So based on what I've learned, a trance occurs when your mind is awake and your body falls asleep.  But, as I'm sure many other people have experienced, some times you get into a trance when you're fully awake.  For example, I was walking around my house and sat down - and Bam I felt a trance come over me.  Obviously my body isn't asleep so how does that happen?  Is a trance just a symptom of deep relaxation whereas sleep paralysis is what defines mind awake body asleep??

A trance is that your mind is fully focused on something, if you're going for a spiritual trance it means to have a constant flow of energy/relaxation, as if you would always be focused.
It's a feeling but it's a feeling of complete awareness.

Edit: it can be any kind of trance really, even someone in a bar for example, he drank a few beers and he feel relaxed then hear is song and go dance on the dance floor with a ton of people.
Or a rave or anything really, music helps a lot with that.
The partial becomes complete; the crooked, straight; the empty,
full; the worn out, new. He whose (desires) are few gets them; he
whose (desires) are many goes astray.

The type of trance for this sort of thing is slightly different for me than a light meditation trance and took quite a bit of practice to learn it. I have to drop down til my body goes numb. It feels like it's made of wood and not part of me like when something gets numb from going to sleep. I push my mind deep within me then am in that other place. It took a year to learn this. It's also used for mediumship which is what I use it for most, but its the same as the phasing/ projection trance. If you have trouble " leaving" just go within. It sounds confusing at first but once it happens you'll get how it works... your not leaving your body but your " body" is not limited to physical space. The direction of the drop is initially straight down then toward the tail bon

Thanks I had no idea there were different types of trances  :-)

I take the same point there - different types of trances.  But body feeling numb and wood-like?  What makes that different than sleep paralysis?  If your body feels like wood, can you still move if you wish to do so?

My teaching and belief here is a bit different than mainstream which I hope adds to the diversity and interest of the site.
The trance as I was taught and described here is a controllable state. I can get into it at any time as long as my focus is adequate. Sleep paralysis is a state where my alertness is actually not very good. I'm dopey from sleep, my mental clairty is poor and I loose focus when trying to do something from that state. It's close to the right state but not the same. I find it difficult to get into the right state from a sleep paralysis because when I wake up I usually need to shift position. back and hip pain usually hit if I don't.

The trance I'm fully awake and aware of my surroundings, even though I'm not focused on them. Everything that happens in trance is focused deliberate and controlled.

Sleep paralysis is a naturally occuring state. Trance has to be learned.  In my case I tried the methods listed on this site and didn't have much luck with them I contacted a spirit who set me up with a guide. The initial stages the guide actually helped me induce the state. If he wants a new componant to it then he guides me from inside.
It's a state that I don't often sit in alone I'm usually with someone or wanting to talk to someone.
To me now that I've learned this. The uncontrolled states are of little interest. I don't use any exit technique I go within.
It's a skill that has to be mastered.
