Apparently, instead of remembering which posts you read or not; the forum just display as new all the posts with a date after your current login date.  Even if you don't read some, next time you login, they will be as not new.  I do have to agree that it can be annoying, especially when some posts are marked as old even if I never saw/read them...

Anybody who knows this any better than me correct me if I'm wrong.

This forum is what you'd call a "Smart Forum".  It remembers the last time you logged in and displays the topics that you missed (were posted on) while you were gone.  Whenever you leave the site or disconnect from the internet you reset the counter to that time.

Active Topics (in the menu bar) has the list of all the topics with new posts in them.  Much easier than searching through every single forum [:)]

If you leave and come back within like 30 minutes and there's only about 5 active topics, goto the section and change it from the last time you logged in to, say, the last 2 or 6 hours.

The last forum I used was remembering which posts you read or not, ignoring the dates...  So, even after 10 logoff/logins, the posts you never read would be still marked unread...  I think that's a better mechanism.  But, we can't do much about it anyway...

I agree Nagual, that is a better system from the users point of view.  However, just tracking the last login date takes a lot less computer resources (disk space) then tracking who read each message.  Instead of having one small piece of information for each user, you have one small piece of information for each user for each message (number of users times number of messages).

(O.T. I usually have a sig that says, "There is no spoon - Neo".  I'm still trying to work out a new one. [:P]

Hum...
Let's say there are 10.000 posts... that should take 10.000/8=1250 bytes...  Lets double it for igneficient coding.
Let's say there are 5.000 members... that should take around 12Mb, which is not much for a database...

I would have changed my sig, but the pulldown menus are not working anymore... so I can't access my profile.  [|)]

I don't know why you can't see the drop down menu because mine is working fine.  Try reopening your browser.  If that doesn't work here is a link to the profile page.

Thanks for the link.  I don't use Internet Explorer; and the pulldown menus code seems not to be 100% web standards compliant...  Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't...  That's the price to pay for freedom from Microsoft Evil toys! [;)]

I am wondering if there is any logic behind the way the new posts icons are displayed. Some posts will remain "new" all day while others only remain "new" a few minutes, atleast for me. Viewing them has no bearing on this. Is it my computer, or does the forum just have a random setting for this?
