Reality TV is poor, most especially a show like BB.

Heres why:

* Noone cares, and if you do, you shouldnt.

* It gets so much prime time TV that other good shows get ousted.

* The people in the house are either
a) more emotional than Ally Mcbeal or;
b) really serious. Eg: Guy who went for a tinkle when he wasnt supposed to. "Im REALLY REALLY sorry. i just HAD to go. if i didnt go i would have  WET MYSELF i really REALLY had to do i couldnt HOLD ON i would have WET MYSELF!". I think they sometimes forget much of what they say is being watched by millions of people who will laugh at them when they get out.

* Big Brother is so serious its funny.

* They do stupid things like "bunker duty"

* They get "reprimanded" for using the same cloth to clean the toilet that they wash the dishes with.

* Webcams are much cooler, have more nudity and arent commercialised.

There you go :)

Fenris - love your work mate! Glad to oblige as I just *love* Reality TV, in all it's forms, but especially shows like BB....

Rules are as per previous "debate", now with points scored as follows :-
- 10 points: argument makes no sense, but sounds good
- 5 points: argument makes no sense
- 0 points: argument makes sense
- +2 points: quality slander of opposition
- +3 points: for each Homerism in post
- +5 points: for a Homerism that actually adds to the argument
(Scoring determined by consensus)

On that note, I actually think there are *no* bad points about reality TV whatsoever. Just take the most perfect incarnation of RTV - Big Brother - it's entertaining, educational, emotional and fulfills that little place in our heart that craves rags-to-riches celebrity.

Some examples -
Entertaining: when the events in the BB house where getting a little stale, a brave outsider decided to crash the house by flying a para-glider into the back yard. Of course, since the para-glider was made in Australia, and the guy was obviously trained in Australia, he missed the house completely and landed in a paddock next door. Not before he launched a football into the back yard that said "Johnny is a back-stabbing a**hole" (which he was). It was great TV!! http://www.astralpulse.com/forums/images/icon_Smile.gif" border=0>

Educational: who could forget the "greyhound races" of last year's BB! For the non-Aussies, the greyhound races were where three blokes dropped their pants, put bottle tops over their manhoods, and raced a few laps of the kitchen table for the girls' enjoyment, greyhound style. We saw many copy-cat incidents in pub toilets and locker-rooms across the country after that!

Emotional: I've shed many tears on this year's show - when Katrina's goldfish died http://www.astralpulse.com/forums/images/icon_Smile_sad.gif" border=0>, when Turkan wanted to leave the house in tears http://www.astralpulse.com/forums/images/icon_Smile_angry.gif" border=0>, when they cut the girl-on-girl action out of the uncut show http://www.astralpulse.com/forums/images/icon_Smile_tongue.gif" border=0>.

Despite my obvious perfection in many areas, I still crave a guest appearance on shows like: Ibiza Uncovered, Survivor 4, WWF Tough Enough, and it has been a dream of many years to one day become a bouncer on Jerry Springer (God bless his wholesome soul) whose show I consider a resplendent example of RTV at it's best.

H.Simpson: "Dear Lord, I know you're busy, seeing as how you can watch women changing clothes and all that .."

Anyway, if there's anyone still reading, consider the gauntlet thrown down. Score 8. I don't really know of many other international RTV shows apart from BB, and Survivor though.

I personally don't find reality TV all that real.  Think about it.  What are the odds that with all these shows that people actually find them selves in these situations.  The whole thing is a set up from the get go.   There are people who do these kinds of things every day and they are not competing for any money at all.  They do it because they want to.  That is the life that they want.  There are not enough things that happen in my life that would warrent a show.  "Normal life"  is just not that interesting and "Reality TV" is not that normal and nor is it real by any means.

Most people don't even understand reality. People think drama and competition (arguing? backstabbing? plotting?) is what reality is about? Ech. Reality TV translates to one thing: money.

Just another passing trend of mainstream media. Polishing the brass on the Titanic...it's all going down.

There is no reality tv, hhhmmm ,I can see this post ending up under meta pysics as "difine reality". I suppose big brother ect is the reality outcome of the procedures taken to gain ratings, but does it fall into the label reality, geeees I hope not.

