The important point here, is what they all taught.

in numerology when all the numbers are added:
2+1+8+6=17=1+7=8

keyword for 8: power, organization, enterprise, control

1013=5

keyword for 5:  uncertainty, realignment, flux, change

In symbolism:

5 means Man, health and love, and of the quintessence acting upon matter.

8 is associated with the two interlcing serpents of the caduceus, signifying the balancing out of opposing forces or the equivalence of the spiritual power to the natural.

after their Golden age they started practicing human sacrifice- a view that is not the official version- any scholar will tell you they didn't, (and I know this, since I studied anthropology in college umpteen million years ago) that the only civilizations that practiced ritual sacrifice were the Aztecs- but they have uncovered a lot of evidence that the Mayas did practice it, and when they ran out of prisoners to sacrifice, they turned to their own, and the rest is history, (or prehistory, depending who you talk to.)  Once again, this in not the official unglamorous story, but the evidence strongly points to this.

The difference between the Mayans sacrifice and the Aztecs, the Aztecs sacrifice their own people.  The Aztecs had a distorted version of what sacrifice really meant, that is coming from the teachings--passed on.    As many know, the Aztecs aren't the original builders of the Pyramids in Mexico.

the mayans beleived in a prohpecy that said that their civilization would come to an end by the coming of some sort of demon from unknown lands.  

this is only an interpretation of what i've come acrross so far about the mayans history. and i find that the knowledge they left is far more usefull and important to us today rather than how they died or dissappeared.

So how were they able to prophesy the future?

I would say, foretelling the future was and is part of that knowledge.
