I came up with this technique by combining a common lucid dream induction technique that involves sleep cycle interruption with a tactile stimulation technique. It seems to be effective about 80% of the time and, for me at least, works MUCH better than the classic induction techniques, especially if you have trouble visualizing in the visualization techniques.
------------------------------

You know that sensation that you get when you are scared or cold, a two second rush of tingles that spreads out across your back, the back of the neck and head, and across your arms and down your legs? It gives you goosebumps, especially if the environment is slightly cold. It occurs naturally if you are cold, and also if you are frightened or even if you think about being scared, that's why people who are frightened say they feel "the hairs of the back of their neck stand up". It works best if you are in a cool environment. Most people don't even notice it but it's very important to RECOGNIZE and be able to self-induce this tingling sensation at will for this technique to work.

Try to make this sensation occur the next time you are in a cool environment, try to give yourself goosebumps, think about how cold you are and you will be able to self-induce these tingles. Practice. Once you get good at self inducing them (it's extremely easy once you recognize them), remember to induce them when you are trying to project, but they will only lead to a projection if you are relaxed enough so that your body enters the mind awake, body asleep state.

Here's the actual projection technique:

Wake up 2-3 hours earlier than you usually do so that you are a little tired. Stay up for about 2 hours doing something relaxing (read about OBE's to condition your mind). Then go back to sleep. Because of the sleep cycle interruption, you will most likely achieve the mind awake/body asleep state as you enter the hypnagogic state (half awake, half asleep) only you will be a lot more conscious than as is typical in the hynagogic state.  You may also find that you lose consciousness first and then will just wake up in the proper mind awake/body asleep state.

At either of these points induce the tingles. Do it over and over which will induce AND strengthen the vibrations to a high degree. Next, try various projection techniques which will work a lot better due to the increased intensity of the vibrations. If the vibes are strong enough, you may just project without any effort! This is what usually happens to me.

Please try this and let me know if it works for you. I have a lot of confidence in this technique, I believe it would be very beneficial if this post became a sticky at some point if there was a lot of positive feedback of the efficacy of this technique.

When I first started having OBE's about two years ago, I could see my surroundings clearly and had full control during my OBE's. I could float through walls and ceilings in my house. I lost interest for a while, but continuded to randomly have OBE's about once every two or three months.

But now when I have them randomly I can't see anything and have NO CONTROL over my movement! I have control during the vibrations- I can intesify them and project easily, but once I'm out it's like I'm being guided around my room like a balloon on a string! I always end up floating up or down at high speed at first, then around my room slowly, then back in to my physical body. All the while it's BLACK, just blackness. It has been scaring me because of my lack of control vision.

Any ideas?

I had a VERY interesting OBE this morning. I was having trouble sleeping so I took 2 mg sublingual melatonin. Within about a half hour my body was asleep but my mind was still awake. I felt the vibrations come on and I intensified them using my own technique. I separated, floated around the room, and re-entered my body. I then separated again, sinking out from under my body and into my waterbed, I could "feel" the water![:O]

I then floated around the room but I couldn't see anything. Blackness. I then said out loud "clarity now" which is a technique I heard somewhere for gaining better astral sight. I could then kind of make out my astral body. It was translucent, like a ghost, no bright trippy colors, no aura or glowing blue outline.[V] I still could barely make out anything, there was so much blackness. This was the first time I've seen my astral body.

So what does your astral body look like?

Does anyone have experience with these? Share you experiences. I've floated about a dozen times, nothing special has happened- I usually either fall asleep or am too distracted by thoughts to enter a trance or hallucinate. I was in for 1 1/2 hours each time. I just couldn't get into the theta reverie/hypnagogic state.

I've always thought it made sense to use celibacy to help induce mystical states/OBE's/LD's, psychic ability, improve meditation, basically raise your consciousness. Figuring that orgasm is a release of "sexual energy", why not keep the sexual energy inside you, let it build so it might somehow be transmuted or tranformed into a different kind of energy that could be used beneficially. I always knew this philosophy had something to do with Tantric Yoga, but never really researched it. Then I came across this article. Please tell me what you think.

Has anyone tried celibacy to raise their consciousness?

Once in a while I feel a slight pressure inbetween my eyebrows. It's like an inward pulling sensation, very subtle, but noticable. I usually feel it if I've been having a lot of OBE's or when I'm tired, but also feel it at random times. I have the feeling this has to do with my third eye, but what does it mean? How can I utilize this sensation?

Welcome to Metaphysics! / Was this my aura?
June 30, 2003, 17:50:40
After about 15 minutes of concentrative meditation today I attempted to view my aura around my hand. My room was kind of dark with a little sunlight coming in. I viewed against a white background. I saw no color but did see a faint blurry, shimmering outline that kind of streamed off my fingers. Was this my aura or something else? If it was, why was there no color?

I just noticed for the first time something that may have important implications for WILD lucid dreams, OBE's, or remote viewing, and probably other related phenominon. I'm sure others have noticed this but I wanted to find out if anyone can relate.

While I was laying down trying to get to sleep, I had mt eyes closed and was just awating sleep. I noticed the typical faint swirling, puffs of color and smokey morphing images that have no definite shape. (I always see this, nothing special, lets call them metamorphic images or MI's to make it simple.) But then as I approached sleep, just BEFORE the hypnogogic state, I somehow, adjusted my focus so that my eyes felt crossed and suddenly the MI's came into focus and formed into stable, 3-D images of objects! The blackness was suddely not 2-D like usual, but had depth!

