Hello group!  Here's my (hopefully quick) 2 cents worth on the Higher Self...

This is also a term I use all the time.  It is something I emphatically believe in, and have experienced.  In a nutshell:  (IMO):

The Higher Self is actually "you", but it is the "you" from a more advanced perspective (time-wise).  Imagine if you will, that you could go back in time (in this present lifeline), and have a talk with yourself when you were 10 years old.  Since I am now 47, I have lived this child's life up until now... and I *know* the mistakes, successes, and experiences this child is on the road to having.  I have "Ultimate Wisdom" where this child is concerned, because this child is "me"!  But what do I say to this child?  Please think about this, @ some depth, now.

We need to make mistakes.  That is how we learn.  We need to be hurt, both physically and emotionally.  Our experiences, both good and bad, are what shape our very personalities.  They make us strong, and compassionate.  Of course there *are* areas of blatant misdirection, which we would "try" to guide our young "selves" into correcting,...yes?  But would we listen?  And furthermore, those very "mistakes" have shaped us, as well.  If they did not, we wouldn't "now" recognize them as mistakes at all !  Now think about this.... as "Higher Selves" to our 10 year old counterpart, we must be VERY careful about influencing them to any great degree!  Why?  Because by our very own influences upon this 10 year old.... we would be altering our OWN "present" condition!  Past, present, and future... are changed simultaneously!  The "selves" work together on the road to experience.  So while allowing our 10 year old self to grow, learn, experience, and make mistakes.... what is it that we can *really* do for this child of us?  We can attempt to "connect" with him/her.  Attempt to comfort.  Attempt to show peace, understanding, compassion, and LOVE!  Attempt to make him/her *feel* that we are ONE!  

Now isn't this the same thing we experience,... when we "connect" to the beyond?  To our Higher Selves? When we pray?  When we meditate?  When we gain intuition, and insight?  For it really is, "insight"!  It is insight, and connection, from ourselves... but it is a Higher Self, which already knows the road we are about to travel.... and can only give us love, and understanding.

Now it *does* get just a "tad" more complicated... when you consider that any Higher Self you may be in contact with..... ALSO has a Higher Self above them!  And on, and on,... ad infinatum!  

Consider also, that physical time itself is NOT linear!  "Linear time" is only percieved by us that way, to keep us from experiencing everything all at once in this universe,.... which is the way that it actually happens!  The past, present, and future... are all happening NOW!  Each moment of consciousness contains within it, EVERY possible moment of consciousness that ever was, or will be!  Therefore, your Higher Self (at *any* level) is always there for you, and quite conscious and aware of your present conditions, ambitions, wants, needs, and desires.  He/She also knows.... what is best for you!  And it really doesn't matter what your current beliefs are.  Your H.S. knows, and has experienced, your own outcome.  On the upper levels, your H.S. is aware of ALL of your past, present, and future lives and incarnations, as well.  

And if we delve high enough.... we learn that we are all actually (1) entity, with lives and experiences broken down into singularities and divisions of "selves" which have the ability to experience and enjoy life from a unique and solitary perspective (to keep the experience from happening all at once!)... called,.... the human soul.  The human life.  The human experience!  But LIFE itself... is all one!  And at the highest levels of Higher Self, we reach the "Creator"... which is *merely* the culmination of All emotion and experience which ever was, is, and shall be.... happening all at once (in the twinkling of an eye).... eternally, for time has no beginning, nor end.  It is all happening,....  just,.....  now.  

But when you multiply the consciousness of the Higher Realms of H.S., the enormous amounts of experiences and emotions become,...well,... just a bit more than the singular Human experience can imagine.  Hence,... while the love and emotion become infinite, alas... the trade-off is the inability to directly communicate with any *singular* soul, in a manner in which that soul could comprehend.  All that can be given.....is the assurance of compassion, and LOVE!  (Which is all we need, of this Highest of Higher Selves!)  Or indeed,... all we could understand!  So where then, does this leave us as singular human beings, experiencing *this* life?  

