I am no expert on this but I believe the pentegram is used for protection and ...ummm.... I suppose binding is the word. To bind the spirits and protect the user from them. If that makes sense! Smiley

On another note...your sig line....I have always said "I am a god...not the god but a god!" Ripped straight out of Groundhog Day but it is a line that has stayed with me! Smiley

Yeah pentegrams get a lot of flak....
When it is the right way up the pentegram is a sacred god-symbol (like the cross, the tetregrammaton, etc), and is used a fair bit in banishing rituals where you are effectively channeling the power of inherant in the symbol (and associations)

Yeah I know what you mean - keep it up! I love the net...<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

Greetings Daniel!

Thanks for your kind remarks on the other thread regarding these forums

quote:

I have always been under the impression that the pentegram had to do with "devil worship" and other dark practices, but my research indicates something entirely different.

I am afraid the Pentagram is one of those things that many religious organisations have sought, totally erroneously, to portray as a thing of evil - associated with an alledged "devil". This, like altering their position on re-incarnation around 350ad, (and possibly creating the concept of "hell" and the "devil" or "satan" at around the same time I believe to support that position,) appears to be another myth spread by religions in the interests of controlling congregations - possibly because of its associations with witchcraft, where it is commonly known as the "Pentacle".

Well the fact is, nothing could be further from the truth. I could write reams on this subject, but suffice it to say that symbolically the Pentagram represents the four elements - Fire, Water, Air and Earth, and the top point represents "The Divine", "The One", "Unity" and all other names for the Great Creator and Master of the Universe.

The principles symbolically represented by the Pentagram are utterly sacred and fundamental to everything in the universe.

The Pentagram is also an extremely powerful instrument *against* evil, and is used to protect against and fight many dark entities of all levels. A Pentagram covered in electric blue flames is an extremely powerful defence against attack - especially in the Astral.

There is one ritual, which is an extremely powerful defensive ritual to protect oneself and others, called "The Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram", commonly referrd to as "LBRP" and can be performed either in the physical plane while vibrating the sacred names, or in the Astral.

With best regards,

Adrian.

Thanks for the info!

I am studying up on it and I find that everything you have all noted is quite true.  I have one other question, does the star of David have anything to do with the pentegram?

No, the Pentagram is highly symbolic, and powerful, in its own right, and not related to the Star of David.  As I mentioned before, the Pentagram is particularly powerful in such defensive and protection rituals as the Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram (LBRP), where the four Archangels Raphael, Mikael, Gabriel and Uriel are also evoked and present.

The LBRP, whether performed physically or Astrally is a very powerful defense against psychic and negative attack.

The Star of David is a Hexagram I believe, and which also has its place in Magic, but does not have the same symbolism as the Pentagram.

With best regards,

Adrian.

If you look at the pentagram you can see the symbolism of the four elements and the divine on top. This is also the reason why the pentagram upside down is a "evil" symbol- because this means that you put the selfish primitive diseres above the divine. The material before the divine- and that constitutes the black path.

You can also se that the five points of the pentagram represents the human body:head up- arms sideways- two feet down. This is an important symbolism, because it shows that humans are made of the four elements ,but ruled buy the divine.

The christian church has used the pentagram too it seams. There is an old grave chaple in my town (no longer used as this..) that has beautifl coloured windows with pentagrams in them. I got surpeised when I saw this because modern christians seem to conect the pentagram with evil ; but non the less there they where- the pentagrams in the grave chaple.
I will try to find out more about this.

You will find a lot on many many symbols in golden dawn and related texts.

I am aware that the pentagram has appeared in many places in history, but does any body know where it originated?

As already mentioned the pentagram shows the balance of the elements and spirit. Also it reflects man, who is combined of all 5 of these things. Perhaps the symbol is such a potent defence because an elemental spirit only consists of one of these things. The point of spirit when pointed downward reflects chaos ect ect. Someone once told me that a pentagram with a break in it is just as negitive because it symbolises a break in balance. The hexagram is also related to man in that it symbolises mankind in its evolved form, depending in what you believe. But yes the hexagram has many other associations.

