Improving your memory?

Maybe its not necisarrily a memory problem, maybe its how you remember things. I have a photographic memory, but I remember things incorrectly, I have bad "organizational skills" when it comes to remembering things (according to the Woodcock Johnston tests, etc..)
Maybe you just have bad organization when it comes to remembering things, thats my two cents.

I'd say it depends on your attention span/focus. I can go to do something and have so much going through my head that I totally forget what I got up for and wander aimlessly around until I have to think about what I'm doing again, but then when I go to learn something and I'm focused on it, I have no problem remember things.

There's something like this that deals with short and long-term memory, too. It's like when something happens, you may forget about it for a while until you don't have as much on your mind, then you suddenly remember something from months ago that you had forgotten about, etc.
What is the sound of no leaves cloving?

Sometimes people can be very smart but forgetful, you've heard of the "absent minded professor" perhaps. Other times it can be that we just have too much going on in our lives and small details seem to vanish.

Since this doesn't apply to your music Squeek, it may be that your memory is just fine. It could be that you just prioritize things and the order of importance omits things that aren't terribly important.

In any event, if you really want to test your ability to recall, there are standardized tests that psychologists administer that can give you an idea of how your memory works.

I recommend a better diet and enough sleep.  I am just like you though, I'm really smart, but I don't remember things unless I'm interested or if they're funny.

I parked at the mall the other day, and when I left I walked out of the opposite side of the mall I parked on.

I'm not qualified to comment as your doctor so take this advice with that in mind.

Sounds to me like you have a amino acid shortage in your body, among other things, do you lead a overtly stressfull life?  Do you smoke a lot of pot (some is GREEEEAAATTT!  But too much, well that's no different than being an alcoholic in my view)?
Do you get enough sleep...?  These are some questions you can ask yourself, as well as getting some exercise at times does increase certain hormone levels in your body and promotes memory and especially focus enhancing chemicals (naturally made in your body) to help with memory and focus.

You don't have to do this, but here's another harmless suggestion...

Make a shake everday, have it in the morning, or the noon, or the night, either after you get up, or in the midday when you're sluggish (both mentally and physically), or after your afternoon workout (not to close to your bedtime though as this might interfere with your sleep if it's taken too soon before bedtime)...  The time you do this is up to you.

Here's the ingrediants (it has everything you need to get some "get up and go" and handle the day with more relaxed focus and energy than you had before without taking a million pills)

~ 8-12 ounces of Aloe Vera Juice (if you need more energy) or milk.

~ 1 serving of protein powder (vanilla or strawberry are great flavours as they mix well taste-wise with anything practically).  Soy or whey, it doesn't really matter.

     ~ 1 tablespoon of Brewer's Yeast
     ~ 1 tablespoon of Lecithin
~ 1 tablespoon of Barley Greens (or) Spirulina
~ 1 tablespoon of Bee Pollen
~ 1 serving of Flax Seed Oil
     ~ 1 raw egg
~ Cut up 1 or 2 fruits (apples, oranges, etc...)
~ 1 serving of Multiple Vitamin Powder
     ~ 500 grams (+) or M.S.M. powder
~ 2 tablespoons of Apple Cider Vinegar (with the mother in it)
~ Mix in a good tablespoon of Smoothy Mix with this all.
~ add some ice from a tray, turn the bloody blender on and you have yourself a health drink that beef any brain up and would kick Thor's *ss to Valhalla!

Now obviously you probably should do some meditation or other worthy spiritual work on yourself as well as some exercise.  But other than that and all the great vitamins/minerals/herbs and amino acids you'd get from the drink above, I don't see how you couldn't get a great deal of improvement from these suggestions.

Watch me answer your questions RIGHT QUICK!

1. Do I lead an overly stressful life?  Absolutely not.  I'm actually one of the laziest people you'll ever see.

2. Do I smoke?  Of course not.  No need for an explanation why.

3. Not really a question... but...  I don't need any more energy in me [:)]  I'm hyperactive as it is.

Yea that makes sense.  A Hyperactive Lazy Teenager.

If you arent ambydextrous, try using your other hand for more common activities, such as eating or taking a tinkle or something. It increases brain activity to conpensate for the new motor skills being introduced, which then leads to better memory.

Squeek,

Memory for Music does not take place at the same location in the brain... People ill with the  Alzeimer desease (not sure how to spell that one, sorry; but that desaese is for older people usually) do have a loss of memory that would affect them badly, but, however, they would not loss the ability to play music, read music, etc... Practicing music and musical instrument happens to develop more nerves at the base of the brain. If this loss of memory is bothering you that much, then why not visit the physician ? It is true that sleep, balanced diet, etc.. will help you (you might need some basic vitamins maybe?), but there might also be a more serious problem, and it is better to check that out.

I hope you will not forget to check the answers on your own posting...

