Sound like you reached sleep paralysis stage and had some degree of separation but not full separation.
Were you able to see the room with your astral eyes?
I'm reaching a similar stage as you by the sounds of it. The trick from my understanding but limited experience is to be able to identify which is your astral and which is your physical body. If you can discern which is which i think you should be able to move your astral body if you can identify more strongly with it. It will feel much lighter than your physical body (i have felt this).
Next time I reach this stage I simply plan to imagine my astral already out & walking around the room. Then strongly associate myself with my astral body who is already "out". Hopefully this will bypass the need for an exit technique. The reason i want to try this is because with my astral/dream body is so close to my physical body it is hard for me not to feel back into my physical body. I think that's why the exit technique is difficult for me.
Anyone with more experience have some more ideas?

My suggestion is that you continue to try this same technique for 2 weeks to a month and see what happens. You can certainly expect this to happen over night but don't be disappointed if it doesn't because these things take time and practice, sometimes years of practice.
I started on my AP journey 4 months ago and I have had a dozen or so consciously induced OBEs however the funny part is that I can have an OBE one night with a specific technique and then the very next night try the same thing and have no OBE.
I think that maybe you did have an OBE but you just don't remember it because the physical side of your conscious was stronger than the astral side of you consciousness and the memories of you experience simply didn't get written to your physical brain. I have a sneaking suspicion that this is what's happening to me as well.
Please continue to post you progress here, I am interested in your results.
Best Regards
