I've had out of body experiences throughout my lifetime, but just recently learned about astral projection. I've had several instances where I've been floating around my house, doing normal things, and even seen my sleeping body, but it would always cause me to freak out and I would immediately start trying to wake myself up. I learned about astral projection a few months ago, however, and I've been wanting to learn to have more control over the things I do, and have better experiences. I finally got the opportunity last night, but something went really wrong and I was just looking for some input on it. Okay so here goes...

I felt myself coming out of my body and I was really excited because this time I was felt like I was finally going to be able to get that great experience of astral projection. I saw myself sleeping, as usual, but when I tried to decided what I wanted to do, or where I wanted to go, I sort of panicked and couldn't decide. I kind of closed my eyes and thought "I'll end up where I'm supposed to be" trying to leave it up to my subconscious I guess, but it backfired and all of a sudden, the room flipped upside down, and I couldn't tell which way was up, or figure out how to get out of the room at all. I couldn't figure out how to get through the walls or anything and when I tried to figure it out I got this sudden pain in my foot, and ended up back inside my body.  I was in my bed again, and I was trying to figure out how to leave my body again when I heard something whispering beside me (I couldn't make out what it was saying but I know I heard my name and the word "bigger"). I didn't know what it was and I couldn't see it but I had this feeling like it was something bad and that I needed to get out of there. So I started trying to wake myself up and it took me several tries but I finally did. This all happened within the space of an hour. It really freaked me out.

Welcome.

Nothing went wrong. You got scared and that's natural. You'll work through that if you want to have better experiences then floating around your bed. But even that's pretty damn cool.

Working through this fear is one of the great benefits of having OOBEs.

My advice is to pre-pick a destination until you get comfortable. Leaving this decision up to a "higher" cause can be the last thing you expect. Of course, there's nothing wrong with that.
It ain't what you don't know that gets you into trouble. It's what you know for sure that just ain't so.

Thoughts. Well, I'm kind of confused by your first statement.

If you have been having out of body experiences throughout your life, you have been Astral Projecting all along.

The only difference I believe there is, is in your level of awareness.

You basically answered your own question with this statement "you panicked" and then everything went weird.

Like IAB said "you got scared and that's perfectly natural". Just know though that you will get better with practice.

For now use a focused will and intent on a planned destination, such as a tranquil beach scene or perhaps a relaxing hobby.

Something that brings you peace and tranquility.

There will be plenty of time later to open yourself to "a higher place or purpose" later.

Good Luck and Safe Travels!  :-)
