Don't be discouraged.  Almost all of my OBE's happen after I've already fallen asleep.  Either I realize I'm dreaming and project from there, or my consciousness snaps back to my bedroom (without my body awakening) and I project from there.

The key to gaining lucidity in your dreams is to stare at something.  If you can consciously stare at something while dreaming (whether it be a watch, a book, a car, etc), you'll start to gain incredible clarity and awareness.  THe key, of course, is remembering to stare at something in the first place!

What many people do is give regular affirmations all throughout the day.  For example, they may touch a solid object every hour to see if they can pass through it, saying to themselves, "Am I dreaming?"  Pretty soon, this carries over into your subconscious mind, and you find yourself doing this in your dream.  You can use it as a gateway to becoming lucid.

Personally, what I do is practice maintaining awareness as I lay down at night.  I keep my intent in the forefront of my mind.  That way, if I drift off to sleep, there is a good chance that I'll 'remember' sometime during the night, and start to project.

Best of luck.

I think it is pretty common for people to project after falling asleep-I think it would probably be more than half the people that post here. The main thing is to try to be aware, whether in a lucid dream or obe.

In the world in general and in this nation
May not even the names disease, famine, war, and suffering be heard.
May virtuous qualities, merit, and prosperity greatly increase
And may continuous good fortune and subline well-being perfectly arise.

Hello birdboy,

This is extremely common. Most people project first within their dreams, and are only able to get there thru meditation after tons and tons of projections. I'm still in the stage where my projections come through dreams.

Ditto on the staring technique.

Hi Birdboy
I`ve only been able to project from dreams. It`s frustrating because I have yet to find a consistent method to become lucid. The experiences come in bunches followed by periods of drought. I`m working on the phasing approach and am beginning to see a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel. I`m just following the good advice I`ve been getting on this site. There are some pretty experienced travellers floating around here.

hello fellow astrals!
I bought Robert Bruce's book a few years ago and used to practice NEW nightly. I got good results with the energy movements and relaxation, and a few close ones where I almost got out of the physical frame. But I never did get out of my body...

But one night, I had accidental luck...
As I slept, I suddenly became fully conscious inside my dreams. The dream dissolved. I became aware of my physical frame sleeping softly, and I was a little point inside it. Suddenly I began peeling away from the physical frame and soon I was floating beautifully above the body. I looked around and saw a vast expanse of blacks and blues, and many points of light that looked like stars. I realized I was finally astral projecting and felt so happy and free from my physical ego. I had discovered a new aspect of myself that was many times freer than my 'self' inside the body. Anyway, as I realized I was astrally projecting, I immediately became aware of my physical body again and entered back into it---but I saw my smiling physical face right before I went in. Once I got back in, I opened my eyes and was staring at the ceiling. I tried to get out again but with no luck.

So I guess the point of this thread is: Whenever I've tried to relax the body, staying awake, and try to get out, I never have luck---my body always gets stiff and my eyes flutter when I'm just about to get out, and this brings me back to full physical body consciousness, which is a big bummer, especially after having spent 20 minutes relaxing and preparing for exit. But the one time I did have an astral projection, my body was already fully asleep, because I had woke up inside my dreams. I wish I could develop this skill of waking up inside dreams, because then I could skip the relaxing  process, or just go to sleep in order to relax.

does anyone have a tip for me.? I would really love to be able to astral project because it seems to give a great perspective on life and makes life here on earth easier to live...
thanks!
