Preferred Sleeping Position

I was laying on my back one night when I had a very weird experience, I didn't know then that it was an OBE, so I struggled awake.  I opened my eyes, patted the sheets down, all was well, until I closed my eyes and was instantly 'there' again.  I struggled awake again and assumed that it was my sleeping position ie; sleeping on my back.  For months afterwards I slept on my stomache!  Of course, now I sleep on my back every night hoping to experience it again.  I read somewhere that it is easier to OBE when lying on your back, something to do with the magnetic field or something, dunno...

Greetings!

The best positions for OBE are flat on the back, or sitting in a chair with head straight.

Sitting in a chair is a recommended position. One of the main problems associated with lying down in bed, even flat, is that the body is programmed to fall asleep, and so you might go straight through deep relaxation and trance to sleep.

Also, even if you do OBE from a lying down position, the chances of a decent memory download or lessened. Because of that, I believe Robert recommends, OBE from a hard chair.

Best regards,

Adrian.

Would like to know if there is a preferred sleeping position in which
to experience OBEs?

I usually cant get a goood position to lay still, after some time i ilways need to move to be comfortable.....
....strange thing is when i fall asleep i can sleep unconfortable(once i wake up with paralised all my left hand, becose i slept on my shoulder..), but if im uncomfortable and still not asleep i have to move...
Btw, when i sit in chaoir and fall asleep i usually wake up when my left leg starts to move(fast, like when you gat a mild electric shock)

I red that after some time your body says to your brain that hes uncomfortable only to check if mind is awake, and its a very strong feeling..
how can i differ that its a bodys fake signal or im realy uncomfortable/hurting myself
Nice to see you :)

hey cobalt, I reckon a huge amount of people get what your describing, I do! Its one of the harder things for me to do - stay on my back comfortably. I cant sleep on my back fullstop, so its good to try meditation/obe from. Pity I cant sleep on my back though, because I can only sleep on my stomach, and that really hurts your shoulders and neck. Didnt always sleep on my stomach though so dont know what happened there :) I also read the mind checking for body awake thing, and it sounds like it may make sense. How could you hurt yourself from lying down on a flat, soft, comfy bed? And you stay in one position all night so it cant be bad for you, surely?

Hi,

I had a very vivid lucid dream, which I took to be another dimension once. I'd woken around 5 and turned onto my LEFT side, to find myself almost immediately in another reality.

RB mentions laying on different sides for different experiences. Also Mr C. Castaneda in 'The Art of Dreaming' tells of one of Don Juan's techniques that is related. He instructed Castaneda to lay down and fall asleep whislt in a lucid dream. The position in which you lay (right, left, etc) relates to the world/dimension you shift to.

Hi

So far every time I have projected..I was laying on my left side kind of curled up in a fetal position.  Not sure why..

I sit in a chair.  That works for me.  I once would stay awake for 24 hours or so to induce OOBE.  It would work but the sensation of it was not pleasant.  I would be asleep and I could feel my my other self leaving my body.  This spooked me at the time.  That was in 1998 or 1999.  Anyway, it woke me up.  Now I use a chair.

For people who use a hard chair,

What happens to your head? When I try it, I am worried that my head will fall into an extremely uncomfortable position, that I will have neck problems, or that I will fall forward completely and off the chair.

Has anyone experienced these problems? Or is my worry unreasonable?

I usually try sleepinng on my back and if I get Paralysis roll out to the left.  I have pretty good success this way.  Some of the absolute best projections I have had have been after falling asleep in the front seat of my car after reclining the seat back.  In fact the first I ever had was like this.  It was a summer night and I was on lunch break from work.  I went out to my car, fell asleep and simply found myself in the front bedroom of my home twenty miles away without experiencing any exit sensations.  I don't know why this position is so good for projection but have read other posts that also sugest using a recliner chair.  I would definently recomend using a recliner and am thinking about getting one.

(This is just my opinion)

Firstly don't lie down and plant in your subconscious mind "sleeping position for OBE" as inevitably you'll fall asleep and your OBE would have failed.

Think of lying down as an OBE Position - don't lie on your sides as you'll end up in coco land... stay on your back but slightly elevated! If you're lying flat and with your head only slightly raised, your body is programmed to interpret this as your sleeping position. Be comfortable but not to comfortable, you're going to have to fight of that urge anyway.

Obviously sitting up in a chair is most peoples preferred position but if you can lie down and be elevated about 20-30(d) your mind will be tricked in-between sleeping position and wake position which is a perfect time for your body to be relaxed/asleep and your mind awake!

Using pillows to raise you is probably best.... Persevere,  but I usually find that 5 or 6 pillows under my head and about 2 to 3 under my back raise me high enough!  You may find more or less is better for you!
Remember you want to be at an angle, so keep your head high and your body gradually descending.
I haven't lost my mind, I've backed it up somewhere...

Telos, I havent got a hard chair but Ive meditated, tried OBE from a computer chair and when Im tired my head always falls forward and jolts me back to reality, so I really doubt youd fall off.

I found it that if i dont use my pillow i get better sleep, and if i dont use pilow i can lie on my back for a long time, but i cant go sleep(its not my SLEEPING position)...
So if i lie on side i fall a sleep...
If i lie on my back i get strange sensations in my back(upper part), btw what is located in my upper back, i can induce kripples from there wich sometimes ends fast just there sometimes goes like ping to my fingertips and head(tingle all other parts along its path) and then comes back its like blast, but uzually it dosnt makes so far...but i induce it often, exciting feeling :)
Here is a pic i made os you can understand me(but ints rare when it goes trought whole body, i dont know what affects this), i can induce it by closing my eyes and thinking about something very good:
Nice to see you :)

It's usually easiest for me on my back because it takes longer to fall asleep or on my couch since I don't normally sleep there.  I have unsuccessfully tried several times to project while sitting in a chair but it's always hard to relax and fall asleep.