Good luck! and I hope it is nothing!!!

There was a good idea for remembering from the tv show Seinfeld. Instead of naming parking spaces section 4 row 33, they should call it "your dad is a raging alcoholic" etc because you wouldnt forget that.

That is exactly right but even when it comes to music different aspects are associated with different parts of the brain.   Reading and writing music abilities are associated with a different part of the brain than that which is associated with memorizing lyrics of music.

I am the kind of person that can listen to a song over and over again without being able to remember the lyrics of the song but I could hum or sing all of the music note for note.  Many times when I listen to music I don't even hear the words they blend in and just become a part of the composition.  I guess this is why I tend to listen to instrumentals as they have the whole message in just the music and I can actually pick up on it.  If I want to hear words I have to sit with the little booklet in the cover and follow along with the lyrics.  My hearing is a definite oddity, I can hear things of lower and higher frequency than the majority of people, but some very specific frequencies in the middle I can't hear unlike most people.

I guess what I am trying to get at is we are all different and you should not let you memory problems in one area affect the rest of you mind as well.  Squeek, you have a gift to memorize lyrics which is something I do not.  We all have our gifts and we must find ways in which to utilize them to our benefit to overcome our shortcomings.

Heres a way to remember an almost endless list .

First imagine the 2 first things on the list , pair them togheather in some odd way and distort them (like realy enlarge small things use imagination ) Now pair them togheater in a odd way. (if i was gonna remember ,fish and siggaretes id imagine a Big fish smoking)

Next take the second and the third thing on the list and do the same ,then  nr 3 and nr 4  and so on .

Tip : If something you wanna remember for days or while new run the list trough your head once or twise 10 min after . Use porn ,funny situations ,whatever honks your horn to make it more interesting rembering . When recalling ussually begin with the first or last item . If you cant remember them search for one of the others (if you make one extra funny/nasty picture in the middle (of a long list) you can use it as a bookmark as it would pop right up when you try and remember the list and think about such a picture.

To sum it up , after getting the hang of it you will realise its just getting to much to forget rather than to much to remember!

Off course not everthing is worth making lists off (like getting ice cubes).Less foolproof but might help.

with icecubes (I know no one expects to forget that or take a tinkle for that matter) imagine you going getting the cubes and imagine what it will feels like when you succseed in this task (like cold)

When leaving the kitchen or any place you "might" have forgotten something search for such pictures with feeling .Also do this after a distraction (phonerings ,unjust flamming from your father etc.). The point is after a while if you catch yourself forgetting ,you just will remember things better ,since you will automaticly perform this task ,without conciesly doing this.

Hope it helps and sorry that i cant offer any more mystical sollution [:P] .

I use to use gingko biloba to tone my memory. It worked but caused bleeding problems when I took it to long. "Everything in moderation."
I recommend it but don't overuse it if you try it. My memory has improved but now I only take it once in awhile when I start losing things too much.

Sometimes it is a matter of just increasing your circulation through stretching and exercise.

Other herbs that help increase blood circulation and the supply of nutrients to the brain are herbs like ginger, ginseng, and Hawthorn (which remove atherosclerotic plaques, provides antioxidant protection and is good for your heart as well.)

Squeek:

I noticed in your post you mentioned drinking soda. Would it happen to be diet soda? The same thing happened to me when I drank them because of the Nutra Sweet. After researching aspartame, I read that it drastically affects memory. I mean it got scary with me and my loss of memory. So, I haven't had a diet soda for around 10 years and my memory came back and I didn't do anything else for it so it had to be the Nutra Sweet.

I have a program called memory optimizer.  It teaches basic theory of how the mind works and how to effectivly remember things.  I am kind of busy packing up my houshold to move, but if you are interested, I am more than willing to elaborate on different ideas the program has, and the how to.  You may also be able to find it at your local library.  The program is produced by Learning Strategies Corporation.  Good Luck.

Eh... my memory sucks...  It sucks alot.  I even got an example from 5 minutes ago to share with you all about my memory.

So I remember I have a soda I kept in my desk drawer, and I was thirsty, so I went downstairs with a glass to fill it with ice.  As I'm going down, I notice the glass has a little bit of leftovers from the last drink I had, so I wash it out...then I walk away.  I got halfway up the stairs before I realized I never even got my ice.  [8)]

My mom is afraid to let me drive alone, because I will forget where I parked my car.  Of course, she wouldn't just say that... we've had firsthand experience.

I could go on for hours on how my memory fails to function at all, or you could just help me figure out what's wrong! [8D]  I have examples from school, home, these forums, all over...

Edit - I forgot to add something [xx(]  I wanted to add that these memory losses or whatever don't apply to my music.  I've gotten all the lyrics on all 1,000+ of my songs on this computer memorized.

I also forgot to add that this is the reason I don't study for school...what's the point if I'll forget in an hour [|)]
