For the first time in 4 months after failing, I tried to AP last night in bed.  Somehow my mind wandered and I started getting freaked out because I knew that even if I thought of demons, they would appear to me.  My friend told me about an experience where he was in the lower plane in this meadow.  All of a sudden it got dark and then these hooded figures with red eyes approached him as if to surround him, he knew somehow they were demonic because they scared the bejeebus out of him and were whispering in weird, guttural tongues.  Then he cussed them out and told them to go away and he floated up to a "cloud land", which sounds like the middle plane.  I started getting more scared because I started recalling stories of possesion, and inanimate objects and spirit guides roaring at the projectee.  How do I avoid this so I don't have this fear when I try tonight?

Think of angels instead. Ask your higher self for guidance and help and feel that it's already there. Shoot, whatever gets your mind off of demons, I guess. Just remember this, Demons hold no power over you if you don't fear them.
THE ANSWER PARADOX
The answer to all paradoxes shows this: "Reality contains logic therefore logic cannot contain reality."
The paradox here is "how can one know this is true?".

If the answer to one paradox is another then the question is the answer.

Mm, with a nic like yours I don't know if I can make you feel better, but I'll try-

As far as I know (and I could be wrong) there are three or general types of astral beings- Other projectors and their thoughtforms, lower astral beings (that is, simple wildlife), your own aspects and thoughtforms, and higher order demons and angels.  (In other words, intelligent entities with power associated with them.)

The other projectors and their thoughtforms can't hurt you, only scare and/or antagonize you if this is their intention, or make friends and hang out, like in physical life-
Lower astral beings are not intelligent (think a fox or a squirrel, a mosquito or a bear) and can weaken you, but not really harm you, and will stay out of your way if you stay out of theirs.  Once again, like in the material world.
The only things that usually take interest in you are your own aspects (which btw is what the guys with the red eyes sound like to me), whose job is to  keep you out of trouble and steer you into a learning situation, not always pleasant but always conducive to learning and growth, and your own thoughtforms, that by your subconscious impulse will immediately react to any passing thought and create most of the situations you fear.  This is the nature of the astral, a thought responsive environment, and most of what happens is your own conscious creation.

So if you think demon and you get an immediate demon, chances are you created it through your fear and imagination, which becomes objectified immediately.

Real demons and angels, that is higher order beings who have their existence independent to ours, do not 'immediately react' to our thoughts.  Most of the time they have 'something better to do', since their purpose is too different from ours for them to take notice of us, or to care about what we do, unless there is a significant reason for them to do so.
For example, you may have a 'mission' and may need help to achieve (in which case an angel will prob. work with your guide/aspects to help achieve) and a demon may direct it's attention to you if it's in it's interest to possess/torment you, or it may be directed at you by a powerful magician or other higher being that has an interest in you for some other reason.

So I wouldn't worry so much about demons, but I'd worry about fear, which will almost undoubtedly let you experience your version of demons, or whatever else scares you.

So if I do create a monster or demon no matter how my mind creates it the thing won't be able to do anything to me?  And its probably what I should do to get rid of the fear?

No, that's not what I'd say.  If you create a monster or 'demon' it'll probably terrorize you until you either defeat it or it drives you crazy.
And I don't think that ending in the insane asylum could be considered 'nothing'.
I don't think creating something like that would be the best thing to get rid of the fear, only you know what you're afraid of.

What I'd do would be to do a lot of introspective work to find out not only what you're scared of and know about it, but also what else could come out of your subconscious and bite you, so to speak, and then find a way to resolve these fears rationally (by talking about them, or tracing the reason for some other fears) and then maybe learning to practice projection or meditation, and see how it goes.

But no, I wouldn't recommend jumping out of an airplane for someone who has fear of heights.  I'd start with finding out why they have fear of heights, and then going from there, in a step-by step approach.

I also see "demons" because that's what I fear the most about seeing when I have obe's. Now, I say outloud "Only postive energy, only positive energy" and it helps- I don't see them anymore in the astral world. However, they do visit me in dreams still and try to prey on my fears. I always end up looking at them straight in the eye and tell them them they aren't going to get anywhere with me so stop trying! They just disappear. Then I realize how weak they really are and that I"m the one with the power over them.

One thing i've noticed in my experiences, and in the experiences of others is that you're not to under-estimate the power of your own imagination. In my last OBE i briefly noticed a knight with a sword swooping down, I had to realize in myself that it was just some garbage my conscious mind was splurting out in a sleep state. It's like the stage you enter before entering a complete sleep state, I've never known anyone without a religious background or a belief in demons to see actual demonic entities.

If you fear you'll see demons and monsters, in your de-cluttering mind of course you're going to experience these kind of horrific visuals. It's like the merging of the astral with your own imaginations.

I personally believe the only beings you'll actually encounter are either your guide(s) or other spiritual entities that are passing by out of their own curiousity, don't worry.

If your guide(s) choose to make themselves consciously known to you, you may see or feel their presence, In Michael Newtons research on Past life regression his clients regardless of current religious beliefs regress back to the 'other-side' pre-reincarnation and bring back no knowing of DEMONS per say just troubled entities that i guess could appear to you as demons as they're able to shift their energies and choose to form in whatever way they choose. Some can be mischievious according to his findings.

In the thousands of people he's regressed there's been no contradictions in what his subjects are saying, no one's seen any religious figures, demons, satan ect. Personal religion doesn't really count for anything on the otherside, Earth is a learning period!

You'll notice one feat common in all people who claim to see demonic entities! They fear seeing them!

Worry not, you're safe.
