Poll
Question:
Should the Karma System be removed from the board?
Option 1: Yes
Option 2: No
Yep, it's that darn Karma system that has me bothered....again. I've had nothing but positive feedback for a few days now, yet once again my karma is going down. Yeah, I know, ignore it Nay, ignore it. Well, I can't and I won't since it seems Adrian is dead set on keeping it here. It is a poor example of a persons abilities, knowledge, personality..etc. and that is what newbies will look at... the more karma points the better the person is assumed.
I find it unfair and unjust to be using such a system when some people do nothing but smite because of personal reasons. And not to mention there are a few people on here that "hang" out outside together off the forum and I can just imagine the clique mentality. I think taking the karma system off and making people actually speak out their differences is a much more healthy and less judgmental way of handling things. If someone wants to smite me, do it with your words, THAT I can handle and that way others that are reading can judge for themselves.
So, I made this poll. I hope everyone participates in it so it will be as fair as possible.
*crosses fingers* Please get rid of the karma system.
EDIT: Well, hell.. it won't let me fix the poll.
2nd EDIT:  it's working now. woot.
just so you know, i have NEVER smote you. not once.
in fact, i have applauded you quite a bit over time.
mostly because i randomly applaud, which is what we all decided to do some time ago when we brought this up before.
and, you're more than welcome to come to the IRC chat anytime, we'd love to have you. we've been getting a lot of new folks in there and it's always nice to have experienced persons there to help people in need.
I didn't name any names, feeling guilty? Look, no offense PR but in the words of Judge Milan, I wouldn't believe you if your tongue came notarized, sorry.
Quotemostly because i randomly applaud, which is what we all decided to do some time ago when we brought this up before.
Another good reason why this stupid system should be taken off and shot.
I'd like to keep this up front so it won't fall back into the pages. Can this be made a sticky for the mean time, please? Thanks. :-)
Done :)
Thanks, but I just realized that it won't matter if it's a sticky because most people click on "view the most recent post on the forum" :-P Ah well, guess I'll have to bump it everyday. I hope more than five ppl vote though.
I vote for http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=817

I like that.
It's a forum-karma version of "if you have nothing nice to say, don't say anything at all". :)
I like that a little bit better, but why have a system at all? I mean, we come here to share our experiences and views not to be judged on how good or bad those experiences or views are...right? :?
We are in a dead heat though. Damn.
I say we keep this going for about 2 weeks. That will let people who only occasionally stop by a 2 week time frame to vote in. Then we'll submit the results to Adrian (if it's voted to get rid of) and go from there.
Eh?
QuoteWe are in a dead heat though. Damn.
I tipped it back our way
i understand that you may not trust me, but i wouldn't smite someone based on personal disagreements, of which we have many. but just because our personalities and philosophies don't mix well doesn't mean that i think that makes your opinion less valuable than mine, therefore i don't smite you Nay. but it's cool.
and you're right, we were trying to show the fallibility of the karma system by arbitrarily applauding.

Great idea and thanks for the tip. :-)
For the record I voted No because there were no option to vote blank.
I debated whether or not to put up a 'don't care button', but I thought my argument would either convince people or not, so I left it out. :-)

Bumpidy, bump.
Over 200 views... only 10 votes...
C'mon guys, we'll need a bit more participation for this one.
This is kind of something important. :)
Yeah, I wish more ppl would join in. Do you think that shows that a lot of people just read the forums?
I suppose in a couple weeks if only a handful vote than the majority of those should be heard, the rest felt it didn't matter one way or another so they should be OK with that.
agreed.

Based on e-mails I've received from people in the past, I believe we do have quite a lot of dedicated lurkers. Much more than actual posters. (I try to keep that in mind when posting).
Thanks Stookie. :-)
Another Bumpity, bump.

Why bump a sticky thread? :P
So it shows up under "most recent posts"
BUMP!
Yeah, I guess I didn't need to have it sticky, but just bump it everyday. Is next Wednesday a good time to call it valid?
Whenever you wish. :)

/smites nay for dissing the karma system :-P
Just kidding.
I dont really care but I voted to get rid of it. It's rare I even look at my karma tbh. Years ago there was a period where I was a bit of a rep whore on some other forums - I was always thinking of what I could post to get positive rep. I suppose in that respect it could be good for a community as its encouraging people to post stuff others will appreciate. I ended up getting a stupidly high rep score and being given admin on the server but it wasnt healthy. My motives were all wrong and I should have been spending my time more constructvely.
If you care too much and stoke your ego with your score then its not healthy. If people smiting you is causing you stress then it's not healthy. If you dont really care then you wont miss it. So I vote to get rid.