Since the "Creator" has no means in which to directly communicate with us as individuals, (aside from the experience of His creation itself, and of emotions).... it becomes "our" problem, indeed!  "Seek, and ye shall find"... is the cornerstone upon which we should all begin building our personal towers to experiencing our "one-ness" with our shared Creator.  We are all on different paths, according to our *own* personal future roads to our Higher Selves.  We are all at different stages, and have different needs.  Different purposes.  So "individually", we should seek out that *highest* of our Higher Selves, of which we have the ability to communicate with and understand!  We have to communicate "up", as it were.... because that is the only way in which our "future", or Higher Selves,... can connect with us.  It is a one-way street..... but *only* if we choose to turn into that lane.  And then,... only as high, and as much, as we are individually capable of understanding and/or connecting.

Every possibility (down to the tinniest re-arrangement of atoms) that was/ is/ or will be plausible, is happening NOW!  Every one.  With every *thought*, or *deed*, you are actually changing and shaping your past, present, and future.  Not metaphorically....but *Actually*!  All of your lives (plural) experiences are altered within every breath and emotion and deed/thought of your present condition!  Second, by second!  You can (and do) alter that 10 year old's experience, with your own personal choices.  But since we are only capable of experiencing the conscious NOW.... we are never aware of the changes we have made in our own lives.  (There *are* exceptions, which I've experienced.)  Because, by altering the 10 year old's experience with our current thoughts/deeds... our memory naturally follows, and we *think* this is the way it has always been.  Guess what?  It never is!  As per the Higher Self, and the way in which we connect, alter, and experience that self....

As above,... so below.

(Sorry group... for rambling on like this!  Sheesh!  I just *knew* I couldn't keep it short!)  Hahahahaha!

Hi All...

Hobbies?  Hmmm, lemme see...

I used to do alot of hunting, archery, trapping, and fishing.... but the past several years it's mostly been fishing/camping, but darned too little of that when I'm this busy at work!  

Mainly, I'd have to say it's my music.  I have a band, and am a published songwriter, so I spend alot of time playing, writing, recording in my home studio, doing demos, etc.

Then of course, there's always the beer-drinking that must be done!  (Hey,...somebody's gotta do it, eh?  I'd hate to put all those people out of work!)  

And, goofing around on this keyboard has to be right up there, as well !

Also, reading... writing,... watching movies (junkie!),... and research & metal detecting in the early spring!

There is a way of recognizing something as "true" in the scientific world without having the same results appear in a test with all the variables constant. Hello Pete!

Nothing to be worried about, at all!  In fact, consider yourself very lucky because you have a headstart!  You already seem to have a "glitch" (which is good!) in your system... that is, the ability to remain conscious while the body is in "sleep mode".  Natural ability along this line, will make it just that much easier for you to succeed in having a full-blown OBE!  (Most of us have to work really hard at achieving that.)  Good luck!

Good insight there, Patty!

I didn't make the 30-day test, either!  I think it took me about 4 months.  But I *had* slacked way up on it, the last few weeks, and only tried a couple times a week, then.  

You make a very good point... about subconscious beliefs, fears, and upbringing holding you back!  You may "want" to do it,... but are you "afraid" of it?  (Most people are,...if they'd just realize this.)  It's natural to be afraid of it,... for it is the unknown we're venturing into.  That's why it's helpful to communicate with people who've done it, over and over.  (When I did it, I didn't even own a computer or know anyone who had done it.)  But I *had*  chewed the covers off from Monroe's 1st book!    

I tried Monroe's technics over and over, without success.  While I could reach a very deep state of relaxation, I could never seem to get anything like the "vibrations" going.... and then of course, I'd fall asleep!  Then I got into a very extensive personal search for spiritual truth.  Everywhere!  And after asking "The Suprerme Creator" (whomever that may be) to "show me Truth", that's when it happened!  And so, I would agree with you that it *may* be helpful to first achieve this by putting your "faith" in whatever you truly feel is your personal, spiritual protector... and simply ask for it.  If nothing else... this is a good way to help deal with that initial "fear factor" that holds us back.

