I was wondering.. If our soul or consciousness could exist withouth the physical body and the brain, then why is it that when something happens to our brain either through illness or accident that it affects our consciousness.. It affects our memory, perception.. Some even become crazy and lose their mind.. If our mind and consciousness can exist withouth our brain and body then why is it affected when our brain get damaged? I have a friend who had a car accident and now he is out of his mind..

Our brains are only transmitters of consciousness. The consciousness itself does not get damaged, if the transmitting device malfunctions. It may seem that way from an external perception, but what we see in cases like your friend is simply his consciousness not getting properly transferred and expressed into the physical reality. Unfortunately, when a spirit is exploring a given reality through a physical vehicle, its experience and perception will strictly be connected to the functioning of the vehicle. That does not mean that the spirit itself gets damaged in a higher level, simply the quality of the "signal" so to speak cant get through. Imagine a TV set and a signal that it is transmitted through that TV. If the quality of the picture is bad, or it disappears from time to time, is it the source of the signal to blame? Most of the time it will be the antenna, that catches and transmits the signal. Same concept with the brain and consciousness. Your friend is perceiving this reality through a damaged transmitter(brain) and that is unfortunate, but the way he behaves is a result of broken communication between his consciousness and his physical body, bot because his consciousness itself is damaged.

Excellent explanation by Lightbeam. Let me mention once again Robert Schwartz's work on "handicapped" people in his book "Courageous Souls". It explains that and why the oversoul / Higher Self might even want to "courageously" explore and experience such a life.

He deals more with physical handicaps here, but mental issues (from birth on or by accident, old age or disease later) such as autism, Down syndrome, trauma, dementia/Alzheimer, chronic alcohol delir, Parkinsons, etc. - where the cognitive abilities to function in THIS reality and society break down -  might have been life challenges that were "planned / intended" or at least previously accepted (as a possibilty / path to go for) and reckoned with, too. Hard to imagine from our human perspective, but the Higher Self has a very different one it seems.

QuoteRobert Schwartz, author of the books Your Soul's Plan: Discovering the Real Meaning of the Life You Planned Before You Were Born and Your Soul's Gift: The Healing Power of the Life You Planned Before You Were Born, discusses why we ourselves plan our greatest challenges before birth. Schwartz researched the pre-birth plans of dozens of individuals to determine what they had planned and why. His book contains ten true stories of people who planned physical illnesses, having handicapped children, deafness, blindness, drug addiction, alcoholism, losing a loved one, and severe accidents. His books contains the actual conversations souls had with one another when they planned their lives together. Suffering that once seemed purposeless becomes imbued with deep meaning; negative feelings are healed and replaced by acceptance, forgiveness, gratitude, and peace.
