First off, what type of magic are you interested in trying?  Second, there are about a thousand strings just like this.  Search around, see if you can find something.  If you can't, get more specific with your questions.

You may want to try reading on different magical styles and such before starting as well.  Try a few Google searches and check into a few books that interest you before jumping in.  The research helps out before jumping in feet first!  Trust me on that.  =]

Almost every type of Magick deals with the Elements in some way, so it isn't really its own brand of magick in my opinion.

Are you looking for something with a ceremonial bent, or do you prefer what I call the "grab-and-go" types of magick?

Do you recognize one God, many gods, or no gods?

Likewise, do you perceive any kind of Divinity, even if it can't really be called God?

Those answers will color what type of magick you use to work with the elements.  For instance, I am willing to bet that Norse of old took an entirely different view of the power and value of Elemental Fire than did, say, Australian Aboriginals of both old and modern times!

Likewise, are you trying to accomplish anything above simple control, like a Zen style enlightenment, or is spell work for its own sake more to your liking?

In choosing a way to practice magick, there are many options to choose from, and many ways to walk each path.  The best thing to do is decide where you are now, where you want to be, and how you see the Elements as a tool to help you get there.

Not for me to say, honestly.  The decision has to be yours.  Given that you are following the shaman's path, though, I would suggest meditative arts (good skill no matter what magick you practice). From this point onward, I am quoting the words of a shaman friend of mine.

Also, astral traveling is great for getting in touch with purer essences of animal and plant spirits, however care must be exercised that the spirits are keeping your best interests in mind.  Get to know each element as it displays itself in nature, both in blatant shows, such as a brushlight being a display of fire, as well as the flames that both predator and prey dance in within the Hunt.  One dances within the light of the Killer Instinct while the other keeps the flames of Survival and Hope.  Both can teach equally well.  Note well, also the interplay of the elements that happens in these circumstances.

In the above example of the Hunt, let us suppose you witness a fox and a rabbit.  The Fox is using a more subdued flame than would a wolf or larger predator as it needs to keep wits.  This means that while its Fire for the Kill is strong, it is tempered with the Waters of patience, even in the face of potentially killer hunger.  Also, when the chase happens, each relies upon the Air of inspiration to either Trap or Avoid the other.  Finally, Earth is what both are actually shunning the most as they are both trying to avoid dying and returning to the Earth.  However, if they are capable, and I feel they are, I would bet they both were praying for the Earth to swallow the enemy!

Ryu,
there are many paths of learning magic.  Some safer and more effective than others.  A lot of it depends on who you are.  What suits you?  You could learn elemental magic through studying Esoteric science or you could study ninjitsu, or some other martial art like Tai Chi.  There are many options.  I recommend treading the path presented by Anthroposophy.  A perfect place to start for that study is Rudolf Steiner's book, How to Know Higher Worlds (also known as Knowledge of Higher Worlds and Its Attainment).

Do you know other magic?  Do you have experience?

Look into books by Masaaki Hatsumi.  Also, ninjitsu is more a mystical and philosophical path than a martial one, so check out philosophy, especially Western philosophy, particularly Art of War by Sun Tsu, the Tao Te Ching, and the I Ching.

where does the Kuji kuri then fit in, also ninja mind control or is it more chakra something meditation ?

anywhays the magick i was referring to was Earth/Natural - magick.

If all you really want are links, hit google.

Books are made to be read.  I suggested the books to get you started.  If you want to know more, read the books.  Sorry, but I will NOT synopsize the entire world for anyone.  Do a little work.  Dig in, the world is yours, but you have to put in an effort to see any profit.

Bloodsong

Ryuji

agreed effort is needed :)

thanks, but remember that you didnt know anything in the start and it is always good to ask those who have walked the road abit when you are lost...

True enough.  However, I never asked one who told me of reference material to provide information that was inside the reference material recommended.

Besides, my entire early training took the form of, "Here, read this book."  I read it, then looked at the bibliography and started reading some of those, then went to the bibliographies in those books.  At least that is how it was for most of the Elemental/Ceremonial works that I learned.  That book I was handed was Modern Magick by Donald Michael Kraig.  The guy who gave me that book also gave me a stern warning "Here, read this book!  I have learned that this will send you straight to hell"  Some great teacher, huh?  Guess he misunderstood detached for masochistic.

