I have been having off and on projections since June of 2000. I can tell you that labels are necessary for people who have different types of projections. For example, I have different experiences based on the projection exit location. Read some of Robert Crookhall's projection research books that interviews many people and writes down their experiences. They are not always the same experiences. If you read them closely, you will also see the projection experience is based on the the technique used and in certain cases the exit location. The following types of questions do need answers to them.

Why does the rollout technique always lead to a dreamlike OBE with many reality fluctuations? I have never read any case nor experienced any that did not follow this rule.
Why when you exit through the top of the head you have no reality fluctuations and no dreamlike qualities?
Why when you do the rope technique or any technique that causes you to lift up, you experience some sort of vibrations?
Why when you exit from below, you go into a deep sleep with no remembrance?
Why when you focus on the third eye or blackness in front of the eyes, you end up with some sort of conscious phasing experience?
Why is it when you project inside of a dream, you feel your sense of non-physical sight become "more alive".

There are probably many more questions like the above that I do not know about yet. Now if you only experienced one type of projection, then I can see why you don't believe in labels. But I have experienced all of the above, and there are clear differences between them.

This technique is taken from "A Treatise of White Magic" by Alice Bailey.

Learn, as you go to sleep, to withdraw all of your consciousness to the center of the top of the head. This should be practiced as a definite exercise as one falls to sleep. One should not permit oneself to drift off to sleep, but should endeavor to preserve the consciousness intact until there is a conscious passing out onto the astral plane. Relaxation, close attention, and a steady drawing upwards to the center in the head should be attempted, for until the aspirant has learned to be steadily aware of all processes in going to sleep and to preserve at the same time his positivity, there is danger in this work. The first steps must be taken with intelligence and followed for many years until facility in the work of abstraction is achieved.

Record and watch all phenomena connected with the withdrawing process, whether followed in the meditation work or in going to sleep. It will be found, for instance, that many people wake with an almost painful start just as they have dropped asleep. This is due to the slipping out of the consciousness through a web which is not adequately clear and through an orifice at the top of the head (anterior fontanelle) which is partially closed. Others may hear an intensely loud snap in the region of the head. This is caused by the vital airs in the head of which we are not usually aware and is produced by an inner aural sensitivity which causes awareness of sounds always present but not usually registered. Others will see light as they fall asleep, or clouds of color, or banners and streamers of violet, all of which are etheric phenomena. These phenomena which are of no real moment, are all related to the vital body, to pranic emanations, and to the web of light.


I have had four OBE's in a week by doing this technique. With this technique, you can tell the moment you are out of body since you start to lose your sense of hearing and I can hear my fan in my bedroom go softer and softer until I can't hear it anymore. If anyone tries this technique, please let me know of your results with it.

I am starting back in with projections after a long time. I decided to try another technique that I read about recently. It was very successful this morning. I would lay on my back and touch my thumb and index fingers together for both hands while my body falls asleep. Once I feel the two fingers not touching anymore, then I know that my awareness is leaving the body. If I bring my awareness back to my body, then I can feel the two fingers touching again. I did it numerous times last night with great success.

I am going to try it everyday to try to gain consistency with the technique and find great ways to create full projections with it. I will report my findings in my journal here. Hopefully it will help others achieve success also.

Here is the technique in detail:
While you are laying on your back, touch your thumb and first finger together at the pads and have both hands resting by your sides. Do this with both hands while you are laying on your back. When a projection is first coming on you will not feel your fingers touching anymore. They actually are still touching, but you will not feel it. This is the very beginning of separation.

I would like input of what type of projections are possible. Here is my list and how I achieve them.

Out of body experience (external awareness) = obtained only by separation of my non-physical feet upwards then the rest of the non-physical body follows. Sometimes my non-physical head region gets stuck with my non-physical legs lifted high in the air.

Astral projection, lucid dream, phasing (internal awareness) = obtained by focusing on the third eye region of the head to project.

I am happy you had success. With strong vibrations, you can almost guarantee an obe as long as you time the separation right. I have had obe's for a few years, and all have started from strong vibrations except one.

Instead of fear, why don't you utilize your talent and do validation experiments like reading a three digit number while out of body. Can you explain how you have an obe in more detail, since we all would like a great obe technique? Do you get the vibrations before the obe?

Your initial separation was an OBE, but then it turned into a lucid dream. This happens very frequently. There are tips that may possibly help you. Try to remain motionless after separating a few inches or a few feet. Motion seems to cause the OBE to turn into a dream. This is why most lucid dreams involve motion.

Becoming a bird means the obe turned into a dream and came from your mind.

Really it's not complicated at all. If you can feel your awareness outside your body, then it is an OBE. All other experiences are AP's and LD's.

OBE's are different than AP's. An obe contains that peculiar sense of awareness that you are separated from your body. An AP or a lucid dream you are focused on levels of consciousness, aka IBE inner body experience.

I sometimes hear a distinct wind sound. Then I can't hear anything even though I still am conscious. When I can't hear anything at all, then I know I am out of body with my mind.

I tend to disagree. I've had experiences that have been validated by my bed mate to be an exterior experience.

Permanently Grounded has brought up some good points. Just like permanently grounded, I've had one projection that was so real that I knew without a doubt this was an out of body experience. This was my first projection. Ever since then, my projections have involved some dreamlike qualities. So I agree, I have seen very few posts by forum members that match my first projection.

I have found that if you hear no sound but you are consciously aware, then you are projected. I have never been projected and could hear environmental sounds.

I found most projection techniques focus on the head region which for me leads to a lucid dream or mind chatter. I then switched to focusing on my feet during the projection attempt. All of a sudden, my success has increased with no more lucid dreams and I am having out of body experiences, but I am projected only a very short distance from the body. But, that is good enough for me. Now every time I try to talk while out of body, my bed mate can hear distorted sounds or heavy breathing, so I know I am in the real time zone and my physical body is reacting.

Maybe each of us has a different exit point to leave our physical body. Some might exit through the feet, some use the head region, for example.

I get very similar results with my projections also. If there are vibrations in my feet, I almost always have a real time projection. If I get vibrations in my head, I have always had a lucid dream, except just one time.

The only fear in projection comes from the sleep paralysis stage. After that you are free.
