Weird Symbols/Signs I saw

Normally when i'm laying down in my bed i'm doing one of four things:

1. Trying to project or have an OBE
2. Think about life or what my plans are for the week with my eyes open/closed
3. Not really think at all and meditate
or most importantly
4. Try to sleep!!

Now the other night I was mainly just resting and thinking to myself in a somewhat concious state.(I was more tired than normal and dont think i had total control of what I was doing. Aka drifting off into sleep)

Anyways, about 5-10 minutes after resting with my eyes closed, I found myself staring right into a 8X8 projected sheet of symbols.(Hireoglyphicesqe) Mainly different types of lines and letters. And each symbol was a little bit bigger than the size of a baseball and had a brown color to them.

Now, I have no idea what this means or how i saw them. Or if it was just my imagination. I definitly  saw it with eyelids close and through the minds eye and the background color was about the same as it was with eyes open(I Did this at 530am so my room was dark but not to the point where I couldnt see anything) Also, after i was staring at these symbols i kinda open my eyes involuntarily/instinctvly and they were gone

All kinda weird too me. Anyone have any ideas on what happened or what i "saw" or have a similiar experience??

Did the symbols look as real as if your eyes were open? I sometimes have a similar thing, but it's like a book is held in front of my eyes. If I remember what was written down, it is usually nonsence (Strings of mist-matching words).
I think this is a form of hypnogogic hallucination, but a very focused one. From my own experience, the 'astral sight' people talk about when they seem to see through their eyelids is the same thing (I have this too and it feels exactly the same as the book situation to me).

It was fairly clear but it was more projected if anything. Like the image seemed about 10f or so away. It may have been astral sight though. Ive had it one other time before when i could basically see my room in a bluish/purplish color. But this just seemed different since there was all these symbols/letters/etc. Think i'll look into it more

I have seen a strange alphabet a couple of times, in glowing red letters.  This occurred, one time, when I thought I was simply lying in bed but in fact was out of body (I discovered I was out of body because I reached out and touched my bedroom door with my hand without moving and it is several metres away physically).  This strange set of red symbols slowly emerged into view and stayed there for a little while.

Similar symbols appeared once when I was in a very relaxed state in bed.

That occurred a couple of years ago and I've never been able to work out what they were.   :confused:

I've been doing more research on it and for both of us it may be a form of hypnogogic imagry. Although I dont know much on the subject so i'm not too sure.

I get a very similar thing on the way out of a good lucid dream. Before I fully wake up, I almost always get this flat 'board' in front of me, seems about 2ft from my eyes. It's always a chequered pattern, like wallpaper and extends apparently infinitely in all directions. It's pin-sharp in detail and usually monotone but the hue varies, I've not seen any writing yet. I found I can will my viewpoint around but nothing much changes as far as the detail is concerned, once I saw a 'rip' with light behind. It lasts about 15-20 seconds before going blurry then I'm awake. I wonder if it's anything like the astral plane entry portals Robert Bruce shows on the rear cover of Astral Dynamics ? Could be I'm way far out like miles not 2ft, which is why it only looks like wallpaper.
