Hi, this kind of experience seems to be fairly common. You may find the following article by Robert Bruce informative as it sounds like a "Dweller on the Threshold" type of experience to me and not something to be overly worried about. [:)]

"Hypnagogic State

The condition which exits between the awake and sleeping states which is characterized by illusions of vision and sound. It was first recognized around 1845 by J. G. F. Baillarger (1809-1890) in France, and W. Griesinger (1817-1869) in Germany.

The state was studied by the scholar and antiquarian Alfred L. F. Maury who named it "illusions hypnagogiques." This condition is distinguished from "hypnopompic visions" which appear the moment that sleep recedes and momentarily persist in the awake state. Both types of illusions are related to the faculty of dreaming; however, hypnagogic illusions may be a precursor to out-of-body experiences. A.G.H."

"4. Sleep-related hallucinations (Hypnagogic or hypnopompic hallucinations)

Hypnagogic or hypnopompic hallucinations are visual, tactile, auditory, or other sensory events, usually brief but occasionally prolonged, that occur at the transition from wakefulness to sleep (hypnagogic) or from sleep to wakefulness (hypnopompic). The affected individual may hear sounds that aren't there and/or see illusions. These visual and auditory illusions are very vivid and may be bizarre or disturbing to the victims.

People report being fully awake and aware but completely paralyzed. Sometimes they see a strange light. Most often there is pervasive fear, sometimes so strong that people are sure they are about to die. Other parts of their hallucination, which may include people, animals, parts of objects, or just shapes, have a mysteriously nightmarish quality.

The hallucinations are quite vivid and specific. People visualize intruders in their bedroom; they see someone coming through the window, they hear footsteps getting closer and closer and they fear they would be murdered in their bed. Some victims see frightening stranger walk in and out of their bedroom.

This phenomenon also can occur in individuals who do not suffer from narcolepsy, particularly in children."

as a course of small introduction, i'm an amature where most things spirit related are concerned, save for small forays of research into astral projection itself. it was quite interesting trying to figure out where to place this particular..problem, but it has to do with the fact that information on self-defense and anchoring in aspect to the astral plane are, limited. everything focuses on how to get there, but not..dangers. this wouldn't be a problem save for that what happened to me has me on edge.
i've never really tried to astral project, in fact...i just tend to unintentionally enter the first stages of it as i'm drifting off to sleep. my body has built in its own unique version of self defense, wakes me up while i'm relatively grounded (low vibration).
thus begins this episode, usually accompanied by a small, incredibly detailed dream sequence. in this one i walked beside an old house, but near this old house there was a very small grave plot..no bigger than say, 8 x 8 square, with a handful of headstones. it was very obscured and hard to see beyond it, but amongst the headstone were dark, writhing shadows, and as i came near the graveplot, the voices began. there was this urgent need to get into the house and away from the graveplot, but i ignored it, trying to hear the voices.
these voices, weren't my own. as soon as i began hearing them, i felt this powerful vibration that actually woke me up, blending the dream into waking (with the voices still near my ear). the vibration was so strong beneath the skin, i expected the covers would be rippling with it almost...just shy of, painful, and i was thinking "sine waves" with how they felt. it took tossing, and turning to get them to dissipate, and for some time i couldn't even see my room even though i knew my eyes were open and the television was on.
the only thing i can attribute them to is the high vibration of near-detachment found in astral projection. something, or some things, were trying to..pull me out. i would not be so unnerved, except that i did not voluntarily try to astral project, therefore had no..forewarning. i do not know how to guard against this, haven't been able to find anything like what happened to me around. despite the urge to Get Away Now, i sensed nothing really malevolent about the voices.
has anybody else had an experience like this, or know any way to defend oneself from such episodes?
