Yeah it looks very much like something intercepted it.

If I had to wager a guess, I might say the meteor tripped one of Russia's many interballistic missile defense systems.

The antinukes they have for strategic missiles (some of them go around 10,000 mph at full speed) are just fast enough to intercept an object going that fast; the meteor was said to have slowed considerably after having traveled through the atmosphere for so long, so this explanation seems plausible.

Stillwater that sounds like the most likely explanation. 

I can't imagine why a potential UFO would go on a suicide mission to try to destroy a meteor 'Prometheus' style.

Wasn't that town like one of the central places in Russia for nuclear research or something? I wouldn't doubt that they had some sort of defense like that.

We all looked up at a white disc 1/2 the size of the moon and saw smaller pieces of the same flying off in all directions. The white of one changed to orange...

From my other thread regarding this. It makes me wonder if the heat and the white that surrounded me was the steam produced from the lake.
It adds up...
