Is there a best sleeping position to go to bed in to increase your chances of waking up in SP? my dad told me he gets sleep paralysis whenever he sleeps on his back.

You think sleeping on ones back would increase SP chances? thx.

I always sleep on my back and never had SP before.

If I'm not laying on my back, chances are I'm falling deep asleep in 5 minutes (unless I'm sitting, of course). All my progress in meditation / energy work has been done while laying on my back. I never projected nor experienced SP.

Some people never experience sleep paralysis, but that doesn't keep them from projecting.

You meditate on your back? you can do that? I never thought anyone could meditate on their back.

I have stayed in trance mediation for over an hour while laying on my back.

It goes just as attempts to AP before sleep do, you lay on your back and try to be as confortable as possible (I tilt my head to the side so that I don't snore/choke with my own tongue).

I've had some issues with finding a good position, though. While on my back, when I tilt my head, it feels there is some tension on my neck on the opposite side to the tilting (the stretched side) and, if I'm wearing headphones, the tilted-side one is smashed into my ear. If I don't tilt my head, I can't breath confortably when 100% relaxed (tongue falls to the back of my throat).

When practicing while sitting, I feel that when I let go off my jaw, it just falls down. It feels too weird.

I find this is the *most* difficult aspect of meditating. Finding a 100% relaxing and 100% confortable position is extremely hard to do, and it's not about just laying down or sitting, it's about the very little things such as our tongues and jaws positions.

In his book Astral Dynamics, Robert Bruce said he has only astral projected while laying down.

I'm also reading Astral Dynamics and Robert Bruce said it is easier to get SP and OBE's while lying on the back.
First and only (classic) OBE so far: 12th August 2009
LDs: Once per week :)

Me too, I can never get comfortable, or relax, I toss and turn.  My muscles are always tight and I'm always tense.  Alcohol is out of the quiestion, lol.  Therefore the only way that works for me to get my body relaxed is to meditate in the morning after waking up.  My body has been laying still long enough and numb from the pain on the pressure points. :-P

Try practicing martial arts or aerobics and then flex all of your muscles for awhile.

I get sleep paralysis from lying on my back, but also from lying on my side. I don't lie on my stomach so I can't make a comment on that. I've found both the back and the side to be equally effective though.

So I don't get it... When you get sleep paralysis you are paralyzed and unable to move?  :?

From what I understand, sleep paralysis is a state that is ideal for an OOBE. Your body is asleep (more accurately, the part of your mind that controls your body), but your mind is still focused and awake. I believe this is the state you enter after the 'vibrations' stop. The 'vibrations' that people report seems to be when your body is falling asleep, although I have never been 'stuck' in the sleep paralysis stage.

For people who have experienced sleep paralysis, it is often a fearful experience because they are awake and wish to move but are unable. This often encourages paranoid thoughts such as "what if someone broke into my house?", "what if there was a fire?" etc.

kurtykurt42

It may be the ideal state for your body but it doesn't sound like fun to me. I like to be able to move just case there is a fire!  :-D

My aunt has had SP many times and she described that you are unable to move no matter how hard you try, similar to some of those alien abductions. Where the little gray guys surround your bed and you become paralyzed. I told her that maybe she just isn't trying hard enough to move... Strange that it happens to some people but not to other.

your body releases a hormone through your spine once you enter REM state to keep you from acting out your dreams.  This hormone sometimes malfunctions relaseing too much or not enough, and the results range to disorders anywhere from sleepwalking, talking in your sleep, punching in your sleep, or not being able to move at all - sleep paralysis.

I know 2 people who have had sleep paralysis, and they were always on their back when it happened, but they didn't do it on purpose.  I don't know why anyone would want to induce sleep paralysis because its scary and its not fun.

When your body is still, and your mind is awake, its ideal for obe, but there are many better ways to obe.

thats me all the way....everytime i get past the vibration state...i get major sleep paralysis.....i dont get scared tho...most of the time i roll out (into the oob state or whatever you want to call it).....but when i do get stuck....i start trying really hard to blow air out of my mouth...and my lips vibrate to the point where i hear it......makes me mentally start laughing....and gets me out of it more times than not.......i have never (to this point) been able to hit that stage more than 1 time a night tho...seems like once you hit it....your body has to rest or somthing to "recharge" .............................................anyone ever had sleep paralysis more than 1 time in a single night...like right after you wake and go back to sleep....???