The LBRP ritual which was mentioned is a useful protection but also clensing ritual. You fell noticibly better after its compleation. What took me a little while to grasp though was the vibration of words. As I learned the ritual from a GD text I learned the ritual words in Hebrew, but I know the meanings. But if you do a web search you will find plenty of different variations including english ones!!! While just going through the visualisations seems to have effect Im pretty sure that the whole vibrating the words part is very important as far as protection on an astral level goes.

Perhaps the regular readers and posters of the psychic self defence forum will have a lot more to add.

Regards to all

David

No one mentioned that the geometry of the pentagram contains the divine proportion. Therefore, when using it in a right, it is important to draw it as perfectly as possible, to maintain those proportions, and to be conscious of them. I know, nobody else says that, well almost nobody... One might consider the pentagram as a sort of programable key that can "unlock" the forces of nature, then again, one might not... Smiley

Ok I consulted the book shelf and found a nicely worded quote...

'The pentagram signifies the domination of the mind over the elements, and the demons of air, the spirits of fire, the phantoms of water and the ghosts of earth are enchained by this sign'
Levi, transcendental Magic,63

And to answer my own question the pentagram was popular with the Babylonians, Egyptians, Assyrians and the Hebrews but no one knows where it very firs appeared.

Regards to all David

Daniel,

The Pentagram is indeed an ancient and potent symbol in ceremonial magic, especially evocation, as others have written. According to tradition (ie. supposedly "historical" accounts), it was revealed by the archangel Michael to Solomon millenia ago, when Solomon prayed for a method of binding entities. He then proceeded to summon and bind a large catalog of entities, and documented their respective personalities and abilities. This is legend, as the manuscripts that form the Lemegeton in its current form dates no earlier than 1531 with Agrippa. Despite this, many experienced occultists over the centuries have confirmed it's stunning power to command entities, both "light" and "dark".

For one of the best modern editions of the source book, get "The Lesser Key of Solomon" by J.H.Peterson (Weiser Books). It contains not only the Goetia (demonic entities), but Ars Theurgia Goetia (angelic entities), and other manuscripts. A note: please be careful if you decide to actually recite the evocations with any firm intention and you have some psychic ability at present. You may be surprised if unprepared. There are a good number of accounts on the net of people's evocations, and not all of them are good. I could also give a couple. Seek out a trained and well experienced magician to help you, if that's a path you want to explore.

The surprising thing about the Pentagram and Hexagram is that, although we place much Qabbalistic symbolism over them, the geometric shapes themselves do exert real authority over entities! It's hard to understand *how* an entity of far greater intelligence and power than us would submit to a mere shape, something that would never affect us!

You'll find modern references to the Pentagram in HOGD, etc but my personal advice is to follow the more advanced, but safer and more powerful methods of Bardon. Not to put too fine a point on it, but evoking entities is not to be toyed with - even angelic entities will do you harm if not approached correctly.

Anyway, all the best mate.

Joe

Joe-
Thank you very much for the info.  Although I don't have a mind to evoke or bind any entities at the present I do enjoy reading about it...well, I enjoy reading about pretty much everything (smile).

I really appreciate everyone who has responded to my inquiry which I am sure has illuminated the minds of countless other members.  I really do love this forum.  Are there other forums out there like this or comparable (maybe regarding other topics??)  I have yet to find them.

Something else to add . . .

I'm aware, in addition to everything already stated here, that the Freemasons also use the pentagram in their ceremonies.  Not surprising!

Also . . . about that inverted pentacle.  I always believed what everybody said about it representing "evil."  It's true that people who call themselves "Satanists" use inverted pentagrams because what they do is basically a "perversion" of what other religions do.