Regards Steve

Reality TV = Get a life (more to the point, live your own)

Ashfo

Seems like the pro-RTV people are losing hmm? :)

Id rather watch something funny like Six Feet Under, Black Books or one of my Monty Python or Blackadder tapes.

AT LAST!! Turkan gets voted off BB!! Woohoo.....

You guys have got to be kidding re: so-called "reality". Everyone understands that "Reality TV" isn't a camera watching a mundane person live a mundane life. No debate there, and I'm sure the masses wouldn't want that kind of TV either.

Reality TV is taking *ordinary* people, and placing them in contrived situations for the purpose of viewing pleasure. It's a kind of poor-man's celebrity, being able to watch the person next door living out some fiction on the small screen. It beats just about every other form of show hands down - soapies, documentaries, news, weather, lotto numbers, anything! Shows like BB are like a 12-person goldfish bowl where life, drama and relationships can be seen up close, instead of scripted and delivered by actors.

Sure money is a part of it, but that means nothing. That's what TV networks and production companies do for a living. It's the *type* of TV they deliver that makes RTV the best!

Steveb - I agree RTV isn't a substitute for real life. It doesn't have to be to be good viewing nonetheless.

Of course, there's no accounting for people's tastes, which is what most of this comes down to. Some like horror flicks, some like reality tv, others like swimsuit modelling contests, and if you're a bloke you like all three.

Anyway - don't know where else the debate can go from here. Except maybe the uncut shows.

All the best!

cainam_nazier

I guess I derive no pleasure from watching fish.

There are only so many things that you can do before it gets old.  Like Survivor.  And to use some thing from the great wise man himself.

"mmmm, Chocholate...DUH!, Hey Marge we need more neopolean ice cream."

If you want chocolate (reality) buy chocolate (web cams).  Don't buy neopolean (reality tv, which by the way is an oximoron).

How many points to I get for that?

Oh wait, I forgot my insult.

"Or is the reality of it that you have no lives of your own and are there for forced to watch some one elses?"

I've heard the phrase don't kick a man when he is down but tell me honestly...Can you think of a better time to kick him?

LOL Cainam - not a bad post for a girl http://www.astralpulse.com/forums/images/icon_Smile.gif" border=0>.

I agree that certain shows will grow old, but Reality TV will *never* get old - they'll just invent more shocking and lude versions of the classics we know and love. In 5 years we'll be watching naked chicks on rollerblades kill each other in bloodsports, or (more realistically) the first human execution live on TV. Anyone who thinks that's old material needs to be taken to the local police station.

Poor attempt at a Homer quote - no relevance whatsoever. As you may be new to this sort of thing, Homer has some sage advice for you - "If the Bible has taught us nothing else, and it hasn't, its that girls should stick to girl's sports, such as hot oil wrestling, foxy boxy, and such and such... "

CN> "Oh wait, I forgot my insult. "
.....well, I'm still waiting.... was it the "reality of your own lives" thing? Well, I'm sure many people could say the same thing about internet forums.... The fact is, people think it's either/or - whereas the reality is people who live with / have friends like those on BB will watch the show for the same reason. They're the kind of people who like it. The lifeless wonders are on IRC, ICQ or something.

As for the "kick them when you're down" quote, well I'm not sure who you're referring to there "maniac" but it got my vote for sheer class.

Don't feel bad cainam, "You tried your best and failed miserably. The lesson is 'never try'." (H.Simpson)

PS: Like I said before, none of the above is serious. There are a dozen other shows I'll watch before BB, including Southpark, (but not SNL!? Are you kidding - I barely laugh once in a whole episode) The point is to have a frivolous, derisive debate for the sake of it. There is, of course, nothing personal at all http://www.astralpulse.com/forums/images/icon_Smile.gif" border=0>.

Ciao "maniac"

cainam_nazier

ooooooo, I am in awe...No wait it's just gas.  Much like your ramblings, nothing but hot air.

"In 5 years we'll be watching naked chicks on rollerblades.."

That not reality tv it's called the playboy channel.  Lossen your grip [:o] and try some classic entertainment like Mystery Science Theater.

And executions should be public.  I think that it might be some what of a better deterant for crime.  Most people don't have an idea of what punishment is and there for don't seem to care about what they do.