Hello Hephaestus!

Ever since my first major OOBE (as I mentioned in another posting), the doorway just opened up for me, all on its' own.  I began having premonitions, time & dimensional skips, remote viewings, visions, etc.  They just happen, when I let them.  I don't control them, nor do I claim to do so.  They always seem to have some direct connection to my own future or aquaintances, and they are almost always correct, and verifiable, about 90 % of the time.  (I believe that the other 10 %, simply hasn't yet occurred!)

But this is a door which you should be very careful about opening!  See,... it's very hard to close,... and it's not always pleasant!  For a long time, I'd go to sleep every night with enough alchohol in me to insure that my sleep was very sound, indeed!

Hello Patty!  Hmmm,... deep questions, those!  I'll try to answer briefly, *without* having written chapter 14!  Hahaha!

(1) Motivations:  My initial motivations were almost purely a search for "truth".  I was taken with my "guide" in a full-blown OBE, and was shown many things which were to be a part of my own future.  (Although I didn't know this, at the time.)  After that, I began having visions of future events...all of which proved true with 100% accuracy in my life.  So there's no way that I can question the validity of the experience.  It seems that I had opened the communication door within myself, in some manner.  Because ever since that night, I began having premonitions, metaphysical experiences, and remote viewings.  I can only "allow" them to happen... it's not like I can do it at will, at all.  It just happens,... but I *do* get a kind of "feeling" when it can happen....usually.  Then I either allow it, or not.  Oftentimes, not... because I've had some rather fearful experiences "on the other side".  
Sorry,... excuse me for rambling!  My motivations now, are simply to experience the vast realm of existence which lies within.  To communicate with my Higher Self and experience reality the way it really is, without being veiled in the cloudy sheet of materialism.  

(2) Truths & Big Answers?  Mwahahaha!  And you expect *that* in a posting on a newsgroup!??   Seriously Patty,... I guess I answered that one, above?  The biggest Truth I guess, was being shown that existence is not as it seems... and having it proven to me.  That this world we live in, is only a shadow and a reflection of reality.  That our perceptions are only limited by our own insistence upon the reassurance of materialism.  That our own future experiences are molded by ourselves, with each and every thought and action...second by second.  That there is no such thing, as coincidence.  There is only opportunity,... take it or leave it.
On the lighter side of the question:  In my experience, (for the mostpart), it's not the BIG questions which get answered.  It's the little, almost irrelevent ones.  But you see, they really *are* the big ones!  For if they bring you to the assurance that there *is* something more....well, then that's the big Answer.... isn't it, now?    IMO Patty, you will never meet the "Supreme Creator" (for now), whereupon He sits and chats with you as if talking to an old friend.  That is simply not possible, given our extremely limited concept of understanding.  The Creator has already given us communication, in the only way we can understand the language.  He said,... "Hey!",... and we behold the Universe!  (And we can't even get that!)  Let me make a comparison... what you ask would be akin to a very small red ant sitting upon your shoe, as you are typing into this newsgroup.  (Or perhaps even, a single-celled paramecium!)  So that they might understand,... how can you possibly communicate with them, and explain exactly what you are doing, and why?  And I have a feeling that the distance between the Supreme Creator and ourselves....is probably 1000-fold more!  But He has simplified it for us...because the Creator is *also* as close to us as... looking into the mirror.  Or at the stars.  Or the birth of a newborn.  
As per your own desire for answers,... you will find them by seeking out your own Higher Self.  This is the totality of your own being.  The "you" which retains *all* of your life experiences, past, present, and future lives as well.  The "you" that knows what your goals and reasons are for being a part of this current life-experience.  Many mistake this being for God.  Or Angels.  Or Guides.  He/She is actually *all* of the above!  It doesn't matter (and he/she doesn't care) *what* you call them!  It is your Higher Self!  "Guide" is a good term by which to personalize and classify it.  Makes it easier to digest!  
I have always "sensed" my own Guide beside me in my travels.  He held my hand and walked beside me once,... and I didn't even question it!  And it was as real as any reality in the material realm!  But I was so taken up in the beauty of the surroundings which he had brought me,.. that it never occurred to me to turn my head and look at him!  Aaarrgghh!  (sheesh!)  But I kept this in mind in the future.  I admonished myself that when next I sensed his presence, I would at least try to get aquainted... and ask his name.  (Thinking that I could use this information in the future.  You know,...for contacting him by name.)  Well, it worked.... sort of.    
I later became aware of his presence during a vision, and remembered what I wanted to ask.  I sensed him off to my left, possibly 50 yards away.  I turned and looked, and there he sat upon a stone wall watching me deal with my scenario.  But I guess I chose the wrong words for my question to him.  I simply asked,... "who are you?"  (Which, in retrospect... is not at all the same as, "what is your name?")  And so, my Guide answered me... " I am The Watcher, The Looker ".  And then it was over.  But during the swift progression from the vision and back to "normal" sleep, I was once again bombarded with a "rote" of understanding completely, just what that meant.  (It's like a sudden, and total insight...and as complete as it can be.)  "The Watcher, The Looker", has a dual function in my life.  Active, and passive.  While the Watcher has the ability to "watch out" for me, and can alter my experiences, the Looker is merely a passive observer of my progress here.  From the Looker I can gain understanding of my mistakes, and of my life's affect on others...and learn from it.  From the Watcher, I can gain the insight and ability to do something about it.  To change my present, and future realities.