HOWEVER.  I recently found out that Wiccans in England use the inverted pentagram all the time, and think nothing of the fact that everyone else thinks its upside down and evil.  Are there any Wiccans on this forum who live in England or have visited the U.K., and can corroborate this?

yeah, see the pentagram was used by "mages" for centuries, but then the "church" came along and made magick out to be evil and so pentagrams became evil

Could some enlighten me?  I want to know the basics about it and when/how it got it's negative connotations.

I know I am full of questions, but bear with me as I am in a big download phase if you know what I mean...

no symbols will ever protect you... it is the composition of your own self that will ultimately protect you from "evil". A dirty mind will attract evil and a good person will be protected by his own goodness... just like xtians who think that they can do whatever they want and always be protected by their god Smiley what you give is what you get, your world is a reflection of yourself

The pentagram symbolizes the "own world" for the magician, being inside are the 4 elements as well as the 4 bodies (mental, emotional, physical, etheric or astral) being them the source of power to make the invocations or evocations along the magical acts.

Can anyone say what is upside down or right-side up for a 2D circle with a symmetric pattern inside it? The term "not applicable" applies...

The pentagram has been very special to me since I was *given* a symbol in a waking vision.

Tisha, I met a group of wiccans last year and they were all wearing their pentagrams the right way round (point uppermost).  Something very strange happened when we shook hands too, and I wasn't even wearing one...

Personally, I have found that the pentagram does have protective and other properties.  This is something that I found out accidentally, so it doesn't have anything to do with "the mind".

Thanks for that Jeffrey, you've just clarified something for me that I "experienced", although I never knew this until now  Smiley

Thanks Adrian, this would explain why I woke up one morning repeating 4, and 5...   4, and 5....   4, and 5...   over and over - As someone that "watches my thoughts", this was one that came from a great distance as if from someone else, which was why I didn't notice it for a good half hour or so, unusual for me... It explains a lot.  I have had one other experience like this (waking up repeating a series of numbers) which I can't explain as yet.

Symmetric patterns inside the pentagram have their roots in talismanic magic. So every pattern or symbol have a specific subconscious meaning for the magician.

As far as I know this is to trigger the emotional and mental energies from the mage to become a vortex for the energies he is summoning.

A Brief Synopsis Of The Pentagram

The pentagram has long been associated with mystery and magic.

It is the simplest form of star shape that can be drawn with a single line - hence it is often called the Endless Knot. Other names are the Goblin's Cross, the Pentalpha, the Witch's Foot, the Devil's Star.

It has long been believed to be a potent protection against evil & demons, hence a symbol of safety, and was sometimes worn as an amulet for happy homecoming.

The potency and associations of the pentagram have evolved throughout history. Today it is an ubiquitous symbol of neo-pagans with much depth of magickal and symbolic meaning.

The pentagram symbol today is ascribed many meanings and deep significance though much if it is fairly recent. It has been used throughout history in many different contexts:-

The earliest known use of the pentagram dates back to around 3500BC at Ur of the Chaldees in Ancient Mesopotamia where it was symbolic of imperial power.

To the Gnostics, the pentagram was the 'Blazing Star'.

For the Druids, it was a symbol of Godhead.

In Egypt, it was a symbol of the 'underground womb'.

The Pagan Celts ascribed the pentagram to the underground goddess Morrigan.

During the long period of the Inquisition, the pentagram was seen to symbolise a Goat's Head. In the purge on witches, the horned god Pan became equated with the Devil (a Christian concept) and the pentagram, for the first time in history became a symbol of 'evil' and was called the Witch's Foot.

Ooh just wanted to add to this thread again (3 years later!! funny looking back <makes sneaky edit>), that the pentgram contains phi or the golden mean - that is, in proportion to the legnths of (one of the two of) the lines in each arm to the length of the (5) lines in the center of the pentegram. If that makes any sense. Its pretty simple but very cool Smiley

The pentagram (when the star is pointed upright) is used for protection from negative entities in the astral (it scares/wards them off).  When the point is downward (and the two points on the top are facing left and right), it is used to attract negative entities in the astral.  So people need to be careful about the direction of the points on the star if there are any around.