For "Folk" magick, my grandfather taught me.  No need of books, but it did take over 16 years, and now I continue to learn on my own.

Where can i find out about Air elemental magic.

bloodsong

OK, this is not an answer really, but where is everyone getting the idea that you can separate a single element in a working?  You can focus one only, but so far as my experience tells me, you cannot really exclude the other three, just lessen their effect.  Magick is cumulative and inclusive, not excluding in any way.

For those who've not yet found a good source for practicing elemental magic (not *just* theory and ideas), try http://forums.vsociety.net/topic/5141.0 this article,

*and be sure to download the pdf at the end of the article-post because it has the rest of the article that wasn't included in that post. The pdf contains the practice excercises*

ok, heres a quick question ... sorry to hijack the thread, but i figure its a good place to ask.
im directing this towards the person in this thread who seems to have done a bit of work with magic.
i rarely dicuss this sort of stuff with anyone.
they warn against talking to people about magic, and for good reason.
give it a try sometime if you like, go to the local library, or ice cream parlor and start talking about ritual magic... see how long it takes before the person you are talking with thinks you are a wacko and runs away.

Ive found the Elements to be a system of classification, as most of magic is.... (or atleast thats what i gathered... numbers, names, colors, symbols, signs, sights, smells, body movements, body feelings.... to all of these are assigned an idea. the practice of working with these "tools" allows one to "think" on a different level, to immideatly associate an elaborate and detailed "idea" with a simple symbol. bypassing the normal though process where ideas are put into words....
then to have these ideas and symbols interact with each other.... and thats about as far as ive gotten...

i digress...

anyways my question is....
if a person exibits Too many qualities of a certan element, what can he do to balance himself
ha, theres even a clue in the last sentence of what element it is.....
anyways, i find myself to be harsh, logical, mentally dominating, sometimes i have great focus and can devour great amounts of information, yet most of the time i find myself wavering, unable to decide because both possibilities are equal.
my method of helping others consists of breaking down and eliminating the incorrect parts, rather than encouraging the correct ones...
i can be a real bastard sometimes, and i hate that about myself. sometimes i recoil in horror at the things i have done. I exibit too many negative charachteristics of a certain element, and i want to change...

but when it comes time to make a decision, i always seem to fall back on the same patterns.

is there a way to infuse myself with the opposite element in order to impose a little balance? to help me change the negative components of my personality? or would the introduction of another element cause  even more problems?

Actually, i think i already know what i need to do....
LBRP, every day, twice a day, maybe more....
Middle pillar, every day...
its like a boxer's 1-2 punch.... the best tool in his arsenal....

so what do ya think? will LBRP help me clear out this over-abundance of element in my personality?
or atleast rid myself of the negative qualities? sadly, this element does not posess many "good" qualities, its quite powerful i suppose, but very little good ever seems to come of it....

again, im not sure if i am even correct, but in studying the tarot, the minor arcana of these cards seems to have alot more negativity as compared to other elements.

andonitxo

I bought time ago some books on this type of magick, as those by Franz Bardon, where you are instructed to be one with each element.

The exercises were quite simple: element breathing, visualizations, and so on, but I didn't feel much effect after practicing them.

And, added to it, and because the authors were closely related to some old sects, the overall "feeling" was not so "clean" as that you can obtain with other techniques. For example, chakra theory, yoga, pranayama and so forth have a different "light".

In fact, the best results ever in my life have come thanks to the NEW system and the kundalini reiki. Practicing those two I've felt what I hadn't felt with a varied sort of rituals and different practices. In fact, it helps a loooot to have a forum like this to find out that common people can achieve great spiritual results just practicing in their homes and just with their imagination capabilities.

So I'd recommend you to wash your pipes out before submerging into deeper waters.

I suggest reading Initiation into Hermetics by Franz Bardon and concurrently work on developing the energy body and building up the light quotient . As the feet and hands become stronger , your palette of elements you can control will increase in number .

If you want to learn about other elements , mystic projection helps to hear from spirit teachers . Communication with elementals will teach you about the uses , controls and attunements to particular energies .