Aaaaarrgghhh!!!  (I just *knew* this would turn into chapter 14!!!)

Hello astralmaster!  Previous to my own OBE, and metaphysical experiences... I had never had a spontaneoous OBE.  I suppose it took me about 4 months of really trying.  But there's such a thing as trying toooooo hard here!  I actually achieved my goal, after I *stopped* trying so hard... and merely gave myself the mental suggestion of becomming conscious as soon as REM set in.  (There are ways to do this.)  At the time, I was very into my own "search for spiritual truth"... and was quite heavily into Eckancar (having since completely turned away from it.)  However, there is a bit of truth to everything, and every religious viewpoint.  You might say that in my case, Eckancar was my springing board to achieving OBE.  But my goal was not to fly around,... not to play,... not to visit an earthly place while OBE.  My admonition was only.... "show me Truth".  And that I got that night....in full spades...in a full-blown OBE the likes of which I haven't experienced, since!  And then it seemed I had opened the door.  A door which is not easily closed.  From that night forward I began to have premonitions, OBE's, remote viewings, visions,...etc., etc.

So, good luck to you!  Yes,... you *can* turn this ability on via willpower... if you don't try toooo hard!    IMO,... this is a natural ability inherent in every human being.  It is a matter of simply *remembering* that which is most natural to us.  A matter of *letting go* of the constraints and implications which this physical world imbeds in us.  To achieve it,... you must not "hope" for it, or wish that it might be so.  Rather,... you must *know* it without doubt... and simply let it happen.  After all,... we are all most likely living comfortably in the OBE state, prior to Mama's final push..... no?  

Just remember,... relive,... and enjoy!

Well of course, Countess... the correct answer is, "all of the above"!  IMO, the question is generally at fault, here.  The question begs the assumption that we are *in* a body, in the first place.  IMO,... while the body/mind is our current focal point, it is not however, our point of origin.  While it is the nourishment of our present consciousness, that does not preclude our ability to focus that consciousness upon other realms of time or existence.  So, do we leave the body?  Yes, and no.  Both.  Are we *in* the body?  Yes, and no.  Both.
