So everywhere I've read it says that when you focus on a book, newspaper, numbers on a clock, etc. they will start to disolve or change form or something similar. This has been true since I started lucid dreaming and OBEing. I had used reality checks before with reading, and when lucid the words would melt away, and numbers on the clock would change constantly.

However a couple nights ago, I had this dream and was suddenly lucid for no reason (which is how I get lucid most of the time, my mind just tells me I'm dreaming or I start the dream out already aware) and I saw a book on a desk, picked it up and opened a page. I focused very hard on the words of the book and was reading them. Granted I was reading slow for some reason as it was difficult to focus (I can't remember why at the moment) but the words in the book did not change at all. I was able to clearly read and understand what was printed in the book. I didn't seem to think that what was printed was very useful, because I quit after a short time, but still found it really interesting!

Anyways, I drifted into a dream that lasted a really long time, and awoke later. I do not remember what I had read though.

Anyone else know why this happened? Or why I was able to read? Does this happen to anyone often?

There is nothing unusual about being able to read something in the astral.  I have done it without a problem.  If you think the words will change in some way, it will very likely change.  I would advise you to only read about ap as a guide and not to take everything it says as being true.

I have heard about reading in lucid dreams. I think it is great that you were able to read the book in the dream.

It happened to me a couple of times, either in normal or lucid dreams, that although I read something over and over again, it did not change.
I am sorry, I am so, for the things you don't know
And as for the things you do, I am sorry for those too

I often am 'forced' to read text books or test papers in a school setting. This is a real training situation in the astral you undergo for your advancement. I even had to do (simple) calculations once. It's a good sign when you are given sth to read, it has to do with progress, imho. The larger consciousness system notices your efforts and gives you tasks.

I have had this as well. It took place in my Astral School scenario. It was very difficult though, because when I saw a couple of letters, my mind immediately attempted to fill in the rest of the word. Just like a internet search engine does when you type in a couple of letters. It took a long time before I could just passively observe what was written. I have been shown different writings on Pyramids, tablets, stones, but none of them are in any Human language I know of. I even checked Sanskrit writing.  But somehow I always knew what they meant.

Usually when I try to read in dreams the words will change if I look away then back again. There have been a few times when I have started reading something and the lucid side of me is like "holy excrement, I'm actually reading!" trying to reinforce the fact that I was clearly seeing the words on the paper. Well, it worked memory wise that I remembered being able to read, but the content was gone.

I've been trying to work on my memory in such cases, but I usually can't hold onto more than a word or two after I awaken.

Truly interesting stuff!
Take to the sky, feeling so alive! Past the clouds to the Milky Way, share our secrets with the starry brigade. The stars surround us like a million fireflies. For once I see infinity... it's in your eyes.
