Title: Dreaming Awake
Post by: marmalade_skies on April 23, 2008, 01:21:21
Sometimes I go into a strange state of mind, which I usually go into when I am deeply upset or sad.
My body is alseep but I have two minds. One mind is in the room and fully aware of every detail of my surroundings including all senses. However, my other mind is in a completely different place, that I have never been to before but feel as though I remember it. I can even feel the warmth from the sun in this strange place. It is a difficult concept to explain. Say for example, somebody knocked on my door whilst I was in this state, I would be able to answer immediately, then other times I choose to ignore and stay in the state.
Does anybody have any idea what this could mean, and whether it is normal or considered and out of body experience?

I think it may be a defense mechanism of some kind. I have also experienced this state in a time of profound depression. I would get visions constantly. They were usually good visions, and I would find myself in otherworldly landscapes made of light and color, strange textures I have never seen in real life, etc. Some took place on earth out West and involved Native Americans whose tribes seemed to flourish.

Yes, it I think it is similar to that. I am always in a field, sometimes the weather is different, but it is always using overcast, sun set or sometimes so sunny that the sky is orange and I can feel the warmth from it's rays. I also find that I think I can only enter it whilst listening to music. Does anybody else find this?
I have more questions too, sorry ^_^
Do other people experiences whilst they are on the edge of sleep sounds or music they are thinking of, but soudns as though it is actually being played in the ears, rather than usually music playing in the head? I have asked some other people and they believe it is hallucinations :o
Can anybody help me further on what the reason for this is?

It's very normal. Seeing things and hearing music and sounds tends to happen in the hypnogogic stage of falling asleep. Most people pass through this stage very fast and miss it, but if you stay observant you'll experience all kinds of nonsensical stuff. Get through this stage and you're close to an OBE.

Hi guys,

Actually I have learned to use the hypnogogic images as a doorway to both astral projections and OBEs.  When the images start happening (visual or audio, for me mostly visual)  I concentrate on one and follow it where it goes -- sometimes as a doorway to inward journeys or OBEs.  Try that and see what happens.

Okay, I will next time I experience them in that state. But is it normal to experience them whilst not in a hypnotic state. Sometimes I see these images and sounds whilst I am wide a wake and thinking or walking around or something. I don't have to be in a relaxed state or near sleep to see them. Could it still be linked towards OBEs?

If it's clairvoyance, it can happen at anytime. I don't know how common it is, but it happens. I think at first, to learn to perceive non-physically, it's best to relax and shut down physical senses. But after practice, an overlay perception in the physical is more than possible. As long as you feel OK and don't feel it's causing any problems, I say go with it and learn from it.
