i always thought of astral matter as thought forms.  i use "astral matter" in ritual practice by infusing astral matter from myself into an object that i'm working with (like a crystal or talisman or something).

i don't remember who teaches this (it's one of the older occult authors, the book i read it in was a co-authored book, i don't remember either author, if i do i'll update this post), but i remember learning to look at my hands in front of a dark background in a dimly lit room and seeing astral matter coming out of my finger tips and manipulating it.  eventually, the authors teach you to create a double of yourself with astral matter that you then transfer your awareness (attention) into.
be awesome.

I read something like that in the old book (1983) of "Leaving the Body" by D. Scott Rogo  (it's full of different techniques,..so I don't remember exactly where about in the book the reference might be).  And that's really interesting about looking at your fingertips in a darkened room.  I used to do that a lot,...and thought I was actually seeing the aura (or at least the "energy field" coming out like wisps of smoke).

i think the astral matter is a misinterpretation of energy. Some kinds of energy feel like some kind of matter. And the intensification of supernatural sensations during an out of body experience makes the misinterpretation much easyer.
