Did This Site Get Hacked, or Did You Sell The Mailing List?

This is the only new agey site that I had registered on via a new email account, and this morning I get an email for a free Phasing book from russia!  Apparently you can download the thing for free, but I am wary just because it is from Russia.  It  may well be legit, but how the heck did they get this email?

THis is the main website for them, but all their email is .ru

Hey Blue,

I've only been on this site for 1-2 years, but I have gotten that link before and I know the site and book, of which I have read quite a bit of. That site is legit, as other members of AP have also recommended that eBook to newbie projectors such as myself.  :-P You should check out that book (I downloaded the book from that site, and haven't gotten a thing from it  :-) ). It helped me learn a good few things or so about projecting. Maybe it'll help you too.  :-)

I will be away on vacation to Italy and Sicily from June 4 to the 22nd. I will try and get on when I can, but that time will be very short, if at all. I'll reply to any and all of my threads when I get back home though. :-)

There are two versions of that site, an English version and a Russian version. If the e-mail is from aing.ru, I wouldn't worry about it.

EDIT: Oops, I misread the first post.

Blue

Ah!  Thanks very much for the prompt reply LadyS aka Nina!
You too 35!

Still though, I don't like this site giving out my info!

soli

the site isn't giving out your info when your email is publicly displayed for all to see, hide your email in your profile options

Blue

"Hide your email"

THanks.  I had no idea that some site would be trashy enough to default a person's email to the public.

I had heard that this site was run by an operator that stole it from Robert Bruce.  Now I see that it really is about something other than what it claims to be.

Blue

And it is very difficult to find, if it exists at all, the place to delete my email.

Thanks a god damn lot you assholes.  Jesus!

I will delete the account and god damn the bastard responsible.

God damned skank trash.

hmm i need to check if my email is open to the public now, that is sorta dumb if new accounts start out showing it to the public..

I keep mine open to the public incase someone isn't comfortable using the PM system to contact me.

It's really that simple.

Well, my email was open to the public all this time, this guys got a point (despite the profane and unneccessary language), a website that requires a valid email address, should hide it automatically and give you the option to show it, I really did think all this time that it was hidden and it wasn't......
Xanth, that is besides the point, why would someone feel uncomfrotable using the PM feature but not emailing someone on their personal email address? The email should be hidden by default, I have recieved odd messages too from other new age sites, now I know that they were probably collecting addresses for mailing off of this website.
All that aside, the very fact that people are spamming emails from this website is enough that AP forums should hide the email by default for new registers.

The responsible one was himself. That was fun. I had to quote this just so I could read it twice in the same thread.

To play devil's advocate for a second...
Do you not read over all the initial settings before accepting everything?
I sure do...  I knew full well that my email address was shown.

Who's exactly to blame then?  The admin for not defaulting it to no-show?  Or the user for being too lazy to read things over?

Some of the lower vibrations Tiny was talking about.

You know that Google tracks what kind of websites you go to and lists advertisements for similar sites.  it's not hard to pick up some kind of spyware on a random website and get emails.

but yea, hide the email.
be awesome.

Xanth

I show my email address on all forums I'm a part of...
I don't get spam email at that address.

Meh...

EDIT: I just checked out the registration page... and Sorry Capt, but you're outta luck.
The "hide your email button" is *CLEARLY* unchecked and right next to the email field.

It's 100% YOUR FAULT if you did not check that box to hide it.
You're given the option AND it's perfectly clear that the check box is UNCHECKED.

Stookie

You have to be careful with your info on the internet. It's your responsibility. I use junk email addresses for registering or use this:

Oh neat, that's a cool site Stookie.
I'll have to check that one out when I get a bit more free time today.

Thanks!

And you *CLEARLY* didn't read my post very carefully, I Just changed it to hidden a day or two ago. The point Im making is that a newb signing up here may or may not check every little feature of the forum, it should be hidden by default. Anyways, I checked the hide email box a couple days ago so it shouldn't be unchecked now.... EDIT: I just checked and my email is open to the public again... I just changed it to hidden 2 days ago, what the hell is going on?
EDIT2: When I went to my profile however, the box for hiding email is checked.... I saved it with it checked and unchecked and my email is still showing... Im not lying, this may be a bug and I thought I should bring it to the forum's attention, either way I would like an explanation as to why this feature has suddenly stopped working for me...

Nono, you misunderstood.

I'm referring to the page where you register an account here.  Not the inner workings of the profile pages.
On the "Registration" page, where you enter in your Name/Password/Email address... there's a box clearly to the right of the email field that says "Hide email address from public?"  It's unchecked, but it's clearly there.  If a new person missed it, that's their own fault for being in a rush and/or lazy.

And I am *POSITIVE* I clicked that when I signed up, just as Im positive I changed the email to hidden 2 days ago and 5 minutes ago again, and yet my email is still exposed to the public, FORUM BUG.

If you, indeed, tried twice to make it private... then yes, that would be a forum bug.
I'm sure Stookie will pass the information along to Adrian.  :)

I was just saying that the check box is clearly there.

~Ryan

*EDIT*  I've just successfully hidden my email address... so you must be doing something wrong.  It should appear in italics when you view your own profile.
I'll check back to mine later to see if it's *STILL* hidden though.  It could be a time sensitive thing.  We shall see!  :)