I then snapped out of it for a while, went back into it, and had a long OBE, followed by a series of vivid lucid dreams. What was going on here? Can anyone relate to this?

Does drinking moderate to large amounts of alcohol negatively affect PSI/psychic/OBE/meditation/lucid dreaming abilities? I know it must not be beneficial, lol. On a side note I have noticed increased OBE's the morning/afternoon after drinking large amounts of alcohol, although they were "fuzzy" OBE's. Can anyone relate to this? I only drink on the weekends but feel I don't have enough recovery time to be able to have the ability to meditate deeply or practice OBE's and similar metaphysical phenominon. [V]

Welcome to Dreams! / I got stuck in a dream!
June 09, 2003, 10:14:54
This was one of the most terrifying experience I've ever had. I was dreaming I was at my house and every room was dark. Suddenly all the pets that I've had that have died were there in the room with me. They seemed angry like I neglected them when they were alive. I realized it was a dream and tried to change the scenery and brighten the mood of the dream but nothing happened, so I tried to wake myself up but could not.

Everything was so real. I lost perspective of reality completly and thought I was somehow living a different life like an alternate reality or something. I panicked and started to cry. I closed my eyes and concentrated on my waking reality, trying over and over to wake myself up but nothing happened. I had full perspective of time passing. THIS WENT ON FOR 15-20 MINUTES! I was literally stuck in a dream! Finally I started to wake up and forced my eyes open and was fully awake, but emotionaly shook up. Has anything like this ever happened to any of you?

Hello! I'm a 22 year old guy who didn't realize how many people there are that share the same interests as I do about this metaphysical stuff. Very encouraging! I have been experiencing the pre-OBE vibrational state for as long as I can remember but never knew what it was until I was 17. Now I've learned to self-induce them using a broken sleep cycle method and tactile stimulation to induce and strengthen the vibrations.

I'm also an occasional lucid dreamer. My favorite thing to do in an LD is fly.

Wow, this looks like a very well-put-together forum. Very extensive and organized too. I hope to meet all of you, make some friends and learn a lot.[8D]

Most people experience vibrations humming through their body right before they project. Perhaps you're not 'deep enough'. Or maybe you just need to initiate the vibrations, if that's the case, try my method:

http://www.astralpulse.com/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=7238

In either case, you must be in the mind awake/body asleep state in order to have an OBE. Are you able to move your body at all? Could you describe the state you reach in more detail? You were kind of vauge.[;)]

#13
No, but try it anyway.[:D] What were you talking about? Ham? I'm afraid you lost me with your first reply.[?]
#14
Cool, just remember you must be in the mind awake/body asleep state for it to work. Play around with it while in different states and see what happens though.
#15
Ham shanks.....mmmm.

Does everyone know what tingling sensation I'm talking about here?
#16
Allanon you also said "pray don't meditate". People in Biblical times including Jesus himself meditated. The word "meditate" is mentioned frequently in the Bible.[;)]

Wow, this is a huge thread, I have not read it all but would just like to throw in my two cents.

Background:

I am Christian and practice OBE's. I don't know if they are dangerous or not, but I have a passion for exploring the unknown, so I will continue to study and induce OBE's along with Bible study and prayer.

It saddens me to see so much arrogance on both sides of the issue. The unbelievers talk like they are 100% postive that OBE's are not a deception from satan. You don't know for sure, don't act like you do. We (projectors, including me) could be playing with fire here and not even know it!

And Allanon, you act like you know 100% without a doubt that OBE's are dangerous for non-christians to practice. They could have nothing to do with satan or evil at all! They could be visions from God.

You said:

"All this projection and letting go of your mind just allows the Devil to get a stranglehold on your soul"

Where is the Biblical support for this?

Notice I said "small pinch". As in very small quantity.[;)]

quote:
Psychedelics deter the mind's ability to sleep so it would just be a waste.

Very small doses of mushrooms before sleep will act as a sedative and dream enhancer, however in larger doses it will impaire sleep. I don't remember where I got this info but I know it to be true from experience.

Pot causes temporary memory loss and therefore negatively affects dream recall. I don't recommend it. I have heard that a small pinch of powdered shrooms in some tea can induce lucid dreams/OBE's/visions. Of course I will not promote it.[;)]

What loveposion is describing sounds EXACTLY like what I feel at the very start of the vibrations.

See here for info on these tingling sensations and how they can induce OBE's:

You are VERY close, loveposion, keep at it, this sensation will induce the vibrations nessecary to project.

Thanks for the article. I'm a member at lucidity.com and I'll tell you right now they are scientists who believe it is "naive" to think that consciousness can be separated from the body. They believe OBE's are a type of lucid dream. But they fail to prove that the consciousness can not be separated from the body.[;)]
#23
Thank you Soulfire, I will try that during my next OBE. Anyone else have suggestions?
#24
I can't believe nobody else has experimented with sensory deprivation for altering consciousness!

Melatonin is secreted by the pineal all the time. It's what makes you drowsy, it doesn't open the third eye. There is a endogenous chemical called DMT that's theorized to also be released by the pineal gland, that might open the third eye.[?] In large quantity DMT induces very short, very intense "visions". Rick Strassman goes into detail about it in his book DMT "The Spirit Molecule".