It's sad that at my age I still haven't rid myself of a few issues stemming from childhood and being judged is a one. I hope we can get rid of it.

No time like the present to start!
Self-improvement doesn't stop just because we become ancient. :)
>_> *hides* ^_^
I don't mind being ancient. :-D And believe me, I'm pretty self aware.
I was making the point that some times we can't help how we feel or think certain ways, even when we know it isn't logical or helpful.
How about using the space to show users locations?
I like being able to see where people are from.
good call blis.
so far our poll doesn't seem to be drastic enough to justify getting rid of the system. :-(
Vote to Get Rid of Karma!
The majority should be heard regardless of how many felt it necessary to vote.
So, what happened to the post where the guy said he said No on accident? And then you, Xanth, said we could just take a no away put it towards yes? Why are those posts missing?
Down with the Karma system!!!

Down with the Karma system!!!
A few days ago when we had the "white screen" crash again... Adrian had to roll back to the most recent daily backup, so we had lost roughly 10 hours of posts. That was one of them.
So do I get to vote again? It doesn't seem to let me. :|

I edited the poll that you can change your vote.
See if it'll allow you to change it now?
Yes. Done it. Thanks. :)
Geez, now people can change their vote after they already made the decision?? Nice, the fairness factor just rose by a hundred..
Democracy in action! ;)

I hope the wink means your comment is tongue in cheek.. because democracy doesn't include being able to change your mind later.
since when?!
that totally ruins my political philosophy.
bump
I change my political choices every four years, sometimes more often.
I meant in the sense that I can't go vote for Mr. X. and then turn around the next day and say, Um...I changed my mind and change my ballet. Of course you can change your mind between elections. I'm not that ignorant. Geez guys.
But this does remind me of the whole buying votes issue in the real world.
I was just kidding. I know what you meant.
Bump.
You and your dry wit. :-)
Mr. X?
YAY! Am I gonna be president?! :D
That was a good one. :-D

its going well so far but far from conclusive
:NoY:
What makes you say that?
i expected everybody to want to get rid of it
but the dont :x
:NoY:
Eleven people want to and that beats seven. :-) The fact that not everyone on this board voted does not matter. They have had a chance and decided they didn't care one way or another and are allowing the majority to be their voice. That's why there is a saying about politics, you can't complain if you didn't vote.
Has Adrian been made aware of the poll? Does he agree to take the karma system off if that is what the majority ruled they wanted? I'm thinking he will, but not sure because he really seemed to like it, when him and I talked about it last.

I'll link this over in the moderator section for him to review.
In any case, I think his vote is worth at least 5 votes... so that would put the "no"'s over the top. ^_~ LoL
i think his vote beats all votes.
this isn't a democracy, this is a dictatorship and Adrian is Hitler.
Adrian is a fair man and this is his forum and if he thinks this poll is bunk, then so be it.
A good admin listens to his users before making decisions about the forum :) And hopefully agree with the members.
Well, I for one am corrupt...
So...
... I'm open to bribes... >_> :D

Another bump! Now when Adrian shows up, don't forget to mention this. :-)
Another bump.
I see that the new poster AlanRK (I think that is his nic) is already at negative one on his karma. That is the perfect example of why this stupid system should go down in flames. It's obvious that someone has taken his personal opinions and used the smite button for merely not having the same opinion. It's not like he was rude or anything.
Come on folks, let's keep voting the karma system down until Adrian shows up again.

Sure enough, I have no doubt that I'll get the blame somehow. ROFL
Is it really JUST that obvious though? There could be any number of reasons for it.
I mean, just because "YOU" personally were not offended by something someone said... does not mean that other people weren't.
Also, I see no reason that you can't smite a person for not agreeing with them. None at all.
On the other side of the coin, you can also applaud people with whom you agree on something.
I really do think you worry waaaaaaaaaaaaay too much about what other people think of you.
For that, you deserve a smite! MWA HA HA! :) ... just kidding.
Once again you have failed to see my point. This guy has how many posts and he is already in the negative?? How in the world can someone be judged that quickly?
QuoteI really do think you worry waaaaaaaaaaaaay too much about what other people think of you.
I'm thinking you might need to start worry a little bit more. I mean really Xanth, do you honestly think because you now have deemed me too sensitive that I need to change my personality and feelings? How do you fit through a doorway?
You judge yourself, Nay... not I. :)
Isn't that what you just did??
That aside, let's take your statement... "you judge yourself" Yet another good reason for the Karma system to be pulled off.
You exhaust me Xanth......

he'd have to actually check the PM for that to work.

Good morning literal Lucy. :-)
Doesn't he receive an email telling him he has a PM? I never had any trouble getting a hold of Adrian, I have no idea why it's so hard these days.
