would be they would get to a destination before light had a chance to get there. At this destination no-one would have had anything indicating their existence if they come from afar.
We have been visited before Im sure.
Seeing isn't everything.

I honestly think they have that wrong. I can't explain it but I feel the science just is not quite right on this subject. Kind of the way I felt when they first started putting so much faith in carbon dating.

I guess it also depends on how hard it is to colonize and exploit space on a galactic scale.

If it turns out that is very easy for us, like folks like Kurzweil seem to think, it probably indicates our galaxy is completely empty of any other civilizations, or someone would have already converted the entire galaxy to computing substrata or whatever use they decided a billion years back. The harder we find interstellar exploitation of resources within a 1000 years from now, the more likely there are to be other civs lol.
