Sounds just like a device made in the 80's by a Dr.(can't recall who ) called "the God helmet", which was a modified motorcycle helmet with electrodes mounted in it, acting directly on the right temporal lobe, which proported to induce trance like states and spiritual visions.

Olaf Blanke in Switzerland found that it is possible to reliably elicit experiences somewhat 'similar' to the OOBE by stimulating regions of the brain called the right temporal-parietal junction with electrical stimulation.

It's Dr Michael Persinger who designed and labelled his contraption "the God Helmet" (Koren Helmet).

Imagine relaxing with that crap on your head.

Like Olaf Blanke, Persinger used mechanical induction upon the brain, and while creating interesting results where the spaciality and self are processed within the brain (right temporal-parietal junction), they don't explain the ability for unassisted induction nor the full range of other sensations experienced during OOBEs.

They couldn't because they didn't know enough (and they still don't.)  But the modern medical explanation for any type of out of body experience (be it memory immersion, out of body experience of any kind, autoscopy and even deja vu) is now explained by science as 'spontaneous temporal lobe seizures', which are conveniently used to explain any immersive experience.  It's convenient because even if they don't observe it happening in an experiencer, they say that it happened before they tested for it.
In other words, it's just a convenient excuse to explain away phenomena without any actual testing.

I toatally agree... the Ehrsson study was the same in terms of it's one sided approach - that to simulate OOBEs rather than actually use paople like to to 'generate' an OOBE.

when I saw the thread I was thinking shaak-ti from starwars lol. reading a starwars novel (2 actually) right now. THERE IS NO DEATH, THERE IS ONLY THE FORCE!

force lore is a lot deeper and more realistic than you'd think
