I think the spirit originates from a very high dimensional level, from the higher self. You could say that a spirit is cast down into the physical universe, and that a kind of silver cord connects it to its higher self. It is held within the confines of the physical body, and within the etheric/energy body, while the body lives. When the physical body dies, the etheric/energy body slowly evaporates until it is gone. Once the etheric/energy body is completely gone, the spirit passes through what some call the 'second' death, where it moves away from the physical dimension into one of the heavens or spirit worlds.
However, the above process can transpire in many ways, depending on the manner of death, and on the spiritual advancement of the spirit concerned. Some spirits move straight into the heavens, and some undergo a more complex and staggered afterlife process.