"whereas the reality is people who live with / have friends "  <- Question..So how much is that costing you?http://www.astralpulse.com/forums/images/icon_Smile_wink.gif" border=0>

Although I must say your ability to qoute the all mighty Homer is great.  That I am truely in awe of.

Forgive me for my uneventful absence... seems Joe is holding up the fort just fine and dandy though. However stand back and strap on something rigid and supportive as I show how to get a 10 point post.

- 10 points: argument makes no sense, but sounds good

Cainam your progress is astounding, but there you are still sucking! http://www.astralpulse.com/forums/images/icon_Smile.gif" border=0>

Reakity TV has no flaws, it simply dosnt...infact reality TV might just be the pinicle of contemporary entertainment. The origional topic was that reality TV's goods out weigh its bads...well Im taking this further and asking... what bads? Every single point made against reality TV so far has been so very wrong, made by cynical twisted introverts, arguing the realities of reality, misribly attempting to quote a level of humor I doubt they even truely understand.

Why all this confusion, because reality is in the eye of the beholder. How reality telivision touches us is a deeply individual  & personal experience. The people chosen for our viewing may be extreams of personality types yes, but they reflect parts of ourselves which are perhaps denied. You dislike reality telivision because you are programed and conform to set social beliefs. Allow me to elaborate... what you belive to be wright or wrong, funny or not funny, entertaining or not entertaining you belive because of our set social standards. In essance if you dont like reality TV for anyreason whatsoever you dislike it because of social conditioning, and as such your argument is meaningless and weak.

Now step into the shoes of the more evolved people who apreciate reality TV for its true beauty and reflection of those hidden and represed parts of ourselves. Or rather step into their boots, because the ug boot is a perfect example here, so very practical yet shuned by society so cruely ("nobody likes a bogan") "So there we were at the local club playing a friendly hand of backgammon" "Mr Simpson I remind you that you are under oath" "Ok fine we were eating packets of powdered gravey in the back od barneys car!". Dont hide it, reality TV is a reflection of everyone, of humanity itself, dont deny yourself any longer...you ARE reality TV

Those who are truely evolved create there own reality and are not subject to that which is presented before them.

You argue that we have been programed to hate Reality TV and that those that wtach it have not been programed what so ever.   So why is it that the mainstream thing currently is Reality TV?   Ah you poor ignorante, you do not even realize the level of brainwashing that has occured.  Reality TV is mainstream as in every one watches it.  You have become a victim of the machine.
Was that simple enough for you to understand?

The true horror of it is that unfortunatly Reality TV will continue to live because it is supported by the mindless.  The helpless masses sucked in to believing that they like something that everyone else hates.  Reality TV has become the new Howard Stern of television.  The sheep will watch not becuase they like it but because they want to find out what happens next.

It's sad really to see people controlled so.  Next you will see the Reality TV hats, t-shirts, socks, underwear, and toilet paper.  Each with a little chip in it telling you to watch more so the ratings go up so they can sell you more stuff.  All this because you lack the will power to say NO, I will not be controled anymore, I will not watch this crap.  But no instead you will sit in your dark little cave with your mindless friends, who are really only using you for your TV, and watch because you can not control your own reality.

I feel nothing but pitty for you.

Ok this spawns form the job section, thought it was better to start a new thread than annoy all of the people wanting to talk about jobs-again http://www.astralpulse.com/forums/images/icon_Smile.gif" border=0>

Joe-

Hmmm....new debate topic? "Reality TV's good points outweigh its bad points"

Ok buddy Im up for it, not sure where to stand on this one...what the hey it seems like your out numbered by others so what do you say we go tag team on this one. It will be like a beautiful synergy between the forces of light and darkness. Others may say its like two snivling disagreeable Aussies playing on the same team for once http://www.astralpulse.com/forums/images/icon_Smile_wink.gif" border=0>

Ok on the positive team that Realitiy TV's good points out weigh its bad points we so far have:

Fenris & Joe -the intelectual thunder from down under! (he he think about that one!- its funny cause I typed it before I realised!)

And on the negative team we have... Were counting on all of thoses BB dising people- you know who you are!

Joe- but if they dont want to play I can always beat you in an argument  http://www.astralpulse.com/forums/images/icon_Smile_approve.gif" border=0>
